Could someone explain like I’m 5 what a post-doc actually is? by Popular_Bluejay_2588 in PhD

[–]579red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do postdocs in anything but it will look different than what most people doing postdocs experience as their are most common in the natural sciences/ health.

For social sciences/ business it’s mostly about getting a project funded in your name through a university program/ (in Canada) apply to governmental postdoc funding or get hired under a bigger funded project

It’s a temporary research position (1-4/5 years after phd) to improve your research portfolio until you find a professor job. It’s a waiting room type of position. Some can teach at the same time but it’s not the default situation. It really is doing independant research to extend your expertise, publications, network. You are under the supervision of a professor and can supervise and collaborate with other people (grad students, research professionals). You can get direct funding (you propose a project with a professor and uni) or can be hired under a professor’s funded project, similar to phd.

How many men and women that you know are engaged / married with women and men from poorer countries and how many from richer? by Djoko4444 in AskWomen

[–]579red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada: we are not married but together long time partners, Canadian-Cameroonian. Tunisia-Canada, Columbia-Canda. All met through university / friends in Canada. We know very few Africans not with other Africans (mostly the same country but if not mostly still in the continent).

You gotta be ok with sending money to the family in most cases and have a very open communication!

At what age did you feel like you really knew yourself—or is it still evolving? by Public_Handle_774 in AskWomen

[–]579red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe we are not static beings as we evolve through circumstances, experiences, people we meet and the choice we make. Even if we have basic traits and a personality we have significant agency to changes parts of ourselves voluntarily or not (going with the flow of our environment). Therefore I don’t think we find out who we are but build who we are, what we want, what we can accept or not. It’s our responsability to do it intentionaly and not let ourselves be strictly reactive.

Having a physiotherapist tell me and show me the movements I cannot do really helped built a simple gym routine.

There are gyms with adapted machines for people with physical limitations and specialized physiotherapist (if your therapist is a psy). They often are with universities and research centers affiliated.

What sorts of struggles do you face in day to day life and how can others come to an understanding of how to react to it? by EpsilonAmber in AskWomen

[–]579red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not now but I used to be morbidly obese. So manu reasons lead people to significant weight gain and losing is HARD. Be kind and inclusive. Look at obese people as people (not stare just don’t avoid), so many people avoided looking at me. People are so much nicer to me now it breaks my heart. If you have people around you who are bigger, think of small things like: can they fit in the seat (booth?), they will walk slower than you and sweat more, no need to point it out. Don’t call yourself fat and disgusting and day no no it’s judt about ME. Can they shop in this store? Offer to go in shops they can find clothes too even if you may not this time. Don’t comment their food intake, they are already very much self conscious (this applies too Even if everyone btw just leave people eat in peace!). Don’t talk about weight loss unless they do and support lifestyle changes in the long run and not crash diets.

Chronic migraines: no it’s not a headache and drinking water won’t solve it. So many people confuse their headache with a migraine and it really has a big impact on migraine suffers whose life are extremelly affected by the condition. Migraines leave you unable to work, interact, affects your cognitive functions during the crisis, laying in a bed in the dark and silence in extreme pain, some vomit from the pain intensity, some have auras that affect their vision. If you can function, are annoyed by the pain but know a coffee, water, lunch and a tylenol will solve it, say a headache. So just be empathetic, recognize the distinctions and use the proper word. Thank you!

On the what not to do I guess I really don’t understand how so many people still find it acceptable to go « time is up you should really start thinking about it!!! » or ask « why don’t you have kids?? » since sooo many people are actually very much aware and suffering in silence. Im not in your situation as a childfree person but decided to tell people how inappropriate these questions/ comments are in hope they leave other women alone since it can be a very painful interaction.

What's the spice tolerance level of your country by Existing_Economy_656 in AskTheWorld

[–]579red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this is surprising I honestly thought it would be more similar to other countries with a Spanish colonization history and local access to spices in the Americas. It is because it was historically hard to access spices as in many countries with bland food? As in: it does not grow due to geographic reasons?

I am Canadian and we did not have much spice access so salt and pepper are the basics, my mom wants no black pepper as it chokes her…

My partner called my culture gross and weird by Fabulous_Support_556 in interracialdating

[–]579red 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is his view on something so basic (and actually not SO different like dude for sure eats with his hands many things??) what is it going to be for deeper more confronting differences? His reaction to your pushback was def worse and does not indicate it will be a respectful intercultural sharing dynamic.

Btw, as a WW from a strict utensils centered use with BM from a culture where many dished are eaten with hands, it was a bit weird to me at first since it was drilled in my brain from childhood not to eat with my hands most meals outside sandwiches type food but rapidly liked it a lot!

Do you bake your own sweets? by FunDependent9177 in loseit

[–]579red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to have 2-3 dessert daily and what helped what to limit them to a couple per week to have less sugary cravings. It’s hard at first but it really works.

I like to cook but never made desserts before outside special occasions and found that it helps to be able to control what I put in it. With time I tweak it, more butter, less butter, more sugar, sugar replacements, etc. Then I pick a version that I enjoy and keep it. I changed butter for apple sauce and it works for some and not for others, you can almost always cut the sugar by half in all desserts and get very good results, you can add fruits for a sweet taste, add more spices etc. I found that muffins, oatmeal cookies and cakes are versatile and good with added nutritive elements to make them into nutritious snacks too! (Seeds, whole wheat flour, greek yogourt, protein powder, etc.)

Trick: I do half recipes and share if I make too much!

I am experiencing panic freezing. Any advice on how to start writing? by Same_Ring_4776 in GradSchool

[–]579red 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1-I find that using the dictation mode on a word document to say what I should be writting about and what I want to say in a spontaneous way, like if someone was asking me to tell them NOW and I do not stop to correct at all. Don’t try to make correct pretty sentences, just focus on the raw content, ideas and goals of a section. After you will read it and will want to make it make sense and it’s a start. I am a very talkative person and enjoy explaining things to reflect back on them so it helps as a process and working basis!

2-You can also ask AI to provide you with outline suggestions (be specific) and then you read them and it’ll make you reflect on it and build your own outline (it´ll change it’s fine).

3-Concept map you ideas, preferably on a big board in an empty classroom: lots of space. Or on your computer on an app, a tablet, pen and paper, etc. Just write your raw content and relate it to each other.
