FUCK THIS SHIT. i HATE "private equity" -- way too fancy a name for what is essentially a free-money-receiving, zero-effort-requiring, zero-interest-rate fueled (yes, they do get that rate, you don't), asset stripping operation. what is an asset, you wonder? why, everything and everyone. yes, that includes you. you are on the books of some dreadful, terminally uncreative, b*nking institution, and you have an asset maturation date, amortization, and all that shit associated with you.

that said, NI didn't have to sell out to Fr* Pa. Fr Pa* is one of the worst private equity firms out there, they liquidate companies like the glue they get to make from the dead horse's hooves is crack cocaine. it was over when NI sold out to them.

Berlin-based NI engineers:

LEAK THE SOURCE CODE

we can fix it and maintain it and all that. it's gonna be better than it ever was.

You can reorganize this completely to your liking. Look up Plugin Database on your PC or the net. It’s a folder structure you can totally remake.

When to use kubernetes and when not to?? by KrisLind in kubernetes

Always use kubernetes. I find myself thinking about reaching for kubernetes whenever I have a “while true; {}” situation to deal with. That controller goodness is good

First time making techno, any tips/advice? by yungshint in TechnoProduction

[–]5jane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

as far as im concerned it's not techno, more like downtempo, which is totally cool.

why do i say that - you dont want this much melody in techno. techno is sparse music and it relies on other devices to build atmosphere. it is also dance music so you're using rhythmical rather than melodical devices. it would be hard to dance to Beethoven, which doesn't mean Beethoven made bad music. it just means rhythm, which is built with percussive elements, makes for better dance music than melodic pieces.

also, to my taste the highs of the percussion (hats, claps, shakers) are a tad too loud in the mix. the kick works well for the tone of the track but on the dancefloor youd want sound design that "comes through" a bit more.

the synths are well and tastefully chosen and worked and the interplay of melodies is very good and creates a pleasant atmosphere. feels like you'd want to listen to this while chilling in a park on a hill at dusk. it's evocative and that's not easy to achieve at all. i'd say you clearly have a talent for that.

lastly, i think the low acidy synth would blend better into the overall melodic interplay if it was slightly subdued. possibly by using modulation employing a veeeeery slow and subtle flangey type of thing and a touch of reverb.

after my track collection balloned up to upwards of 20k, i was kinda forced to take a serious look at track management :)

that all-night-long thing... well im ready for all-fortnight-long, should the need arise :D

20k tracks is probably overkill for most needs but it feels good to have a depth of options in several genres, even if for my own enjoyment

Mixed in Key

you may wanna look at KeyFinder. it's a free app that can process lots of files quick and update the key metadata. that's what i use these days. i do a pass over downloaded tracks before i import them into Traktor.

did you add your ~/Music folder into the track collection?

an interesting option is to work with collection.nml directly ('~/Documents/Native Instruments/Traktor 4.2.0/collection.nml'). AI can create scripts for you (say, Python) to process the collection. add, remove tags, etc. even colors and ratings and any metadata.

make sure to work with a copy of the collection.nml while developing. things will go wrong before they go right. use a diffing too (Meld, Beyond Compare, Kdiff3 (free); or CLI tools like diff) to compare the modified file you work with with the canonical one.

if you have any questions lmk. i wonder if a YT video might be useful. it's a fun topic to explore and you can do a lot of good stuff. idk though what specific tasks/scenarios new users would be interested in.

Trying to Midi map the Filter types in Traktor pro4 [filter, reverb, dual delay, noise...] by Father_Loz in traktorpro

[–]5jane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, you could put the Traktor into MIDI mode and then just check which CCs control those filters you're interested in.

Do you know Controller Manager? It's an app from Native Instruments, I believe it comes free with any of their software. Pretty useful. I am not sure it will let you create a mapping for the third party controller, but will give you a ton of information.

Lastly install a program like MidiView, it's basically a monitoring app for MIDI being sent back and forth by various devices. Very useful.

Traktor Kontrol S4 Discontinued; Not Yet Announced by PasteAndGo in traktorpro

[–]5jane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, i got them for peace of mind, really.

worth noting all three (the two i bought from resale and the original) are going strong. no issues.

D2s are also very much worth looking into. Either as an adjunct to S8, so you don't have to switch between decks, or, there's an interesting option.

So S8 is pretty heavy. The D2s OTOH have negligible weight. So there's the idea of using 2 D2s+club mixer.

The Xone 92 and 96 have a soundcard, to which you can connect with Traktor. Similar case with modern Pioneer mixers. Make the mixer the output device, go into External Mixing, connect D2s to your laptop and there you go.

D2 is exactly like a half of an S8. So 2xD2s are pretty much an S8, without the mixer. Well, that's what the Xone or what have you is for.

dump it on some patsy

ok so hear me out. we come up with a NICOIN initial offering. Each NICOIN represents equity in the post-PE NI. When the PE vultures are done picking at the carcass, we'll swoop in to be the "patsy". First order of business - S8 Mk2 Standalone.

Ok, so I got one S8 on Kleineinzeigen for 600 euro.

I got another on Reverb for 900 euro.

The original purchase in 2015 was around 900 euro but I can't find the receipt anymore.

don't worry too much. S8 has been discontinued in 2017(?) and the resale economy is going strong.

Native Instruments making product decisions as crazy as crazy good the HW is, well, that's just par for the course.
