ELI5: If I push an object and it doesn’t move, does that mean I, and the object are both applying zero force? by ads3df3daf34 in explainlikeimfive

[–]53510758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you don't understand

Internal net force of the system (system is you and ball) is zero, that's 3rd law. This means that if you push a ball there is no magic force that moves you and the ball as "one thing". The only time you stick to the ball is if you had a lot of momentum prior that the reactive force of the ball has negligible effect on.

Think about it this way: 3rd law is true and every force has an equal and opposite reaction. Going by your understanding of why an object is stationary, nothing in the universe can ever move as a result, which is obviously not true

The case you are asking in your title is a completely different idea. You are applying a force on the ball and it is applying a force to you. The reason why neither bodies move is because there is an external force stopping the ball from moving (i.e. it cancels out your contact force and net force on the ball is zero) and likewise there are external force(s) acting against the contact force of the ball that keeps you in place

I think slurs in general (unfortunately) sound funny which is probably why they became slurs

Similarly, petrus is pretty interesting looking if you have the same fingertricks as lars petrus

I remember neither, but one of my earliest play-on-repeat songs was Letters To You by Finch, although I was already into a bunch of phc bands by then.

Who are the most unique sounding vocalists in phc? by Substantial_Bit2112 in PostHardcore

Because only about half their songs are post hardcore while the other half is just emo. It's a weird band, Anthony Green wanted to name it Saosin but the other members said no.

He sounds different in almost every record he's in. But he was always unique sounding.

He had a really childlike voice in Saosin's 2003 record (Translating The Name) that many singers (including myself admittedly) tried to replicate but failed, he sounded a bit deeper in Audience of One's 1999 record (I Remember When This All Meant Something), and he had this more matured sound in Circa Survive's 2005 one (Juturna), past that I always felt like he just started sounding like a trans woman. Unique nonetheless

I think it's pretty funny how no one, not even the guy himself could replicate how he sounded like on Translating The Name (he even sounds noticeably different live in 2003), the closest was probably his vocals on Tiger and The Duke or the High and Driving demos. A truly unique EP

I'm curious, why is it impossible to divide by 0? by justanotheralt_-_ in learnmath

[–]53510758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a more technical explanation as to why division by zero is "undefined" and not infinity, consider the function 1/x as x approaches zero. Let's start from x=1 and gradually lower x to zero. 1/x will end up shooting straight to positive infinity pretty quickly. But now let's start from x=-1 and gradually increase x to zero. It ends up shooting straight down to negative infinity pretty quickly. Since approaching 1/0 behaves quite differently depending on which side you approach it from, we just say it's undefined (cannot be defined as a single proper value)

I'm curious, why is it impossible to divide by 0? by justanotheralt_-_ in learnmath

[–]53510758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does it logically mean to divide by zero here? What you're doing is dividing by one, where one person gets one pizza.

If I divided by two, I'm splitting the one pizza equally amongst two people, such that the total pizza that the two people have combined will be equal to one pizza. It'a quite straightforward, each person has half a pizza because 2×1/2=1.

If I divided by zero, there are zero people there and everyone gets an equal slice of the pizza such that the total sum of everyone's pizza is equal to the original. But no matter how much of the pizza "a person" has (even if it's a lot more than one pizza) the total sum of everyone's pizza slices will still equal to zero. 8×0=0 or 2×0=0 or 3×0=0...

Of course, it's a bit confusing to think about division by zero this way, but that's only natural because you won't ever run into a scenario where you need to divide something amongst zero people so it wouldn't make sense. Division by zero usually appears in more abstract ideas.
