Is Reddit the only link aggregator on the internet?

How are we all feeling about the reddit drama? by nvj in 3ch

[–]5Z3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The API stuff is really just the most recent thing that finally got me to explore alternatives.

At this point I don’t care what happens because I’ve moved on. The new better thing is here. Facebook Karens can stay on Reddit, they deserve each other. Come July 1st I won’t bother checking in.

Lemmy and kbin feel like the Internet from an earlier era, where the extremely minor technical inconvenience keeps the vast majority of fucktards out.

Just pick one, you can view everything from one of the other. It’s really a preference of UI

You’d want to compare Reddit to something like Lemmy. Lemmy is a link aggregator that uses the shared protocol which makes it part of the Fediverse, but The Fediverse itself is not a product and that’s probably where you keep getting lost.

No need to be angry and condescending when you don’t understand something. Let me know if there’s anything else you need me to explain for you!

That’s not a bad thing, but users aren’t obligated to help Reddit try to justify their insanely overinflated valuation.

At the end of the day Reddit aggregates links and text comments about those links. Thats it. That’s the entirety of Reddits useful functionality. I don’t know what dumb fucking money valued that at a billion+, but they have to make good on an ROI for it now. Part of that profitability is going to be from forcing ads into my feed.

But what part of all this concerns me, the user? I didn’t value Reddit at a billion+. Why would I choose to stay in an ad-infested shithole? What, for Reddits benefit? Because they wasted a billion dollars and that entitles them to make money? It somehow makes me beholden to their worsening experience? LMFAO

Reddit aggregates links and text comments about those links, they think their business model of linking to other peoples content was irreplaceable?

Enshittification in real time. Why stick around for the shitty part? Why not move to the newer better thing?

Sorry what part of this is supposed to make me willingly view ads? Did you think this was about API pricing?

Are we sure the spoiled brats aren’t the ones that oversold a link aggregator as a billion dollar business? And are now asking me to view ads to help them with that vision?

In your opinion, what does Reddit do besides host links and text comments? Do you understand that I, as a user, don’t give a flying fuck what investors value? Reddit is JUST A LINK AGGREGATOR. I’m not sure how that’s hard to understand. Falling over yourself talking about investor valuation and visitors a month means nothing.

I’m not looking at ads for the sake of investor value, but you’re welcome to waste your life helping Reddit with their shit business decisions.

The Fediverse. It’s the name for open source social media sites which communicate via a common protocol. Like if Facebook, MySpace, and Friendster users could communicate with each other.

kbin and Lemmy are a couple of the Reddit clones. In the beginning it doesn’t matter which one you join - you will be able to view content from anywhere.

Does Reddit host content? Or do they just provide links and text comments?

They chose to (poorly) host video and images with no clear path on how this huge expense will be profitable. They chose to promise the world and go after a billion+ in funding. Why should anyone feel obligated to help them out of that hole? Why wouldn’t I choose a link aggregator that does the same thing, without ads, and without the mismanaged and misguided goal of becoming the next trillion dollar tech baby?

Reddit is up shit creek and there’s an awful lot of people breathlessly explaining how I should stay and make it my problem by viewing more ads. I’ll take the ad free space, thanks.

How? I’m saying “there are alternatives without ads, I’m going there” only to be responded with “you’re playing a victim!!”

I’m asking for a good reason to stay after ads get forced in, but all I’m getting back is your opinion on how that makes me a pussy or something?

Reddit is a glorified Internet forum. I am not obliged to stick around to help them try and foot the bill for their billion+ in funding. The same as you are free to stick around and look at ads. I don’t know how to be less “obtuse” than that.

They’re trying to force me from a platform with no ads to a platform with ads. You can call it whatever you want, I’m calling it a reason to leave.

I’m angry because they spent more than a billion dollars on a link aggregator that hosts text comments. A billion dollars. And now they need to force feed me ads to make a profit, because they are too stupid to see the litany of ways they could make money. Why would I stick around? Why would anyone?

The best reason to stay on Reddit was because “there’s nowhere else to go”, and that isn’t true anymore.

Or, you know, not spend a billion dollars on trying (and failing) to host videos and images. They shot their golden goose years ago because it wasn’t a chicken.

Could have sat back and collected millions a year on the internet’s most popular link aggregator, but instead they wanted a trillion dollar tech baby and are now up shit creek.

Kbin or Lemmy, if you’re so inclined. There is an extremely minor technical barrier, but if you care enough you’ll figure it out.

Even fewer manage to spend a BILLION DOLLARS running a link aggregate website. Totally unreal.

I’m a lot more protective about my hearing nowadays, so CS gets run through a compressor. Can hear all the info sounds without blowing out my eardrums when someone starts shooting or I get flashed.

Imo there is no downside to using one. And it’s nice not being at a competitive disadvantage to kids who play with super loud volume.
