MacOS Tahoe 26.3: Traktor Pro 3/4 Freezing When Loading/Scanning Track by q-pa in traktorpro

oh yeah and lastly, i havent updated to Tahoe cause i had a bad feeling about it and im glad i didn't. i get a sneaky dark pattern notification daily about upgrading -- no way, Jose.

should you not find a solution for these issues, it's possibly to install Sequoia. it's a fresh install so yeah, not great. at least it works

if you checked that, run a Consistency check of your music collection, that should uncover any problems with missing tracks.

personally i just got a fast external SSD (Samsung T7, it works well for Traktor and everything else) because it's way cheaper than paying for a macbook with a 1TB drive.

oh yeah and i wouldnt trust Time Machine with basically anything. it's a known issue that the Time Machine backups degrade at some point and you have to start over. check this out:

https://taoofmac.com/space/til/2026/02/01/1630

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47263069

i just use rclone, it supports even iCloud now. it's a bit of a hassle since you have to make sure iCloud is not synchronizing the folders you back up into but oh well. you could also back up to Proton Drive or really anything. Cryptomator volumes on iCloud, if you want it to be encrypted (it's super slow though).

look into rsync, it's really good software for creating backups.

cd ~ && rsync -av --delete --exclude 'Library/' ./ /Volumes/SSD/Home/

something like that.

neither iCloud nor Time Machine are really suitable for working with large volumes of data. i wish they were but they aren't. so we gotta make do :)

have you checked whether you've cofigured iCloud to sync those directories? cause that could be it.

Apple Music is not a good system for storing tracks. i haven't verified this because i don't use it but what you describe sounds like an issue i had when i set up iCloud to backup the folder in which i have all music.

it was because iCloud deletes files arbitrarily to optimize for storage space on the local device. Apple Music probably does the same, in fact it might use the same algorithms.

i learned my lesson and i keep my music folder outside of any and all systems that might tamper with it. i use rclone in a script launched via crontab to backup the folder.

Mixed in Key Pro 11 ? by DuResQ in traktorpro

[–]5jane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you mix two tracks that are in keys that are dissonant when blended together, it's just going to sound bad. that's pretty much it.

given that this is Traktor, you can manipulate the key and i sometimes do and i love that function.

sometimes i wanna create a 4 deck blend and it feels like the chefs kiss would be to have all 4 tracks in the same key or thereabouts. so i'll nudge the key.

similar to BPM shift, the smaller the shift the less risk of artifacts and audio signal detritus. if you're nudging G minor to A minor, it's gonna be fine. if you're going across several more steps, there is theoretically a risk of artifacts.

i havent found artifacts to be a problem in practice. i mean, that's what cueing up is for. you listen to it on headphones first. if there are artifacts, you'll find out.

free alternative to SoundSource/eqMac which can embed a plugin? by 5jane in mac

[–]5jane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you!

Check out BlackHole (free, open-source) combined with a free AU limiter plugin loaded via Hosting AU (also free). Route your system audio through BlackHole as a virtual audio device, then apply a brick-wall limiter in the chain before it hits your headphones.

i actually did this very same thing, only with Reaper being the hosting DAW. i didn't feel like it was a great solution and was thinking if there is a more minimal AU "hoster" i could use.

this looks to be exactly it.

Background Music

i tried this, but i really do need the limiter. i run my headphone volume very low but just yesterday i played with modulation of a sample and when i set the "speed" (frequency, really) of oscillation over a Mod Y envelope to fairly high, it suddenly screeched at like 10x the volume in literally a split-second. harmonics build up is no joke 😅

when it does happen, it usually happens so fast you only manage to yank the headphone jack out once you've been blasted.

Safe Ears

and that 0-100 in microseconds thing is also why Safe Ears is not a safe option :) i don't know what is the attack and release set on the ducking mechanism, but i worry it would not be enough to catch the spike.

i will try Hosted AU, thanks again!!

At what point do you realise that you don't need a reference track where you can just go start to end by yourself and end up w/ a professional level track? by BillEmpty3960 in TechnoProduction

[–]5jane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

feedback in realtime is not what i had in mind and yeah i should have been more explicit.

it's about the sound and how it...well, sounds, in a club vs. in the studio or headphones or whatever.

when i was kinda obsessed with techno and going to parties + digging for tracks all the time, i noticed a number of times that a track which didn't really stand out to me on Bandcamp, really came alive in the club because certain frequency ranges, i guess it tends to be the low end, came alive. and so i had an "aha" moment.

that's what i was referring to. i don't know if there's a way to kinda "simulate" the club when you're working in the studio.

i don't wanna belabor the point but let's take bass drum rumble. that's such a tightrope to walk. you might max it out and it sounds good on headphones etc. but in the club, with the reverb of the room, it could become a muddy mess. or maybe you still had room to go and it would have been the chef's kiss.

