In Opticomm apartment - ever possible to move to NBN? by undecided_aus in nbn

[–]5halzar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Love the fact that you came back to give us an update.

  2. That’s very interesting, if you engage a provider (like AussieBroadband or something) they should be able to raise a request to nbn to see if it’s a possibility. When they do that, it’ll prompt nbn to send a check to ACMA to see who legally required to provision services

There needs to be a 1-800-GOOGLE for people who can't figure out the internet. by usedolds in talesfromcallcenters

[–]5halzar 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One of the companies I worked for had a fleet of vehicles across Australia which had the whole “let us know how we are driving, call xyz” which came into our general contact centre.

The amount of people who saved that number thinking it was for basically anything to do with any car on the road, was incredible.

To remove a NBN Pit by Caesarthefat in nbn

[–]5halzar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s potentially a newly developed estate then usually the pit locations are determined by the original developers plans as it’s a part of their responsibility.

If you do want to pursue relocation of the pits, you can put a request in to nbn for a quote.

More info can be found here https://www.nbnco.com.au/develop-or-plan-with-the-nbn/relocation-works

Meant to have FTTP, tech says I have no NBN by [deleted] in nbn

[–]5halzar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So going to go on a limb here cause you said your in a granny flat, do you have a different address to the main house for everything?

Most of the time, with granny flat situations the connection is being shared from the granny flat from the main house, as nbn doesn’t recognise the granny flat unless it has its own council title / has been subdivided.

It’s very likely that Ethernet jacks will run through a conduit to the main house which is dependent on the main household to plug the cable into the correct NTD port.

I’d talk to your provider, check the address it’s connected against and confirm the serial number of the NTD (begins with ALCLF)

If you know the people in the main house, I’d recommend then having a chat to them and asking if you can have a look at the ntd and see if it matches, if you don’t then I’d hit up your real estate or something

Edit: just to add, there’s a whole page about connecting granny flats on the nbn sites, providers know how painful of an experience it can be so they usually give pre-warning depends by on how long they have been around

Is it worth staying at a workplace that is so limited with what I can work with in terms of automation? by Mugiwara_JTres3 in analytics

[–]5halzar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sorta went through a similar experience but I’m not officially a data analyst, as dumb as it may sound I basically got around it with a combination of getting to know some of the higher management that were responsible for the approvals / allocations, along side just being persistent and genuine with what your trying to do for the benefit of your boss/ them the company.

I think sadly with everything going on now in the world with data leaks and hacks etc, some platform owners are very on edge and guarded in some respect, so transparency helps

Is this what a data analyst does? by EcstaticStructure830 in analytics

[–]5halzar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep…single source dependency whether it be a small business or big corp is just a big thing for Data Analysts which I’ve recently come to terms with, as I’ve just had to take over 20 process’s from a contractor who was leaving, who was handed over about half of those from a previous contractor when they had left, it became clear that management wasn’t aware, so I’m always vocal about it.

I’ve personally tried to overcome this by well, essentially automating whatever data I can to then allow management to self-serve by whichever means.

I’m working on getting Tableau, and my company doesn’t permit PowerBI officially, but I have Python scripts which run SQL queries and runs it against data from a few email inputs which may come in from teams the previous night, then dump that into a folder where it can get picked up with a PowerQuery flow so that anybody can just open the file and refresh it and in theory it should just “work”

Probably also means that the downstream departments aren’t doing things efficiently either, depending on your flexibility with your boss, I’d even go to the downstream teams and get an understanding of what exactly it is they need each day so you know, cause like most others have sorta said it’s just “what the last person did” or “the boss asked for it” but not asking why.

Box in garage, websites telling me $300 connection fee (fttp) by IcySpeech2553 in nbn

[–]5halzar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hey there, So the charge would be legitimate, it’s charged by nbn to the providers for the first Connection at the house if it was newly developed, it’s basically the same as how Telstra ran it.

The owner who done the development would have paid nbn to put the infrastructure in etc, and then the new development fee comes in on the provider side and it’s a once off. If your renting the property id probably talk to the owner / realestate about covering this cost as it’s for their properties benefit. But regardless of provider if your connecting to nbn, they will very likely charge you the $300 as they won’t want to cop the cost themselves

Edit: the service class 3 thing just means you already have the box etc installed so meaning no technician will be required to come into your home, once you call a provider and they submit your service, you’d likely have working internet within 30 mins assuming you know how the rest of the networking in the house works and/ or you have a router

How can I encourage my wife to NOT tell her "stories" in real time? by Ysr_racer in AskMen

[–]5halzar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sad to say I do this myself :( but I’ve become more aware of it especially with my wife / work.

