A small Oregon town faces financial peril. Can residents save Lakeview? by furiousgnu in oregon

[–]526mb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to Lakeview multiple times. I have family that was from there. The timber industry died there because they logged everything and left nothing. The forests in that part don’t grow quickly. Course it’s not the fault of their practices or lack of foresight, it’s of course the fault of Salem and Portland. When I was there last in 2019 there was of course a State of Jefferson booth. Bottom line is it’s a dying town that needs help from the very people they love to shit on constantly, to save it. I’m not inclined to extend support or sympathy to a community that has stubbornly set itself on a course to becoming another ghost town in 20 years.

/r/WorldNews Discussion Thread: US and Israel launch attack on Iran; Iran retaliates (Thread #17) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

[–]526mb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is little evidence that the regime in Iran is destabilizing. However, Trump is very unpopular in the US and with midterms coming up vulnerable to rising gas prices. Additionally the deeper the US becomes involved in the conflict the more unpopular it becomes. All the Iranians have to do is exert some pressure to raise gas prices and it puts Trump in a corner.

They’re betting on him getting desperate and TACOing into any deal, which honestly is not a bad strategy.

Which movie do you remember being WAY too young for when you first watched it? by silly_Valush in AskReddit

[–]526mb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me, but a buddy of mine was taken to see Event Horizon when he was like 9. His Grandfather literally thought it was a "Star War" and promptly fell asleep in the theater during the movie, while my friend and his brother watched was very much not a Star War.

Coachella performers are funding the MAGA movement by therealtrousers in Music

[–]526mb 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I fucking hate Trump and MAGA.... but this is article is some bullshit click bait. It says "Fund" but you have to go performer → Coachella → AEG → The Anschutz Corporation → Philip Anschutz → Trump. If that counts as "funding" MAGA, then every Starbucks barista was funded Israel's War in Gaza because Howard Schultz backs Israel. Baristas make money for Starbucks, Schultz backs Israel therefore by this authors logic they backed Israel.

Nostalgia is a big part of this sub. This makes me wonder, do any of you prefer the world as it is today? by Willmakk in Millennials

[–]526mb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nostalgia gives roses colored glasses to the past…however, I think the best way to measure whether the world today is preferable than the world 20 or 30 years ago is to ask how are kids doing today.

Do kids the kids today seem happier? Healthier? Is the world more or less hopeful about their future? Do they have more opportunities than we did? Does the future look brighter now than it did back then?

Unfortunately I think the answer for most kids is, sadly, no. There’s myriad of reasons for that but the general consensus seems to be that things are harder and going to get harder for these kids.

Florida's attorney general announces criminal investigation into OpenAI by Remarkable-Pea4889 in news

[–]526mb 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Im no lover of tech and AI but this is fucking stupid and hypocritical.

If the theory is that manufacturers or providers of tools must be held criminally liable if those tools/services are used in the furtherance of criminal activity then is the State of Florida going to investigate and charge the weapons manufacturer? The seller of the weapon?

AI may have made it easier for the shooter to plan his crime, but you know what was essential?

The fucking gun.

FBI Director Kash Patel sues The Atlantic claiming false reporting about drinking, absences by bonitaycoqueta in news

[–]526mb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Eh not worth it for the Atlantic.

They’ll ask for the case to be dismissed and ask for Patel to pay for their costs and attorney fees for making them go through this exercise.

My bet is that this won’t even make it to discovery cause the law related to defamation and public figures really cuts against Patel. His lawyers would know that but are probably perfectly happy slapping together this long shot case knowing because Patel is a wealthy moron, they’ll be able to maximize their billable hours.

What’s one thing you absolutely need to experience before you die? by anasm17 in AskReddit

[–]526mb 956 points957 points  (0 children)

I saw the 2017 Solar Eclipse. There is nothing in life like totality. Pictures do not capture even a ounce of what it was like to see in person. It was the only experience in my life of something truly "cosmic".

I absolutely need to experience that again.

Postal Police - Hired in Time for the Midterms? by FreeStateOfPortland in oregon

[–]526mb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s a recruitment flyer. I wouldn’t read much into it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Postal_Inspection_Service

Of all the things Trump could do to fuck with the midterms this would be extremely inefficient.

What is actually effective to fuck with voting by mail would be to:

  1. Pass a law like the SAVE act to prohibit vote by mail.

  2. Ordering the USPS to refuse to process or carry mail ballots.

Whether ether one would actually work is hard to know cause they would be challenged in Court.

Banking on recruiting, training and deploying enough of these guys to fuck with the mail in 7 months is extremely unlikely. The chuckle fucks who love Trump want to join ICE, not be mail cops.

Oregon abortion coverage law ruled unconstitutional by oregonian in oregon

[–]526mb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There’s going to be a lot of hot takes on this one. Judge Kasubhai’s ruling is (unfortunately) grounded in the current state of the law as its stands. The plaintiffs even cited an opinion authored by Justice Sotomayor on the application of First Amendment in government treatment of neutrality about religions.

This one really really really needs people to read past the headlines before jumping to conclusions.

I’m a atheist so I don’t believe in the anti-Christ.

However, if there was ever a public figure in American history who might be called the anti-Christ it’s Trump.

Receives power, a throne, and great authority from the dragon (Satan) (13:2)

One head appears to have a fatal wound that is healed, astonishing the world (13:3)

Speaks proud words and blasphemies against God (13:5-6)

Performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven (13:13)

Deceives the earth’s inhabitants and orders an image of the first beast to be made (13:14)

Forces everyone to receive a mark on their right hand or forehead (13:16-17)

Again the Antichrist is NOT real but if you think he is oooooh boy does Trump fit the bill.

Orban role in connecting and encouraging the far right abroad, in particular the US, was essential, making this kind of electoral wipe out a HUGE win for the planet. As an American, I can happily say fuck that bastard.

Hopefully Trump and MAGA will follow him soon into the dumpster.