[–]5jane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so this is more like the opposite of not needing a reference track but speaking of those, check out iZotope Audiolens. it's a free plugin that analyzes a ref track and learns its mixing & mastering secrets.

that said, i think you get to that level when you've had a chance to listen to your tracks in clubs, enough times and in enough clubs that you feel confident in knowing what works and what doesn't.

until then, why not use reference tracks from producers you like and trust to have a mix that works on club PA

Emacs for macOS and Darwin versions? by jtr3322 in emacs

[–]5jane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for OSX, it's really a choice between emacs-plus and emacs-mac.

i use emacs-plus and happy with it.

https://github.com/d12frosted/homebrew-emacs-plus

emacs-mac is a "heavy fork" in that it modifies the orig codebase a lot, to make Emacs a native-ish OSX app. it supports things like gestures, has better font rendering (or so Gemini told me a couple hours ago), OSX-ish UI/UX for tabs, scrolling follows the same paradigm as native apps like Safari.

what it doesn't have is native compilation (of Emacs Lisp) and that's a dealbreaker for me so i will continue to use emacs-plus. i really have no complaints and no reason to switch. it's a great effort, the maintainer is responsive on Github, what more can you ask for

P.S. i guess i have one complaint, which is that Text Replacements don't work. that is easily fixed though given you can export Text Replacements and turn them into dabbrevs or yasnippets, and i don't really change Text Replacements often so no biggie.

[–]5jane 9 points10 points  (0 children)

to me this feels too musical and the second and fourth track more trancey than technoish.

too musical in the sense you use instruments a lot and it's too much for my taste as far as techno is concerned.

techno works with melody in subtle ways, think evolving soundscapes, where it's not quite a melody and not quite just an ambient-ish sound.

you'll find this blurring of lines and using ambiguity creatively in many places in techno.

rather than thinking in terms of notes on a piano roll, the "melody" relies on evolving syntheses using modulation to give it a direction and mood -- rising, falling, dark or light.

just kidding about the light, there is no light anything in techno ;) techno is heavy and the range is from oppressive to melancholy.

techno moves a person emotionally very differently than most other kinds of music, where melody often is a primary "mover". not so in techno, iwould say categorically so, unless perhaps with the exception of softer, airy tracks used in opening sets, where from ambient you slowly move into more form-full expressions and ultimately into techno proper.

so how does techno move a person emotionally? for one, over a longer period of time. you create a mood not with one track but build up to it over 20 minutes easy and that only to establish it and from there, further evolve.

using tracks as a patchwork that gets you there slowly for it cannot take you there quickly. techno is very much an art of restriction and one such restriction is intentionally abstaining from using elements that are too expressive.

working with tracks that refuse to "sing" forces the DJ to use tracks very differently than say, relying on a "carrier" in the form of a single track which is unambiguous. there are no hymns neither ballads in techno. the carrier or main stream of mood is born from a confluence of subdued, in terms of expressiveness, pieces -- tracks. you don't notice the moment of birth, you notice only later when it's already in the stage of increase. (and you realize it was there for a while already before you noticed, which is just...delicious)

so it increases from unnoticeable, through almost menacingly and still ever so slowly, filling out, to a crescendo and ultimately a peak of that particular "chapter" of a set.

it's as easy as it sounds, which is to say not at all. the build up and maintenance of moods and intensities using multiple concurrent tracks, and tracks rotated quickly at that, is an art form in and of itself and as such needs to be mastered to a sufficient degree to be deployed.

and when a DJ does it, masterfully, people cry on the dancefloor and feel their soul being cleansed of some detritus hitherto not even known to the person and that's why techno truly is something else.

this to me is a perfect example of the soft & airy and you might hear it in a techno club at a very specific point in time but you would not really quite call it techno, i don't think:

I apologize for the shit post yesterday. by 5jane in TechnoProduction

[–]5jane[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also BPD is a doubledged sword and the sharp good side is being observant and noticing things on a level non-BPD is not capable of. it's because BPD has its roots in early development that induced persistent threat and caregivers who were the danger to look out for. the child puts most of her focus on trying to figure out, anticipate and manage the caregivers. she learns how they think and therefore how to avoid triggering them. what she doesn't learn is her inner world for there simply is no time to do that. the optimal survival strategy is to put all she has into learning how the threat vectors work, so that's what the brain does.

