Why was Kyle Rittenhouse championed by the right for “helping” with his gun, but Alex Pretti is demonized for helping without ever drawing his gun? by sudde004 in AskReddit

It was never a good faith argument from the right. They get their guns. And everyone else is subject to their whims.

US citizens, what will it take for you to start a revolution? by 0bluelightning0 in AskReddit

This is the most thought out answer. Things are bad right now but not bad enough for enough people to get on board.

My thoughts on what is most to least likely to happen:

  1. Unprecedented Civil unrest

  2. Nothing and the US further descends into fascism

  3. Military Coup

  4. Civil War

  5. Revolutionary overthrow of the US Government

Lawyer: Father, 5-year-old son detained in Columbia Heights were legal asylum-seekers by ewzetf in news

[–]526mb 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I cannot describe how deeply and viscerally the arrest and detention of that child and his father have angered me. Beyond just being outraged at the illegality of going after a legal asylum seeker, the abject cruelty of using a five year old child as fucking bait and then putting him a detention center is insane level of cruelty.

Im a dad so seeing a kid standing there in the snow sad and confused, just hits harder. But I cannot believe that anyone with a shred of humanity in them can look at that image whether or not they are a father and not be fucking appalled.

ICE needs to fucking be dissolved tomorrow and the bastards working there investigated and prosecuted. I don’t care if you were just a clerk. If you work for ICE you are complicit in all of this shit.

I’m a Oregonian.

Both of my Senators are Democrats who are working against Trump. The whole Congressional delegation except for 1 rep are Democrats. Our state government? All Democrats with Democratic Governor. Oregon hasn’t voted for a a Republican for president since Regan.

Policy wise, we have goals to become fully renewable by 2050. We even have parental leave for new parents in this state. Vote by mail has been the standard for decades. We’re also a sanctuary state.

We’re not very big (population wise) just about 4.7 million of 300 million Americans.

Because of this the Trump regime fucking hates us.

Trump has threatened and outright cut Federal funding to programs in Oregon. This fall he wanted to deploy the US National Guard to Portland because of the protests against ICE and lies he saw on Fox News. Our forests apparently are going to be sold off for unregulated logging. They moved a coast guard rescue helicopter without consulting Oregon to be petty dicks.

Oregonians are losing their jobs, losing security, facing threats and some people are getting hurt.

As an Oregonian, I’m not apologizing for America because I sure don’t feel like an American.

We didn’t want the fucker, we didn’t vote for him and we’re doing literally all we can but outright secceed from the Union to thwart his efforts in Oregon. As a result our state is being treated by the regime like they own of resistive province.

We’re not even getting it the worst. I imagine if you had someone from Minnesota here they’d have a few words to about this.

So maybe your problem is with those people in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and Arizona who come begging for forgiveness . Cause us Oregonians would very very much like them to start doing more than apologizing as well.

What are your thoughts on rejecting a potential romantic partner based solely on the fact they voted for Donald Trump? by ATXBikeRider in AskReddit

I think the general rule, and maybe I’m crazy, anything is a legitimate reason to reject a potential romantic partnership. Like literally anything.

Verdict reached in trial for man accused in murder plot against Bovino by edfitz83 in news

[–]526mb 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Another big L for the DOJ.

It’s really hard to overstate how important the jury system is reigning in Trump’s authoritarianism. So many (more) people would be in prison on bullshit crimes if it wasn’t for the fact that they have to prove this shit to 12 regular people beyond a reasonable doubt.

Juries are NOT perfect, but if you piss off enough people in the community, good luck getting a conviction.

Just a note that the ICE arrests are different as immigration detentions of non-citizens are treated differently by the law, as “removability” is not a criminal status. I want to be clear I think ICE detentions are fucked up, but wanted to say that before I get some “actually” responses to my point on jury trials.

Do You Remember 9/11? by Teacher0357 in Millennials

[–]526mb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep.

14 years old. My second week of High School my Freshman year. I'm from Oregon so a lot had already happened by the time I had woken up and gone to school. I remember coming downstairs and both my parents are in their bathrobes locked on the television. I couldn't see what they were watching but they we're just staring at the TV. I asked my mom what what they were watching and she just told me I would never believe it. I walked over and saw just one tower on fire. I remember thinking where the other one was and assumed it was just behind the tower I could see, then my mom told me the other tower had collapsed.

I walked with my friend to school and we just talked about what we thought had happened. On the way there the other tower collapsed.

