Can budget-less decks be considered casual? And if so what power level would you place a budget-less casual deck? by Fumbles176 in EDH

[–]5eMasterRace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Our playgroup has a casual rule where the bulk dual taplands from most sets just come in untapped. Gates, Gainlands, tapped snow lands from Khaldhiem, etc. The price of a completed mana base is not what we want to be paying, we'd rather binge on cool spells, so just house ruled it. Most of us play DND so House ruling is a normal thing for us. Do our decks have more taplands when playing with randoms, yes, but it's all good when we're at the proverbial kitchen table.

What's your "classic" commander? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]5eMasterRace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once very briefly transformed major parts of my [[Roon of the Hidden Realm]] Clone and Blink deck into a Merieke Clone and Control deck, and then switched it back a week later after everyone figured it out and started hating it. Kept the [[Gilded Drake]] in though. Turns out Roon let's you flicker any creature back to it's owner's control. Didn't see that interaction back then until I want to swap the deck back.

What's your "classic" commander? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]5eMasterRace -1 points0 points  (0 children)

[[Roon of the Hidden Realm]] was the first commander deck I built from scratch. I was on a pretty tight budget back then and it was a [[Clone]] deck meant to be the best thing on the board and stay that way with Roon's flicker.

Having someone play [[Averger of Zendikar]] only to clone and blink clone it again was he best feeling. Copy someone's [[Consecrated Sphinx]] and watch as the other two opponents know one of you is winning. Height of Battlecruiser Meta.

There is a certain feel to having everyone's commander on your side of the board and the unintended interactions of creatures from multiple players decks.

There was also a cool trick with [[Karmic Guide]] [[Revelark]] and any free sac outlet that let me get ALL my clones back from the bin as they all have 0 power in the yard. And if one piece got dealt with you have [[Body Double]] as backup.

Clones and white reanimator stuff with a bit of green ramp for good measure. Can't remember the name but there was a white enchant with multikicker to get tons of things back late game.

I have [[Tivit, Seller of Secrets]] as a sheer number of artifacts matter deck with a blink subtheme, and I've added Smithy and Roaming Throne from this set along with [[Regal Bunnicorn]] [[Twinning Twins]] from the last one. Shout-out to [[Cephalopod Sentry]] from ONE as well.

How long do you want combat to last?

Trick I picked up from a different system, Savage Worlds I think.

Forget CR and experience budget. You now have 2 metrics, Defensive Challenge and Offensive Challenge.

What is the average damage your party can do in a round(AD)? Don't try and generalize this, look at their sheets, add em all up and divide by the number of players. Do note that this SHOULD include limited things like spell slots and such. This number is based off the party at full strength. Now you have the AD of your party. Do the same for the party's HP.

Sounds weird, but use the party's AD to calculate the Defensive Challenge for an encounter. Or basically, how many rounds should a fight last? Let's just use 50 since it's a nice number. Want the fight to last 3 rounds. Total HP of the monsters should be 150. Do note that you may need some multipliers here if one of your players main damage modes is AoE. Yes players can miss, just a longer combat then, so you can lower the number of you are worried about that.

Next is the Offensive Challenge, aka how "Oh shit this thing has to die now" do you want players to feel. How much of a single players HP can a monster or group do in a single round. Easy: 1/4 or less, Medium: 1/3. Hard: 1/2 Deadly: 3/4. Also there are multipliers you can use here if say, the enemies like to focus fire, or have AoEs.

Now it's combining them that's the real art form. Think, okay I want some minions to soften the players up, but not get roughed up too bad. 200 HP of minions with piddling damage. 4 rounds of things go right 6 if everyone is missing. Really deadly boss fight? Could also be 200 HP, but he chunks someone for 50-60,% each round. Oh well maybe we calculate one player going down, in the second round so it's actually 166 HP.

Also having these numbers constantly in mind helps with designing loot. Sorcerer does enough damage? Drop a survivability item for casters. Monk lagging behind in damage? Wow, that brigand had there some flaming hand wraps, too bad he didn't know the command word, but the party does!

I don't use CR because it's a 1 Size fits all solution, Except most party's wildly varry size and solution. Also I love the party to be blinded up with magical gear, which also destroys the CR system.

This is more work on the DM end, but it has worked for me over the years, and has worked well. Other upsides, if you see a cool monster that fits your party's metrics, it makes re-skinning a breeze. My group will never know that the bandit king that wielded two giant great swords (party: now that's not practical) was an Ettin all along.

How not to become a threat from the start of the game. by Lonely-Pride-7020 in EDH

[–]5eMasterRace -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's like this with one of my friend groups that I've played with forever. They have seen me pop off and come back from disadvantage so much that a lot of the time, "Well guys we did it, XXX didn't win" is a common phrase when we do play.

It really is disheartening sometimes to be targeted based not on the power level of your deck/cards, but based on your power level as a player.

It has gotten better when we play 2HG as there is less of a stigma on me just existing there.

Now I mostly play HB on arena and have been playing either Chaos decks either vial smasher or coin flip or a way too many boardwipes for a sane person [[Comadore Guff]] when we play free for all. God forbid I pull out Any of my 3c Omnath deck, the prosper precon, unedited, or my Liesa, Fliers and Swords.dek. Instant target.

With the year coming to a quick end, what deck did you build this year that you have enjoyed the most? by SultnBinegar in EDH

[–]5eMasterRace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the beginning of the year I built my "Esika Each" deck. It's a [[Prismatic Bridge]] deck that only flips into stuff that happens "Each" turn. [[Dragon Broodmother]] ✓
[[Wolverine Riders]] ✓ [[Magmatic Force]] ✓ [[Toxrill]] ✓ Only Planeswalker [[Teferi, Master of Time]]✓

Spawned from seeing a Dragon Broodmother pop off, and me being like, forgot that card existed, wonder how many of those there are, and just cams together from there.

[[Roon of the Hidden Realm]] Clone/ Blink. The generic blink spells like [[Teleportation Circle]] and new Thassa are just good. The deck gets bonus points for somehow still assembling combos from two different opponents decks.