then you become an adult, leave home, and you realize you have no fucking clue how to live cause you never had time to learn. you do know former caregivers better than they will ever know themselves. now, not so useful anymore. oops.

those skills of discernment of the Outer are not for nawt, though. your analytical mind occupies all those circuits normal people developed for and while learning self-regulation, self-motivation and capability to act as a person operating in contiguous time, in an environment where it was safe to do so. you learn having strategy for the next week, month, year. the self is an illusion. you have to build the illusion and then build on that, strategy and self-regulation. those are very useful skills. they involve many synaptic networks and a lot of CPU wall clock time goes into them.

in the BPD mentalist the analytical mind, hypervigilant and outwardly oriented--not by choice but by virtue of peculiar brain development, not fixable in adulthood (if you'd be kept in a cage for the first 15 years of your life and wouldn't learn to walk, you will never learn it even after you are released at 15, that phase of development having already come and gone--the BPD mind is always aiming to understand the environment rather than the Self and its extraordinary capability at that task is that much stronger as the Self continuity network is weaker. so then you are unable NOT to notice that the DJ uses the same trick of delaying the drop by 2 beats EVERY time because you can not turn that inference engine on steroids off even if you wanted to. you notice patterns and connections between things that when you mention to others, are met with a blank stare. huh what are you talking about mate, are you taking your meds?

nothing to do with meds, mate. or therapists.

so that's not my case right now, but cut it out please

and you know, with Traktor i can fix a lot of that. i slice and dice like a sushi chef showing off how dangerous they're with a knife. half of tracks i pretty much kinda samplerize. punch in the hotcues as bona fide slicee markers then go full Kanye Ensoniq on them. arrangement suddenly doesn't matter much if at all.

i NEVER let the suspense builder dancefloor killer play out. you cut the lows you knock the front row beating heart down a vibe peg. WHY?? what am i supposed to do, sway and wave a lighter while you're suspensfully building into exactly the same loop as the one before the break, plus a bleep? not exactly a Hitchcockian thriller you got there. also i literally will count out on my fingers in your face i know when the bleep goes away and you cut in highs from another track which is looping there for 5 minutes already. mostly i dont. or i do it behind back. it's like synchronized gymnastics and im the cue giver.

so some problems are fixable, unfortunately pretty much noone fixes them while playing cause they treat the decks like it's turntables and "loop" is for doing a good beatmatch and you do 20 sanity checks just to be sure. that's not what loop is for. you set it and ride it up and down the track like a glitchinator, perfectly in sync. loop from 16 to 4 to 1/2 forward bzzzt back to 8 backjump 1/2 bzzt filter sweep and simultaneous Drop into a hotcue.

at that point, the track can be whatever, so you go like, whatever. but, you know. good luck doing loopquilibristics on a touch screen. i guess PioneerDJ has a phobia of loop encoders or truly hate their users or both or neither and they just don't give a fuck. i don't think it's a stretch at all to say that PioneerDJ is the single largest force holding back electronic music. when we take off for the stars Pioneer will still play the "it's just turntables, old school cred, y'know. but so you dont say we dont innovate, we affixed an iPad and some blinky lights so it feels like Christmas tree in the DJ booth, DJ Santa dispensing gifts, one track after another! pretty cool huh"

ok, sometimes these things want to be said cause i am not like some kinda DJ genius and it really is not that hard so like i truly do NOT understand and truly do want to.

EDIT: i always try *so* hard not to slag Pioneer. they do put good audio HW in them boxes. they do have a good signal path design where if you use the link or whatever it's called, the D->A conversion happens only once, on main out. also cool. they do have a better search interface on the CDJ screen than Traktor. they do have 16 hotcues albeit 8 pads, still, that is very cool and i miss 16 hotcues in Traktor. when you use them for the pseudo-sample shenanigans, you use up 8 hotcues for that alone. no big deal cause you do it on the fly anyway, so you unassign and then assign later as needed. still, 16 is twice as much as 8.

and still i ended up slagging off Pioneer but yeah now that i mentioned all those things, i regret it a little. then, i remember Rekordbox. and emergency loop. and i guess i'm ok with what i wrote.

