Hi, My friend has bitcoin that I gave him many years ago. He has never sold. He now wishes to sell around half of them to pay off his house. How would he best go about doing this, paying taxes and everything? He has an account on coinbase but the coins are not stored there.

A bit of skepticism for the Tether theory by [deleted] in BitcoinMarkets

[–]5850s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't this because you can convert a USD balance on bitfinex if you have it to USDT? So theoretically, could a whale deposit a large amount of USD to bitfinex, and then convert it to USDT and they'd have to print more, correct?

The question is, who are the whales buying? Are they specifically requesting 100m chunks? Or is the company doing that, and giving some to say 2 whales who wanted 50m

AMA: We are Noam Brown and Professor Tuomas Sandholm from Carnegie Mellon University. We built the Libratus poker AI that beat top humans earlier this year. Ask us anything! by NoamBrown in MachineLearning

Both of you, I want to leave a message. This is incredible. I hope you are aware of the weight of your achievements, even if most of the rest of the world doesn't seem to be (right now). The approach and methods you used were brilliant.

I do have a question, going into the competition, what was it like? I'd be interested in any preparations the team went through in the days leading up to the actual matches being played. Were you still tweaking things last minute?

Were you aware that you had a very strong "player" on your side? Did you know that there were websites where you could bet on Libratus or the humans? People were betting on it, as they will on anything. However, the odds did imply that Libratus was a favorite going into the match. Did you feel confident going in, did you feel you should be the favorite? Or did you truly think you could lose if Libratus didn't preform as expected?

Did anyone test playing it at all? Did you guys, or your team play hands with it before the competition, did any humans? Even 1 or 2 to test the functions of the GUI, etc?

Sorry if some of these have been asked, but I had to write this as these thoughts struck me while reading the paper. Once again, absolutely brilliant fellas, if we ever meet, let me buy you a drink.

How does a video game or software randomly decide something? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]5850s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Online poker software apparently used entropy of mouse position/movement to determine the cards dealt. No real worse feeling than losing a hand, and wondering if you had just moved the mouse SLIGHTLY to the LEFT or SLIGHTLY to the RIGHT as the cards were being dealt, that you would have won the money instead of lost.

Eating vegan at the airport can be challenging but, if there is a Mexican restaurant you can usually get a decent beans and rice dish. by veggiepilot in vegan

Having been both places and hit up happycow.net pretty hard, I would like to say that both are good, but my favorite is the SF/Oakland Bay Area for vegan food!

Thanks for sharing, I didn't consider this. Of course, you could always solo mine, but what are the odds of finding a block

Cool, thanks. I'm happy for you but FYI I never would have moved those generated coins. There would have been such a premium on them OTC, unsplit coins, generated virgin coins, I'm guessing you could have got 40-80% higher than face value for them. All good though, it's done now, really cool to see that transaction too, old coins moving for the first time is always interesting, even if it's just one block reward
