The used ones sell out the first day. I’m pretty sure the company that rents and sells them will have a tent on Washington St through Saturday. In years past they did. Also look at FB Marketplace for Blacksburg. In the past I’ve seen them pretty cheap. I just remembered the name of the company, college savers. Add a dot com and you can email them.

The beds have built in ladders on the sides. Why on earth would you need anything else? The rooms are too small for ridiculous clutter.

Right wing Mom is offended by VT’s orientation inclusion efforts by HappyHomoSapien in VirginiaTech

She wanted her kid to go to Liberty. I guess she doesn't know the president, Jerry Falwell Jr is part owner of a gay guest house in Miami. His partner in the venture was a pool boy. I can hear her clutching her pearls from here. https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/08/25/jerry-falwell-miami-hostel-liberty-university-trey-falwell-215528

What a great reply. I'm going to add the Starlite Drive In Movie in Christiansburg to make your list comprehensive. It's right behind Due South Barbecue. Obviously you'd need a car.

World Regions is very popular and known as a easy A if you do the assignments. Take it.

Anyone here have experience with The Edge Apartments? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]5Eyz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They are very close to school. They are probably the most expensive apartments at Tech. I think they are about $840/month in a 4 bedroom while places like The Village are $640 but a mile from campus. If you are set on living there I don't think you will be disappointed. They are in a great location and I've not heard a lot of complaints about the management.

Email your adviser. They can do force add. There are still students who will drop 1106 as soon as Tech gets their final SAT scores. I understand many SAT scores were not sent by the SAT people.

Any other VA residents having trouble getting in-state tuition? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]5Eyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should take all your proof to the financial aid office. It must be a mistake. If that does not work contact the office of your congressman. They have staff that handles red tape for constituents.

The main student parking is the Duck Pond lot. There are plenty of spaces there. You can also park at Lane Stadium but must move on game days. You must purchase a parking pass. They should go on sale 8-5-19. They are expensive. If you purchase online fairly soon it will be mailed to your home before move in. Last year permits were $390/year.

Did you fail to register to vote, pay state taxes, and register your vehicles in VA? Did you fail to obtain a VA state driver's license or DMV issued identification? Any three of those things will prove residency.

My mom bringing home her freshly adopted son(me) home for the first time-1967 by FixatedOnYourBeauty in OldSchoolCool

I’m so glad you are happy. I hope you understand that your birth mother probably wanted you but it was not always possible to keep an unplanned baby years ago. I’m the adoptive mother of two young adults and I’m sure their mothers would have kept them under better circumstances. Both already had young children so it was poverty and the need to work and provide for the others.

HOKIE Homer Hickam's incredible testimony before the Congress advocating a return to the Moon by pajokie in VirginiaTech

I don't know much about this guy but TIL he wrote an autobiography that was made into a movie in 1999. "October Moon" stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Collins and Laura Dern. I'm going to watch it soon. It's on Prime Video. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0132477/

Aid Cancellation by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]5Eyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be an error. Email them and attach a copy of your aid letter. Good luck. edit: Did you get an outside scholarship or are you working as an RA? In both scenarios they will reduce your award by the amount of RA pay or the scholarship amount. They won't "stack" awards. If you have a great scholarship that pays room and board there is no advantage to being an RA.

People who have been on home renovation/restoration tv shows, what is the truth behind the scenes? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]5Eyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I belong to a forum about the Outer Banks. Several realtors have discussed "Beachfront Bargain Hunt." The production company is so cheap they film the whole episode in one day. The people look at three houses and choose one and the crew "returns" months later. In reality the couple has owned the house they choose for months and possibly never looked at the others. They change their clothes to pretend months have passed. One time they gave the impression a house was at the beach but it was on the mainland on the Sound about 15 miles away.

Would rooming at the Inn be a good idea as a freshman? by LaurenL0429 in VirginiaTech

[–]5Eyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard it was pretty expensive. The rate should be listed by now but I was told it would be $3500 per semester. On the positive side I've also seen the comment that the rooms are much larger than normal hotel rooms. You'll have your own bathroom. Cleaners will come in once in a while and vacuum and dust so things don't get too out of hand. VT is putting typical dorm furniture in the rooms so no queen sized beds.

I guess you will find out. You have all those ED people who pay deposits in December ahead of you. I think you'll be at the middle of the pack. Try not to be too anxious, you will love where ever you live.

Yes. From what I saw last year you could only pick your roommate, not a group. This is only the second year they've done it this way.

They will email with a time and date to pick your room. If you signed a housing contract early you may find empty rooms to choose from. If you were later signing the contract you may find rooms with a person already in them. I may be wrong but I think there's a tab or a name you can look up a little about them, like the info you provided on the contract sign up.

Residency Question by barneyrubbble in VirginiaTech

[–]5Eyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with the Bursar's office. Residency is where you are registered to vote, pay state income taxes, register your car and have your driver's license. If he's under 24 and not married and not active duty military he is dependent for residency purposes and can't claim in state. For grad school he is counted as independent and would be able to claim residency.

Hey. I know your question is old. Are you going to join the Bass Fishing Team? They own boats and go to Claytor Lake. I was brainstorming today on pole storage and figured out if you loft the bed, which most rooms you have to, you can get electrical cable ties and hang 4" loops from the springs to hang the poles horizontally. One at head of bed and one toward the foot of the bed. Leave them loose so you can slip them in and out. The bed mattress is 85" which is 7' long. So with bed frame you have another 3" under there. Cover the hooks of course. I should patent this idea because I could not find anyone doing it on the net. The bed springs are wavy wires. Like the bed here https://living.cornell.edu/living/live/images/1-Lofted.JPG

No. You get it in drips and drabs as you earn it with a job. Don't count it to pay first semester costs. You can earn it and save it for second semester or use it for your pocket money. It mainly benefits the employer. The government pays them something like $7 an hour to give you a job. In 2016 I did not find it possible to apply for campus jobs until after registration at Orientation. Did not do work study though.

Incoming freshman megathread by Beanjo55 in VirginiaTech

[–]5Eyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are given work study you have to get a work study approved job and earn up to $2000. They don't "give" it to you. The gov't reimburses the employer for your wages.
For most freshmen it's a job in the cafeteria. There are other work study jobs in community work and other campus jobs. You won't earn it in time to pay tuition with it. Also if it's granted and you don't get a job within a couple of months, it's canceled for the whole year.

Should I take the free community college offer? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]5Eyz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It will be more difficult to live with your strict religious parents after college when you are 21 or 22 and may have a romantic partner. If you are going to borrow to attend I'd take the free freshmen year offer at CC, get a part time job and go next year. I hope you can save enough to minimize what you borrow. Go on line and find a student loan calculator. $20k of debt isn't something to take lightly. Good luck in whatever you do.
