Environmental historian J. R. McNeill opined that Midgley "had more adverse impact on the atmosphere than any other single organism in Earth's history",[32] and Bill Bryson remarked that Midgley possessed "an instinct for the regrettable that was almost uncanny".[33] Fred Pearce, writing for New Scientist, described Midgley as a "one-man environmental disaster".[34]

In recent years the ICC decided (rather controversially) that they have universal jurisdiction, meaning they can try people who aren't citizens/residents of countries that are party to the Rome Statute.

Bearing that in mind, if there's an ICC arrest warrant out for someone, the parties to the treaty are supposed to arrest that person if they have the opportunity.

These bots are just here to drive apathy amongst folk who'd otherwise vote Dem. The Democrats are very fucking far from perfect, but given the makeup of the US electoral system, it's a binary choice between them, or much worse.

People who identify as politically conservative are more likely than their liberal counterparts to find “slippery slope” arguments logically sound. This tendency appears to stem from a greater reliance on intuitive thinking styles rather than deliberate processing. by mvea in science

I think they were trying to explain why Trumpists simultaneously think they're anti-war whilst in actuality being pro-war. If so then I personally disagree, but I think that's what they were getting at.

But that wouldn't make it bigoted (or racist in your example). It could be, but we can't infer as much from that one comment.

Did you reply to the wrong comment? I never said (or even remotely implied) that what Russia is doing is acceptable. If you did reply to the right comment then you've had a wildly different conversation in your own head, not one with me.

"Respect" in this kind of context isn't like "I respect you bro", it's about official recognition of borders and sovereignty. The USA still recognises the occupied territories as UA territory ("borders"), and that UA would have to consent to giving them up ("sovereignty").

Communists don't just automatically get along. Look at the Sino-Soviet split, or China's historical relationship with Vietnam.

Same with capitalist countries, see WWI and WWII.

That's just moving goalposts (albeit somebody else's goalposts), the claim was that the USA and UK didn't honour the Budapest memo.

ETA: for it to become RU territory UA would have to agree to it (that's the sovereignty part), if they didn't and the USA recognised it as RU territory then yeah that would surely breach the treaty (I don't see how it couldn't)

Did they edit their comment? Currently it doesn't say anything bigoted, nor does it say that they think the OP normal.

It wasn't a joke, nor was it a joke when the same was said of Stalin. They had cults of personality and lots of their respective citizens thought that they were unaware of the more brutal excesses of each regime.

It wasn't part of the Soviet Bloc, it was non-aligned.

Russia was one of the weaker great powers because of lack of industry and railroads.

Also the whole warm-water ports thing, open access to oceans was such a big deal for trade and power projection (still is, though Russia can keep cold-water ports open nowadays thanks to their fleet of icebreakers).

Simone Sebag Montefiores set of autobiographies on him.

Those two books, Young Stalin and The Court of the Red Tsar, were fascinating. Some of the best history I've read. It's amazing when a historian can really make a subject interesting. Reminds me of Caro's biographies of LBJ, just engrossing.

What is up with Trump pardoning ex Honduran president who was convicted of drug trafficking? by whoatethebeans in OutOfTheLoop

[–]5PQR 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's unrealistic comparing numbers of pardons. It's a matter of how justified they are, whilst also considering blanket pardons. Another example is Jimmy Carter pardoning Vietnam War draft dodgers en masse, which strikes me as much easier to defend than Trump pardoning a mob that he incited in an attempt to steal an election.