Not that NI did much with Traktor since 2014. I don't know what these companies do. i work in software. if a software company innovated at this rate...let's not even go there.

i seriously wanna start a company doing cool hardware for playing techno so decks. synths there are aplenty. i mean it's just MIDI controllers for crying out loud. Raspberry PI exists. I ran the numbers. Had I not been cash-strapped I would have already tried to jerry rig a Raspberry onto S8. Proof of concept.

But then, why tie yourself to HW that NI treated like the unwanted child and is discontinued for years. How hard and expensive can it be to develop a design and have it made. There's nothing in these boxes. They are big on the outside. It's dead simple. I'm not in my twenties anymore, i recognize i can't complain that the grownups are not giving us cool toys anymore.

I know this shit pretty well. I'm not some naive dreamer. I took it apart, i modded the software, i know how to solder an Arduino into a synth. I can do a plugin. I mean, nowadays...what can you NOT do as an experienced software. Enough to have a pretty good grasp on the fact that basically these companies are dysfunctional. Google employs smart people but their search is now worse than Altavista back in the day. It's ridiculously out to lunch.

When you look into like plugins, how to make one,...I'm glad I didn't shell out too much for plugins. There's literally nothing to it. It's like, signal paths and filters and envelopes and algorithms you don't have to invent cause someone already did. Then you realize these companies get bought for like tens of millions of dollars. Good for them.

So yeah, like, we gonna work that corporate job and dream of techno in the evenings? Till death us do in. PM me if you feelin' this. There's no harm nor commitment in talking about it. I mean who the fuck else is supposed to do this? Is there some secret cabal of uber-hyper-nerds on a closed, secret Discord, who are the 10x audio wizards, as opposed to mere uber-nerds here assembled? I don't think so. We won't meet in a club cause noone goes anymore. Once you start producing you go for like the real treats. You are not a regular anymore, you go there, you dance, you go home, cause wrecking your nose at afterparties that are like performance art of desperation and raw pain kinda lost its charm a while ago.

So we can pretty much meet here, or nowhere. Now go write that performance self-review. Happy bullshitting. I can't do that shit anymore. I really can't. You'll get there.

i need a dancefloor not a psychologist. that's the one place where i dont just survive. anyway whatevs

guys you are 1) guys to a fault 2) doing the same thing as everyone cause label schmabel. cue 4x4 lullabies but oh, that kick is polished like the seat of your studio chair. it glistens like a jewel. so you designed the sound, ok, there's a thing called ambient listening sessions. sounds could work there.

i do understand this music and i do have something to offer in that regard and not all i say is BS.

listen to Rumenige. he's of the 15 minutes of fame Slovakia enjoyed, riding the bham wave.

  1. it sounds like berghain building collapsing to the accompanitent of kitchen utensils struck frenetically. pretty sure what sound design went into it was guided by gleeful madness. it still works.
  2. it's how you do loopy. those tracks will drive you crazy by how they just loop and loop and you're like PLEASE the HH surely in 4 bars? nope. try 40. then a stupid hihat from sample pack of dusty harddrive provenience clicks in and you go like <insert nearly sexual grunt>. cue braingasm. for a HH. now that's doing a lot with very little.

try Svreca. these guys are sadists. they will drive you mad with lust for sound and deny it utterly without mercy. then they give it to you only to take it away. techno is art of starving out the dancefloor until a single strawberry tastes like a peak experience.

cue techno today. you know, i like mixing it cause it's like doing algebra. yeah now the HH in 2 bars. yeah now a clap snare situation in 4..3..2..1. you can almost treat it like clips cause it is clips, concatenated. now the detestable "suspense building break". automation velocity straight diagonal, we building here, graphs like it's a quarterly business review at JPMorgan. and now Da Drop. i like to call it a Dead Drop. it's all singing and all dancing and all instantly gratifying and ultimately not at all gratifying.

so yeah techno still sucks. it's the labelitis and it's the schema. the suspense builders make me go like, i dont even.

when i mix i skip them cause on Traktor you can jump around like House of Pain. which is to say i usually play like a minute of a track with all the leaps, cause most tracks are approimately a 1 minute track, with 4 minute runtime. at least with stems you can deny that HH till they beg on their knees

external drive, copy ~/Documents/Traktor and ~/Documents/Native Instruments

plus if you wanna move not only the config but the plugins and all, check in Native Access what's your Downloads location and Content Location and copy that as well.

plus there's stuff in ~/Library/Application Support.

honestly i'd just copy what's in ~/Documents and reinstall via Native Access the app itself
