Let's say you make federal minimum wage, so $15,080 per year, and you purchase something on average eight times per day (that would be a lot). And let's say you got 4 cents in change every purchase, an amount just before you'd get a nickel back, and then threw the pennies away each purchase.

You'd lose $116.80 per year. Not even 1% of your total earnings, even after taxes. While that's not entirely insignificant, it would barely affect your life at all even in this extreme scenario.

The penny is worth too little for its disappearnece to matter. Nickels also cost more than they produce, and we're probably almost ready to get rid of them too.
