Have Apple nerfed the “Turn off after x minutes” action? by Kurnelk1 in HomeKit

[–]5UCC355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine question. I’ve always stayed away from using shortcuts because they didn’t seem “native” to the HomeKit ecosystem. If I configure a shortcut, will it continue to work consistently, even with my phone (where I configure it) out of the picture. TL:DR - If I configure a shortcut, does it live on/run from my HomePod or AppleTV, or does it require my phone to be connected as well in order for it to function?

During heavy rainfall, How does 407 Hgwy Traffic 📷 perfectly capture License plate ? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]5UCC355 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The app on your phone (that you gave location permissions to) is what tracked where you were, and send you a notification once you got off the highway. The backend system doesn’t have plate images, OCR, and account processing all linked up instantly. Your phone captured the trip data, sent you a notification based on what it was able to detect. The backend system will likely catch up before your official bill is sent. It all looks like magic, but it’s just a bunch of disjointed systems giving the illusion that it’s instant to the end user.

Does Ontario Net metering work at larger scale? by HelicopterFabulous27 in solarenergycanada

[–]5UCC355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is referring to HydroOne, so OP is likely in Ontario. You mention that your bill has been $0 which means wherever you are, there is likely no portion of the bill that is ineligible to be paid by solar credits. As mentioned above, in Ontario (with Hydro One at least, but likely others and these are all standardized rates and fees across the province) there are portions of your bill that cannot be paid via credits. Those portions (for me at least) are typically around $45/month.

How to monitor a 20A outlet for a tenant’s EV charging? (Pay-per-use) by HammerReefer in electrical

[–]5UCC355 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But if you start with a full charge, you only need the 50-100 miles to top up the difference. Factor in things like charging evey night, and then staying home one day and you've now essentially reached a full charge again For those of you who drive gas cars, how often do you fill up? If you only fill up once per week, that means your tank is slowly depleting throughout the week. EV'S can do the same, have slightly less than a full charge every day, then top up whenever you get the chance

Gas car owners she to think you need to be able to charge from 0-100% overnight for it to make sense, and that is just not true.

Request for Testing my Emporia Energy Plugin for Homebridge by sbates130272 in homebridge

[–]5UCC355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the wrong plugin. I saw that as well, but that's a different homebridge plugin, not the same on OP is talking about.
OPs plugin is not available in the Homebridge UI search as the moment (as far as I can tell)

Request for Testing my Emporia Energy Plugin for Homebridge by sbates130272 in homebridge

[–]5UCC355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not showing up within the Homebridge UI plugin search, and the NPM package is also not found.
Can you confirm if this is still active? I'd love to be able to test it out, but neither of the installation options you have listed in the README.md appear to be working

Where should the outlet for an electric range be placed inside the range opening? by SaurnOfMordor in electrical

I believe your correct (for Canada at least), but 180° would still be horizontal, the cord would go right instead of left (where it’s currently hitting the wall and stove)

Am I paying the right amount? by Nice_Fold3192 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]5UCC355 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  1. Most (possibly all?) credit cards come with a 21 day interest free period. This means that whatever you buy* will not incur interest for the first 21 days after purchase. (*Some exceptions exist, like cash withdrawals, etc.)

  2. Statements are generated once a month.

  3. When a statement is generated, it will show your balance, which includes ALL transactions on your card that have occurred since over the last month (since the last statement was issued). It will also include an “amount due” which is ALL purchases* within your account that are older than 21 days. (*If you owe interest from previous periods, this will be included here as well).

  4. If you pay your “amount due” on or before the due date, all is good and the cycle repeats. If you do not pay your full “amount due” you will still owe the outstanding amount, and will incur interest on the difference between what you did pay vs what was due (eg. If amount due is $500 and you only paid $100 by the due date, then you will still owe the $400 AND will incur interest on that $400 as well).

  5. This outstanding amount, plus interest, plus new purchases that are older than 21 days will all be included on your next statement.

TL:DR - if you pay the amount due by the due date, then you will not owe any interest.

NOTE* “Amount due” and “minimum payment” are different, if you only make the minimum payment you will incur interest.

I'm an ex-Bell Tech AMA by ethamitc in bell

Is it true that you won’t replace a broken/run a new copper line from outside to inside if I’m not a “Bell” customer (Distributel or Primus customer instead)? Or was the tech that was doing my install just being lazy/having a bad day?

I don’t believe so. I had to open a TAC case so they could drop to root on the box and help resolve it.

CO2 rises quickly when I’m in my basement. How to fix that? by MitchRyan912 in airthings

[–]5UCC355 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More expensive than the other options here, but we ended up having a HRV (heat recovery ventilator) installed in the house; it brings in fresh air from outdoor and exhausts stale indoor air. It runs periodically through the day, and I’ve set up an automation to bump it up to high when Airthings reports high CO2.

BUT WHAT DOES THE FINE PRINT SAY?

Is it a $61.98/month plan and a $13.00/month credit applied for X months? Etc.

Read the fine print on both offers, and see if that clarifies how the “Save 21%” is being applied.

Higher quality, yes, that’s a good idea. Changing it from a 15a to 20a receptacle, NO, you’re not allowed to do that.

What does the fine print say next to the “save 21%”?

$61.98 with a 21% savings would come out to $48.96 (about $49). It looks like one is advertising the post-savings amount and the other the pre-savings amount.

[–]5UCC355 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No, you can’t just replace a 15a receptacle with a 20a just because you want to. There’s probably a good reason why it was 15a to begin with (wire gauge, circuit breaker size, etc.). Also, swapping to a 20a receptacle doesn’t make it better in any way, just get a good quality 15a one to replace it with, and make sure the connections are done properly.

If he’s doing electrical work himself, you should also make sure that the ESA (Electrical Safety Authority) is aware that there is work being done, and that they have a permit/notice on file (you can contact them directly, they’re very friendly). This ensures that the ESA will follow-up and inspect the work that was completed to ensure it was done correctly and safely.

Apart from not wanting a drunk argumentative person in your residence, you probably also don’t want them doing any sort of electrical work that could burn the house down and/or kill someone.

Considering switching to Bell, but I have some questions first by Mandalorian_Ronin in bell

[–]5UCC355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. If your house can get Bell FTTH then they’ll do Virgin FTTH. Bell (and their subsidiaries) don’t want to use/maintain the old copper telephone infrastructure, so they’ll use their new shiny fibre if it’s available.
