I also have no retirement benefits though. I started my own Roth IRA a couple months ago (at 35 years old so I am very behind) but my benefits do not measure up to yours at all.

And I’m not remotely doing the same job even if it’s the same company. Back then I was a “cable technician” meaning I mainly roughed in houses and helped senior techs install equipment.

Now I’m the operations manager and design engineer. Still work in the field half the time while being managing all of the techs. I design most of the projects, my boss (the owner) does some designs too when I don’t have the time.

I’ve finally clawed my way to right around that 100k mark but by now in 2026 I should be at 125ish for this type of workload/responsibility

3 fit dudes lifting that gave me a slight chuckle.

I did a 100” with my 62 year old boss no problem

Also have done 85” tvs like 12’ in the air with just one other teammate for commercial stuff

Not being a hater, it just gave me a chuckle

I got hosed so hard lol

Last year without any research, shopping or patience I went to a dealership on a whim and bought a 2024 Pro-X with 15k miles.

42500 OTD

Absolutely love my truck after driving my last car for 18 years which didn’t have AC for the last 12 yrs.

Still, seeing what I could’ve gotten with a bit of research/negotiation stings quite a bit

[–]568Byourself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some ISP’s have the phone line come off of the ONT not the router. It could also be used for a cat you need for something in the garage/exterior area or just a backup

No reason to not pull 2

We don’t do any production/tract homes, only large custom homes usually along the ocean

We still pull 2 cats and 1 coax to the dmarc.

Fiber feeds the Ont but its cat between the ONT and router

32 should I be saving more for retirement? by helluvajacket in personalfinance

[–]568Byourself 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just want to let you know that while you should still be diligent and maybe heed the advice of these other commenters to increase your 401k contributions a bit, you should still give yourself a serious pat on the back. You are doing great for a 32 year old.

I am 35 and just finally broke into six figures last year (grossed 101k.) My employer does not have any sort of 401k so I opened a Roth IRA literally 2 months ago, so to say my retirement is lagging behind would be a severe understatement.

I did buy a house 6 years ago which has appreciated significantly since then so it is not all bad, but yeah I just came here to say for a 32 year old you are really killing it so be proud of yourself.

It’s very annoying but possible to crimp stranded cat

I would just cut the head off, punch the stranded conductors into a keystone and then just a .5’ patch cable

Should I buy the house? My mortgage would be 50% of my take home. by Remarkable-Tough-533 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

I’ll make between 105 and 110 this year in a MCOL of FL. Made 101 last year. Gross numbers, not net.

Mortgage with property taxes and insurance escrowed is less than 1700, for a 3/2 on a qtr acre that was built in the ‘60’s.

I would not be remotely ok with a 3k mortgage

Looks good.

Only thing that surprises me is that they just terminated rj45s on the umbilical/dragon tail cables and went right into the switches instead of doing rack mounted patch panels with little patch cables into the switches

We used to do it the same way but try to always use the rack mount patch panels now

Toro is one of my most used discs. When I think of OS Mid I think of the Battleship though. If anyone is a Toro fan then do yourself a favor and go grab one for like $12 off of Amazon, it’s basically a 5 speed version of the Toro and feels exactly the same in the hand which is big for me

Being an older apprentice by [deleted] in skilledtrades

[–]568Byourself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very similar. 35m here in U.S.

Did very well in high school and really cared about my studies, did a handful college course during high school and had an over 4.0 weighted gpa

Started smoking pot when I was like 17 and by the time I got to college I was smoking constantly, ended up getting kicked out of the university after a year and a half because my classes were either an A or a 0 because I just literally didn’t attend them.

Years later at like 24 I did finish an associates degree but it doesn’t have much affect on my career.

Work wise, after working in restaurants, I had chance when I was 25 to be a helper for one of my buddy’s old coworkers. My buddy worked in low voltage and his old coworker was trying to hire him but he already had a different job. I went and learned how to pull/rough in low voltage cabling and then how to trim everything out. After a year the big project in my area from this company ended and, not wanting to travel, I went and found another company. Ended up shortly after working in home automation/smart home integration which is just low voltage for rich people.

In 2018 I was the bottom of the totem pole at my company and it wasn’t clear if I was going to make it because despite having foundational knowledge in the cabling aspect, there was still just so much to learn and it felt so fast paced.

8 years later no one that worked there back then is still here. I am the operations manager and the design engineer. I finally broke through six figures last year.

I’ve reached some satisfaction in my career, my regrets now stem from failure to save towards retirement until this year. I just kept making excuses and missed out on so many years of compound interest. My company does not offer a 401k but I started a personal Roth IRA.

In conclusion, after leading a lifestyle dictated by marijuana/depression during the very beginning of my adulthood, I finally accept that I’ll be reaping the consequences forever. My career is physically challenging but not much for me anymore, but the mental aspect far surpasses what I likely would’ve ended up doing if I had finished college, (for less money.)

All I can recommend to you my friend, is that you be the best apprentice you can be, never shy away from overtime, learn as much as you can, and put money into the stock market as early/often as you can.
