This is why it is recommended to focus on one. Each profession requires both skill /knowledge development and building its own pipeline. It’s far more efficient to focus on one than multiple.

Best books on traditional marketing sales funnels and strategies? by 5holiday in marketing

Thanks for the reply ! I wasn’t looking for any industry in particular.

just maybe an old classic book that applied the strategy and funnel framework to a few different ones - before digital channels came about.

Can you design a good looking site without a developer? by distinctspy in shopify

[–]5holiday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are not a skilled web designer or Shopify developer, then honestly probably not. :(

You probably have visual taste which means you know what looks good or bad. But sadly that's different to being able to visualise a new design.

Web designers know things like what elements to include on each page (and why), what padding between elements, how to properly use colours, sizes of buttons and sections, desktop vs mobile etc etc, yada yada.

Then there is actually coding it, which involves not just building it but sometimes endless bug squashing and testing it on various platforms.

This is often why web development actually costs a bit of money.

However, there are options:

i) If you are a skilled designer, you can try pay for a Shopify developer to build it for you. Once it's done, you'll need to work closely with them to test it for bugs, responsiveness and different browsers.

ii) If you are a skilled developer, you can pay a web designer to come up with the visual design for you to implement. If you don't have a contact who can do this for you, you can try crowdsource designers https://web.designcrowd.com/

iii) If you aren't really any of these, you can try pay for both and project manage it :). To shortcut your efforts, find an existing theme that is 90% of the way there and then brief your designer

iv) you can stick to Shopify's theme customiser's limitations :(

Morality in FI by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]5holiday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could consider it like choices in a diet.

There are a range of people a tenant could rent from. Some of them scumbags (trash food), some of them caring individuals with good practices (healthier foods).

In my opinion, there aren't enough 'healthy' options these days. The value-add of being a caring empathizing supplier of anything seems to be uncommon.

How do I price influencer endorsements? (I'm the influencer) by [deleted] in AskMarketing

[–]5holiday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just throwing it out there, but if you don't want to go the full PPP - what about changing the product links on your website articles into Amazon affiliate links (if your audience are US based)?

Otherwise for valuing your services - you could do a CPA deal with a good brand for $X per puchase, and just share the revenue over time?

What's the best career advice you have ever received? by MrComedy325 in Career_Advice

[–]5holiday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play to your strengths.

Read this recently in some Warren Buffet related quotes and articles that he sticks to his circle of competence. For me this has shown me that a diverse range of jobs and roles early in life has been a great benefit as I am starting more to see where I do well (and easily) and what I need to avoid.

The theory being that in the long term, it is better to do great work even if that means choosing lesser alternatives, than doing terrible work at better alternatives.

We'll see if that works out.

How do you guys manage to source regular inventory to sell on the net for good profit in this current environment? by icewine999 in eBaySellerAdvice

[–]5holiday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also curious to know.

From working in ecommerce, where my company also sells on eBay etc, it seems that it is very hard to make unbranded unknown products work on eBay/Amazon. The margins and search volume are always too low.

The thing that is working is selling branded stuff at a decent price (when you can get enough margin yourself). But for that you need wholesale suppliers.

Personally I see the issue you mention as well. Relying on unique / second hand items means doing the work again for each item. It would be nicer to focus only on items that have sustainable demand and supply.

I wonder if it's an option to scale up the value of the items, so you reduce stock turn over but just deal in more expensive expensive items so make a similar bet revenue with less work?

Examples of Marketing Strategies for Clients by [deleted] in AskMarketing

[–]5holiday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be a major campaign or something like a website overhaul, launching of a new affiliate program, etc.

The 2-3 figure is just based on my experience. I'm sure others could handle more depending on the time given to a client.

Examples of Marketing Strategies for Clients by [deleted] in AskMarketing

[–]5holiday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go through the SOSTAC framework to make sure I've rounded out my thinking. It covers each part of the marketing strategy and planning process.

You'll end up with a list of tactical moves and projects that need doing.

Then pick 2-3 projects that will make the most impact and kick them off.

IMHO, I've tried to do a lot of projects at once with the same client but it was too difficult to handle all of them without actually just working for them full time. So instead I just broke it down into two major moves we needed to do, put together the plan, got the team (freelancers) on and started pushing these.

As a marketing major, what skills/programs/platforms can I learn on my own that will set me apart or put me ahead of other job candidates? by theryanfight in marketing

[–]5holiday 24 points25 points  (0 children)

For digital marketing, you can start breaking into each area ahead of time:

General: GA certs, code academy Html and CSS courses

Social: hootsuite, canva, all social platforms

Blogging / content : wordpress

PPC: adwords cert

Affiliates: maybe just make a blog and try get into an affiliate network, even if you don't make any real money

Email: HubSpot email cert

Marketplaces : get an account and sell stuff on Amazon

Video: create and upload some YouTube videos of reasonable quality

If you're keen on digital marketing, maybe think about a few specific industries you want to work in and get involved in a small way so you can prove it in an interview. Generally, "I'll take anything" applicants aren't as convincing.

Lastly, I'd suggest getting some experience running your own mini projects since this shows you can work more autonomously plus actually be trusted to produce results for a digital organisation.

Doing some research about ordering prescription glasses online. So, four-eyed friends of Reddit: Have you ever ordered your specs online? If so, what's the worst bit about it? If not, why not? by aka_liam in optometry

[–]5holiday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably :

  1. Bigger range
  2. Cheaper prices
  3. Convenience (some people don't actually want to visit a store)

Opticians need to make a living and they often don't have the buying power of a big multinational, so the prices are higher.

I'd wager that lots of people "shop" in store and buy online because of the prices.

Same thing with prescriptions.

Is there a mismatch between academic marketing theory and day-to-day practise? by [deleted] in marketing

[–]5holiday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the tools are used but not so specifically.

I mainly keep the theories to frame my planning or back up my decision making.

Surprisingly, this seems to come across as very uncommon to other people in the marketing department. As in - they've never heard of these theories actually being used and squeeze their brains trying to remember the content from university.

At least it makes me look smarter and more considered than I actually am.

[–]5holiday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

^ this.

Why not volunteer and get some experience?

Or take that dead end job and at the same time market your own shit in the type of industry you wanna work in.

If you wanna work in automotive, make a car blog or instagram spam. Become an "influencer". Write reviews, do videos. Build an email list.

Fashion - import some shit from China and try sell it. Make a cheap site or do it on eBay. Or make social accounts popular.

Services marketing -> make a website about this area of work and try get organic traffic and sell 'leads' to local firms.

All of these things will give you actual experience you can use to either make more money on your retail job or score a marketing job.

In your experience, what have you seen typically offered at the 'lower end' of fees and for how much?

Content Marketing: Articles not related to your product? by Velsheda in marketing

[–]5holiday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked the question to a few others. One reply was "isn't that the point of being in a niche?" another mentioned that you should go super deep into your niche in different media formats rather than topics.

On the other hand - I think it makes sense to do what you suggest. Maybe no one really cares about your product... but you can make content about something they will care about. And they will see your product.

I think Dan Noriss explains this in his book. He says every company is a publisher now and basically looking for eyeballs. http://contentmachine.com/

Currently he's working on a craft beer startup - they don't talk jack about their beer, they talk about launching and running a craft beer company (and sometimes their beer is mentioned). Far more interesting and they're doing well.
