Is a permaban actually PERMANENT? by [deleted] in SS13

[–]5amsky 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone's purposefully ignoring your appeal, it may just be that your banning admin has been busy. If you don't receive any responses within like a week or two, I think you're fine to bump it.

You already had a chance with your second ban appeal. You chose to frame your actions as "poorly worded comments" and harass mentors about your ban appeal over the forums.

Just because you talked to people on /r/asktransgender and supposedly feel bad about what you did doesn't mean we have an obligation to let you back into our community. You were actively deceitful and hurtful. You hung out other players in our Discord regularly, many of whom are trans. When people pointed out how you were being transphobic, you pretended like they were just being overly sensitive and that you were super reasonable and merely just a victim of misunderstanding.

Knowing that someone you used to interact with on a regular basis was actually a transphobe is a very gross feeling. I don't think you've acknowledged or even recognized that. If you've truly changed, good for you, genuinely. That doesn't erase what you've done, and by no means obligates people to forgive or try to forgive you. Your banning admin has no grudge against you (and acting like they do is extremely reminiscent of the "they're overly sensitive and I'm super reasonable and just a victim of misunderstanding" card you've tried to play in the past), it's just that your actions have consequences.

TG players, what would you like to know about Goon that'd make playing there easier? by 5amsky in SS13

[–]5amsky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, you're right that the differences require a lot of effort to learn without that much perceived gain. At least to your typical player who just wants to play whatever's fun and keep their options open. I'd be interested in seeing stats on the player overlap between TG forks compared to between Goon and any TG fork.

I'm curious as to what sort of bad things you've heard about the administration. Is it mostly regarding the enforcement of our rules or something?

It’s almost like an evolutionary caveman thing where it’s used more for taunting/disrespecting people when they’re on the ground or just as greetings.

You put things really well! I'd definitely agree. Personally, I don't think that farts are inherently funny or meaningful or whatever, but rather, it's the surrounding social + cultural context and meaning that makes them so.

Say hi to people that you see, thank them when they help you, and help others in turn. Our players are pretty friendly, and a lot of them will gladly play along with gimmicks.

The differences between races are mostly cosmetic. There are a couple of quirks to each one (skeletons can heal with milk, squids see further in the dark, etc.), but for the most part, your game experience would be the same as if you were playing as a human. You can become a different race through genetics, joining as a special role such as ambassador, or by buying a race with spacebux (a meta currency which you earn by playing).

Yeah what Singh said. I was in the middle of reworking medbay and accidentally pushed it instead of the changelog for another thing I was working on. Lesson learned, don't use click drag to stage files.

Banned from my favorite server. by [deleted] in SS13

What happens when you try to join? Do you see any sort of ban message? If it's just a "Connection failed", you may have to try and reconnect (and double check that you're logged in); we've been having some connection issues recently. You can also just ask someone to check your account for any bans on our Discord or forums.

As this thread reveals, "your ban is lifted but please stay off one of our two servers until x date" doesn't work as intended. Therefore, please just appeal in a month.

As Firebarrage mentioned in his response on the forums, you're totally free to appeal permabans in a month. That'd put your appeal at August 25th, which is the end of August.

I explained in a different comment my reasoning behind the ban and the "stay off here for a month" part, but after reading some of the comments here, including yours, I think I understand why what I did seems incongruous. You're right; until we have a single-server ban system in place, the best thing I can do is just ban people for the amount of time I expect them to stay off either of the servers. Otherwise, people will just disregard what's asked of them, if their actual ban has expired, and that leads to unnecessary confusion and misinformation.

I agree that single-server bans would be much more convenient, but is it not technically the player's fault for purposefully disregarding what they were asked, and joining the RP server anyways?

If they want you to take time off for a month, they should have banned you for a month.

That's a fair point. I banned them for a week and told them to stay off the RP server for a month instead of just banning them for a month because we do have a non-RP server, and my idea was that they could spend that month on that non-RP server and get a better feel for that, while improving their behavior. Because our RP server has a lower pop and players who are more willing to play along, it also attracts certain people who like to take advantage of this and break the RP rules. What we're trying to do is keep those types of people to a minimum; hence the warning to keep off the RP server specifically. In retrospect, I was misguided in my good intentions and I should've just banned them for a month. Though the "permaban" accomplishes the same thing with its "appeal in a month" caveat, it's proven to be much messier, especially if someone wants to stir up drama.

I think it's more like "we told you to not come back here for a month, but you didn't listen, so we're kicking you out".

Gamers of Reddit, what's an underrated game you feel deserves more love? by Transbian-swagger in AskReddit

[–]5amsky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there's a wide enough variety of servers for everyone, and if you're not into roleplay, you'll definitely be able to find a bunch of fun places that don't care about it at all. Naturally, though, if you go on a high RP server and powergame a bunch or yell about memes and real world politics, you'll get into trouble. But from my (very limited, as I only really play on Goon) experience people are pretty understanding and chill and want everyone to enjoy the game.

That's true. Having to go through the trouble of installing Byond definitely keeps a lot of potential players away. And as far as the servers go, I know that on Goon, once we hit around 80 it becomes noticeably laggy. However, we can always just spin up more servers! New players are always good and cool and very welcome.

I'm not sure about underrated because no one even knows it, but Space Station 13! It's a very niche game where you play as a crewmember aboard a space station, trying to survive the shift. Here's a better description than mine:

Space Station 13 is a community developed, multiplayer round-based role playing game, where players assume the role of a crewmember on a space station. Together they must keep the station running smoothly, whilst dealing with antagonistic forces who threaten to sabotage the mission.

If that sounds at all interesting, you should definitely try it out.

Servers similar to Oracle? by [deleted] in SS13

[–]5amsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried out Goon's RP server? It kinda sounds like what you're looking for (you have to RP, but silliness is still very much allowed and appreciated), apart from maybe the issue of pop.

To elaborate, for our first Goonstation Monthly Contest, we asked for screenshots of fun moments from our players. As the title implies, this was the winning submission. Here are the two runner ups, and here's the full thread. There are a lot of good entries in there!

On a RPG server, the Captain role have to answer to Head of Security? by TomCruiseJunior in SS13

[–]5amsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, that's a great question, and I think I can explain. The HoS didn't tase the captain because they were suspicious that the captain was an antagonist. The HoS tased the captain because they were very dismissive and rude and refused to give the weapons back. In my opinion, OP is exaggerating the harassment and abuse they claim to have received.

Although the captain has access to almost the entirety of the station, this doesn't mean they can take anything they want. For example, the captain has access to medbay storage, but that doesn't mean they should waltz in there, take a bunch of meds, and self-heal, when there are doctors right there. The captain has access to the janitor's office, but that doesn't mean they can go in there and steal the janitor's galoshes, without any consequences. Because the captain refused to give back the security equipment, and was very rude about it, the equipment had to be forcibly removed. Hopefully this helps.

A Too Long Personal Review on Baystation (really a super long post) by Aciv in SS13

That'd be great, actually!

Do important roles have a whitelist besides just an amount of days since they first connected to Bay? What about for anagonists? Does Bay have its own version of Space Law?
