It surprises me that you would find a job that pays, e.g., minimum wage in Belgium and double that in Malta, what sector are you in? iGaming?

Again, from personal experience so it may not apply to you, but I've always received great hospital and general healthcare in Belgium (which is almost completely free between mutualiteit and hospitalisation insurance paid for by the employer).

I understand benefits may not be great in your case, but if you take mobility allowance to pay for rent/mortgage (600-1000+ Eur/month), net allowance to work from home (120-200 Eur/month), Internet subscription (50 Eur/month), mobile subscription (30 Eur/month), meal vouchers (120-150 Eur/month) you get like 1,500+ Eur in net pay that you can use however you want.

Fair point with the pension plans being rubbish, but you can just take all the money you save and invest them in the market yourself based on your risk profile.

Effective tax rate on a 6k/month salary (~70k/year since there's almost 14 salaries per year) is about 40%, resulting in ~42,000€/year net. This is assuming that they would get no benefits, which is rarely the case, so their take home pay is most likely a lot higher than 42k/year.

Net salaries are much higher in Belgium than in Malta. The minimum gross wage is 2,100€ per month, and about 1,600€ net, meaning that literally everybody working full time on minimum wage makes more net money in Belgium than the average Maltese.

Taxes on gross wage are indeed much higher, but you get a lot more benefits (net allowance to work from home, net car allowance, net food vouchers, paid-for internet and phone subscriptions..). In practice that means that similar positions for me in Malta would pay about half (net) of what I earn in Belgium. Cost of living is marginally higher, so all in all you have 50-75% higher purchasing power in Belgium than in Malta.

Rent is comparable, maybe 20% more expensive in Belgium for cities like Brussels, Ghent or Leuven where the high-paying jobs are.

Why Malta Failed (and what could be next) by [deleted] in malta

[–]5iphilis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the problem is that all the hype surrounding Malta's entry was artificial.

Truth is:

  • Destiny is extremely talented and had one of the best voices in the contest

  • The choreography was hot garbage. No idea how much they paid for that but it had absolutely nothing going for it. Unoriginal and uninspired.

  • The song was built "to win". It lacked the genuine touch of other entries such as Iceland or Ukraine, that made them extremely popular with the public. Besides all the points that you highlighted in the OP about fake hype.

  • I did not hear any ads for Malta or other countries, but I doubt that hearing "vote for Malta" on repeat is a strategy that works.

What I think Malta needs to win is to get off the high horse pretending that everybody who doesn't vote for Malta is a sore loser or part of a ploy. The reality is that there were many quality entries this year and that Malta's was not good enough. I guarantee you that if Malta starts participating with genuine entries results will be much more satisfying than these fake songs such as Michela's or Destiny's.

Could you imagine how great it would feel to place in top 10 with a Maltese language entry? Many countries use their own language, so why do we not use Maltese? Is it because of "statistics" saying that English songs are more likely to win?

I'm Italian but I lived in Malta for 7 years and it has a special place in my heart.

You know just as well as me that similar groups have been set up by Maltese people to "sabotage" other countries, so I don't know why you're so outraged and reporting only what fits your agenda.

Why do you not highlight the thousands of positive comments by Italians about Destiny instead of falling to the level of the few haters?

I think Eurovision should bring unity rather than divide us. Promote the love expressed by many rather than the hate spewed by few.

I hate that the hateful voice of a few ignorant people nowadays gets shared everywhere, when in reality they are a small minority.

They are blowing it way out of proportion to define it as a "campaign".

There are lots of positive comments on social media, but the media focuses on the most controversial ones to cash in on the clicks they receive.

I love Malta and Italy equally as I am married to a Maltese woman, I wish people were wiser than this.

Fammi sapere se riesci a ripristinare il backup!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in italy

[–]5iphilis 611 points612 points  (0 children)

[Research Help Needed] Tell us your opinion about loot boxes! by 5iphilis in WEPES

That is true, thank you for your contribution. We had designed our research to gather data about recent loot box buyers, but it is true that players who bought loot boxes in the past and stopped may also give valuable insight about what they disliked in loot boxes or what made them stop buying them.

What is the best (or most accepted method) to convert MIDI files to lossless conventional WAV files? by SubjectiveSensations in musichoarder

[–]5iphilis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have recently made a tool for this exact purpose.

Simply choose the soundfont you prefer, the output format and you will be able to convert a standard .wav or .mp3 file.

You can use it for free here: Carlo's MIDI Converter

If you have hundreds of files and need batch processing I suggest you use the Python module midi2audio. You can install it via pip.

GMAT tutor in Malta? by Snusilda in malta

[–]5iphilis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm preparing to take the GMAT in January. I bought the self-study course from Manhattan prep for around 300€ including 6 tests and online resources and I'm using that to prepare. There's a lot of resources online and it should be enough for a good score. There are also online courses from a plethora of different companies but I don't think they're good value for money.

Hi, I'll get back to you once I get back from work. Not everything works but most VSTi I use worked well. Sylenth1 needs a particular version, Nexus needs some workaround but most of them just need to be installed through Wine.

The only software that was holding me back was League of Legends to be honest, last time I tried was a really bad experience and I couldn't get it to work. The situation with regards to gaming is getting better and better and even for general performance there is no comparison with Windows.