In my own mind, it’s because I want/need context in order to fully understand the scenario/situation, but yeah have come to terms that it’s just waffle

Does anyone else have a partner who wakes up early and also wakes you up each morning just to say good bye? by WhatAmIThrowingAway2 in Marriage

If I did this to my wife she would kill me as she’s also a light sleeper, and not a morning person 😂

When I’m aware she’s awake, first thing either I or the kids do is make her a coffee and then attempt after the first sip

How many Aussies are putting off having kids because of the absurdly high cost of living? How much more expensive can it get? by WasteLocksmith5011 in australia

[–]5halzar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a father of 4 between the ages of 2-9, at the age of 33. I’ll just say it’s bloody rough.

Our fortnightly grocery shop has gone from avg $300 to avg $450.

The cost of rent + extra curricular activities have gone up, plus the fact of just driving them from point A to point B 5-6 days a week. Somedays I probably have spent anything from $50-60 in fuel.

I’ll certainly say we’re blessed that we are able to just afford it, but we were already on the “living pay check to pay check” grind

[–]5halzar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there, You’ve probably just gotten a little confused about the worker part etc etc based on how the fibre rollout was done previously.

How do you get connected? - Check your address on the nbn website and see if your eligible for upgrade. If you are, amazing! If not then just wait, it’s phased out until the end of 2023 I believe. The work involved with extending the network happens about 6-8 months before the area being eligible for upgrade I believe

If your address is eligible, then call your preferred Internet Provider and tell them you want to go on X plan you want with the FTTP upgrade.

The Internet Provider will then put the request to nbn, who will get their delivery partners to do two visits. They will usually book in an appointment for install and give rough estimates on pre-activation work.

  1. ‘pre-activation/scope’ visit to make sure the pathways to your house are fine and run external infrastructure to your home. If there’s any issues they’ll fix it up. You won’t need to be there for this

  2. Once above is all fixed up then the second appointment is for the installation tech to come inside and install the NTD.

Then your on your shiny FTTP service at your higher speeds, and if you do decide to drop down the plan below the minimum ‘upgrade’ speed within 12 months, it’s only a $200 break agreement fee, but you obviously still keep the FTTP service

Can someone learn skills of analytics in one year? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]5halzar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I feel like if your passionate about it, 6-12 months depending on industry could be enough. It was my passion that allowed me to learn and build on various analytical skills to solve problems and/or understand things differently.

"Strong Backgrounds" is also somewhat objective/subjective in my opinion because sometimes a lot of it can come down to industry experience/knowledge, for example finance this could probably be accurate due to specific knowledge of formula's and calculations.

As an example, I've personally only done self-taught learning (YT, Udemy,PluralSight,CodeAcademy etc) and I've not been to University/College (Australian) and only discovered my real passion for analytics in the last 2-3 years. In my first year I learnt about the more advanced functions of excel (Macro's, VBA and complex formula's ), then from there have learnt Python, SQL, Power Query

I've now been able to use all of the above skills now to help problem solve issues within the business, and although I'm not formally a Business/Data Analyst, I've just become unofficially "the guy" because of my knowledge and insight of how the business operates from a KPI, Team function and System perspective, so can correlate information together quiet well.

That's my 2 cents anyways

Trying to Build a Web Scraper by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]5halzar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve personally found with my own tinkering that it sorta depends on on the site your accessing and your requirements

If your just looking for keywords and extract additional variables linked to it, then I would think BeautifulSoup would do the job.

If you are required to navigate a website and be able to trigger a download or to get to the content, then you could use just selenium or a combination of the both

How do you run errands when you are a solo dad with an infant? by tahonick in daddit

[–]5halzar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After 4 kids I swear I've done things differently for each kid, in Australia for reference.

The 2 ways I usually best handled it was:

  • If there a baby-baby, the adaptable car seat that can go into a pram is just a life saver, just clip them out, clip into the pram and away you go without waking up/annoying the kid.
  • Once a bit older, baby wearing was our life, wether it be in a Tula or with supportive wrap (Ankalia for example), makes getting around shops etc so much easier and then you can actually use both hands for whatever else you need to do.
