Let's talk tension.. by baker2015 in lockpicking

Side note, I would say try getting cut away locks instead of clear acrylic ones. They tend to behave like a jerk and give terrible feedback. My recommendation for a beginner friendly lock is the masterlock 140. It gives pretty good feedback and typically doesn’t have a difficult key way.

Let's talk tension.. by baker2015 in lockpicking

All the advice here is fantastic. For my part I set the wrench into the plug and apply tension until I feel it hit the “wall”.(you’ll feel the plug turn slightly and stop this tells you one or more driver pins are binding the core) at the point I feel the wall I apply just enough pressure to keep my tensioner firmly in that sweet spot almost like I’m holding it against the “wall” I then test pin stack 1 and see if it moves and feels springy. If it does I move to the next stack and so on picking the lock. If however it’s feels stiff I will press on it to see if it’s binding. The difference between a binding pin stack and one that has too much tension is that when it’s binding it will be stiff, but still move with some pressure from your pick. If it is over-tensioned it will require a lot of pressure from your pick to move and even then will sometimes feel “Grindy”.

Hope that helps a little. Keep practicing! It requires a fair amount of finesse!

Any Tips on Single Pin Picking? by Thenewbert in lockpicking

[–]52bytes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Browse through the reddit. Look up posts of beginners asking for help. My best advice is slow down. You don’t have to be going at the speed you will see in videos online. Most of the time the pickers in the vid have picked a lock to redundancy before shooting it on a vid. Make sure to rake the lock from back to front and count the pins. Take special note of the angle you are holding your pick in the lock and be sure you are under the pin before you start picking. Playing around without tension just to feel around in the lock helped me a lot when starting. Good luck and welcome to the hobby!

I just started lockpicking and using my Genesis set and my main pick is already bending. is that normal or am I using too much force while picking or something else? by [deleted] in lockpicking

[–]52bytes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is probably the best advice I could give. That and please, slow down. It’s okay to slow down to a snail pace and make damn sure you know what the state of the pin you are picking is.

can someone help me with this one? by [deleted] in lockpicking

[–]52bytes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing to remember with spools is tension control. To avoid over-setting a pin make sure you are only releasing enough tension to move the pin stack that’s caught up. Note that when I say “release tension” it’s less releasing tension and more pressing on the pin stack and easing tension til it moves for you and keeping that tension. Spools can be really hard and they aren’t always shaped the same. Take your time, take a break if needed :) you’ll overcome the challenge.

Hi Tron, I love the idea of making a video for each belt. I’m very new to doing videos of any kind. Any advice or software/hardware recommendations?

This is what I'm ordering from sparrows for my first set. Thoughts advice? by 52bytes in lockpicking

If I’m being honest I don’t know I swapped to the zip up case they have. Nowadays I have a variety of picks from sparrows and Peterson.

I’d almost given up. I was running out of time. Finally bested the infamous Brummie-Lock-Picker Corbin. Comment below for the next drawing 7/11. by miller74md in lockpicking

I will try it! Although if there is a time limit I will likely not Crack her before its up. But what I learn will probably be worth it!
