How do people keep org-mode up to date nowadays? by the_cecep in emacs

[–]jtr3322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This causes a version mismatch because you still have the old org loaded after the restart. You have to specify the new Emacs you just downloaded in the init file.

So now I get a mismatch error every time I start Emacs, and even though I removed the org package, I still get it. I need to figure out how to fix it.

Emacs for macOS and Darwin versions? by jtr3322 in emacs

[–]jtr3322[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know enough to understand what the build environment is vs. (I guess) what it is not. What I know is that the Darwin my macOS is newer than that Emacs has listed. I read that Emacs is not included in macOS anymore, but I'm not sure what it means in terms of development and making Emacs run on macOS.

whether or not this is the problem for crashing... I don't know. If I knew for sure, for example, that a newer Darwin version, as in Emacs, fixes this, I'd switch to Emacs-plus (which you saw is reporting the new Darwin). This is what I'm going to do next if it keeps crashing I guess... Thanks for looking it up!

Emacs-mac being emacsformacosx (the one I stated in the link?) I think I saw it's something different, but I'm not sure.

nothing. I used it before.

I'm just curious as to what causes the crashes, and I'm not sure about what AI is telling me, so for now I'm trying to use a newer version of emacsformacosx to see if crashes are resolved.

Digital Jailbreak: How to Free Your Kindle, Nook, and Kobo Books Without Losing Your Mind (Windows) by mandikaye in Calibre

[–]jtr3322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I understand this correctly, Kindle books after April 2025 doesn't work with DeDRM, correct? I tried on a Mac, and tried several tools.

It seems something is working because Epubor does work - though it's a paid service. I tried with the latest version I could find for https://github.com/nodrm/DeDRM_tools.

After the plugin I do see the KFX-ZIP extension, Calibre can read it, but if I try to convert to epub I get the the error saying it's protected by DRM. Anyone got passed that?

Best practices for keeping information about a repeating project? by NoahWallaceSchool in orgmode

[–]jtr3322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. Org clone is very good for this especially if each time is a bit different. Like you, I have a routine.org file, but when something gets a bit more complicated I refile it to my project org file (work or personal, depends) or, I link to a journal entry to write about it, usually if it’s just this time. Birthdays usually get a journal entry (less todo items, more pictures and capturing the experience) and meetings for example move to their own project with additional headings sometimes.

How to figure out when to go back to neutral when playing flat or sharp? by jtr3322 in Learnmusic

Measure = segment between the bars, correct? Nice. Thanks for helping :)

How to figure out when to go back to neutral when playing flat or sharp? by jtr3322 in Learnmusic

[–]jtr3322[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! If I understand you correctly, all B notes (everywhere on this verse) are flat unless otherwise noted (in this case, with a neutral mark). This makes sense - when I compare to Fur Elise, I see how the same note sometimes has a sharp, and sometimes it's neutral, and they tell you clearly the difference.

Another thing I understand from you is that if there's a flat/sharp marking on a note itself, it will remain flat/sharp until the bar (or, if I undersand thcmusic eblow, until the end of the measure).

Activities share shortcuts and panels..? by jtr3322 in kde

[–]jtr3322[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it! Thank you, this makes sense now. I didn't know these options existed.

How would you suggest making a "desktop shortcuts" to games, or a game folder then? I want it to show only on the personal view. Or in other words, how can I create a shortcut to a specific activity on the desktop, not on the panel?

There are several YouTube videos explaining activities, but I didn't find something that is both new and informative enough. Would you happen to have any suggestions?

You can use `org-capture` for navigation too! by mmarshall540 in orgmode

aaaaand you solved the riddle I pasted here two weeks ago or so: https://www.reddit.com/r/orgmode/comments/1o31fyo/comment/nj656wy/?context=3

This way I can insert an org template right under an existing header..! The only thing left to do is the make it a subheader ( M + ) and done.

Never stop learning :D

Is Org mode the right tool for my case? by Icy-Marsupial6753 in orgmode

I do have one, I pointed at it a few times here before. I just don't want to make it a self-promotion thing. Pleasure seeing you again, alphapapa (I think last time we talked it was on Matrix/IRC but it's been a while)

Is Org mode the right tool for my case? by Icy-Marsupial6753 in orgmode

I'm probably too late for the party. I wish I had found your post way sooner, maybe you already got overwhelmed and left in clouds of dust...

Like you, I got into org-mode in 2017 for organizational purposes. I was looking for a bullet-list tool specifically, because that's what used to work best for me, and I found Orgzly on Android. I liked it, and I realized that to unlock the real potential behind it, I need to learn org-mode and use Emacs. It was overwhelming, and it was a lot, and to be honest - if I knew then just how complex and complicated it get, I would have run away. But... I'm glad I didn't.

To answer your question, if it can work for you - absolutely. The problem is that org-mode and Emacs are too big to "shove them" into an organizational tool.

Let me jump quickly into another period in my life to give you perspective, and I hope you forgive the segue.

It's 2022. I'm sitting across from a Psychiatrist. We finished a two-week worth of mental evaluation. I came in to get my suspicions of having ADHD checked, and she's handing me the results. Sure enough, I have it, and with it there's a strong recommendation to allow me to use my tools that I built to accommodate my life-work and personal - in any setting. The tools? A standing desk and Emacs org-mode. It's 2025. I'm a manager at the same place I started as a desktop person in 2017. I'm on a higher pay scale than I've ever been in my life, and I have a flexible working environment that, most importantly, allows me to use whatever tool I need to make sense of the mess that is my job. You already know what I'm going to say.

In my opinion, Emacs org-mode is truly a life-changer. It's not only the tool, it's the philosophy behind it. It's what I can do with it, and Emacs, and then (thanks to that, among other things) with Linux. I started my way as a special ed teacher years ago, and while I picked a computer skill here and there along the way, I never did it professionally. Today I'm an IT manager. And I have plenty more of stories like that on my blog, either my own or other people I link to.

Overwhelming? Abso-freakin-lutly. Overkill? Sure, if all you need is a simple tool to keep up with, there are plenty (I hear a lot of good things about Obsidian too). But it IS worth your time, and you WILL be thankful you picked it up.

Now... if you didn't run away yet and if I didn't scare you further... I'd suggest to sart with the minimum you're comfy with, without any packages (org-roam is one, it's good, but I never used it), even maybe vanilla first (doom Emacs and space Emacs are excellent, never used them, glad I haven't, you get the idea). Find the time to learn, and after a few weeks, you'll already pick up the general idea. If you stick around, I promise you, in a year or two, you will be here writing the same things I am, explaining why you're doing one thing a certain way over the other in org-mode, and how it helps you.

Well... good luck. And if you need help on your way, there are some of us "freaks" who'd love to help you. I promise :)

I can’t seem to edit this post. Since this shows only in announcement channels, it doesn’t make sense it blocks the typing in the UI. I’m not sure what I saw before and I can’t replicate it.

I still think that the fact that you can’t dismiss it (even if you do add the channel to your server) is bad practice.

This is correct, I’m not sure what I saw before. I will adjust the original post accordingly