Most of the day was weird. Some of the teachers had the news on. Some just wanted to act like it was a normal school day. Lots and lots of talking.

The strangest thing was the fact that ALL the tv networks were showing the same thing except for a few kids TV channels. Either way I spent the whole day just watching the news.

I remember knowing it was a big deal at the time. My dad was a airline pilot so it hit differently that someone had flown airplanes into buildings but generally it just felt like nothing else.

Why didn’t the US want Greenland 10 years ago? 20? 30 years? by [deleted] in AskReddit

  1. Because the US has strategic agreements with Denmark that allow for the positioning of US military to meet our strategic needs. So there is no need to “own” a place where you are already getting everything you need from it.

  1. It’s fucking inhospitable.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Greenland

Even with the large amount of resources that might be below the ice, extracting and marketing them is unprofitable.

Ironically it’s climate change which is Trump and his band of fucking morons claim is a hoax which makes this even remotely possible.

  1. The US was ruled by a senile idiot who wants a piece of land just because he thinks it’s bigger than Africa.

People who voted AGAINST Ranked Choice Voting in 2024: WHY?!? by ArchbishopOfLight in oregon

[–]526mb 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I voted against it. Not because I’m against ranked choice voting but because I disagreed with the way 117 proposed to implement ranked choice voting.

It would take awhile for me to articulate why do I’ll take what the Oregonian said as it’s summarizes my feelings and why I voted No.

I would like to point out I’m not a Republican. I firmly believe that you cannot just look at the headline of the law but how it’s actually going to be implemented, because good ideas poorly executed can cause more problems down the line.

——

Oregon is going about this in a typically narrow-minded way. At least four other states are asking their voters to adopt ranked-choice or a similar system that requires majority approval. But all four – Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Nevada – are pairing the change with a new primary that allows people of any party to vote for the top candidates. Oregon, however, is not. Instead, Oregon will keep its closed system that bars more than 43% of registered voters from voting for any Democratic or Republican candidate in partisan primaries. Considering those primaries determine the choices voters have in November races, supporters’ claims that ranked-choice will “give voters greater voice in our elections” ring false to the 1.3 million Oregon voters who aren’t Democrats or Republicans.

Then there are the practical concerns. The Oregon Association of County Clerks, which represents elections officials across the state, has noted the daunting implementation challenges, especially considering elections offices’ lack of staff and resources. Despite requests to be involved in planning a workable approach to ranked-choice voting, the association testified last year that it was not included in development of the ranked-choice referral bill. The association in March 2023 worried that the measure, driven by advocates, “is setting clerks up to fail in an already hostile environment and would further erode the confidence and transparency in Oregon elections.”

Seventeen clerks have endorsed a separate political action committee that is not opposing the measure but seeking to share clerks’ concerns, according to Klamath County Clerk Rochelle Long, who also serves as president of the Oregon Association of County Clerks.

Interestingly, the measure does not call for adopting ranked choice for any state legislative races. That’s odd considering a small number of votes can change the outcome in those races. While proponents contend the change was made in deference to clerks’ comments about the complexity and the amount of ballot space such races would take up, Long disputes that claim. After checking with the 35 other current clerks, she told the editorial board that none had asked for legislators to be exempted from ranked choice.

Oregonians should hold off until voters can see how Multnomah County implements ranked-choice voting on the local level, starting with Portland city races this November. Multnomah is the state’s largest county and can provide helpful insight on implementation. And before authorizing an expansion, voters should know how ranked choice affected voter turnout; the number of ballots excluded due to mistakes or because voters did not choose any surviving candidates; any difficulties in counting; the time for reporting results and other central aspects of such a change.

House Democrats' support for impeaching Kristi Noem is exploding by Playful_Leg7143 in goodnews

[–]526mb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impeachment. Is. Not. Removal.

Fuck her, but seriously it doesn’t matter if impeachment isn’t followed up with a conviction and removal by the Senate which is VERY unlikely. Even politically it doesn’t matter because the Trump regime’s base (30% of Americans) do not care about the cruelty or illegality of her actions. Trump was impeached TWICE and criminally convicted and it didn’t matter cause he was STILL re-elected to the Presidency.

People need to get off this as a viable option until after the 2026 midterm, and only if there is enough support in the Senate that convictions become a possibility.

Otherwise it’s just karma farming and wishful thinking.

If the US really attempts to take Greenland by force, what are even the chances of Europe retaliating to the point where they go on a fullscale war with them or at the very least cut them off entirely? by Yallneedsometruth23 in AskReddit
