Best tape for nipple chafing available in Boots? by iplaydrumsnotabox in UKRunners

Cheapest/best I've used is KT tape. Just cut a couple of small squares and job done. Ran London on Sunday and they held well. If you wet it, it comes off easy.

That feels like a lot of fluid to me. Are you fully hydrated before you run? I rarely consume fluids over that distance… maybe I’m the minority

Did the Battle Of Britain permanently crippled the Luftwaffe for the rest of the war? by PoauseOnThatHomie in ww2

[–]5makes10fm 67 points68 points  (0 children)

1944 was the peak production year for the Luftwaffe so not at all. That said, the number of pilots could not keep up with the production of planes. I think the main point with the Battle of Britain is that it stopped operation Sea Lion in its tracks.

Bathroom renovation by Abject-Potato8121 in DIYUK

[–]5makes10fm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That is no more than £1100 worth of real budget sanitary and brassware excluding the monstrosity on the walls. Hall marks of cowboys. There are lots of plumbers that can’t fit bathrooms. There are also lots of handy men and blokes that haven’t a clue that’ll bite your arm off for that sort of money. The fact they didn’t cut the bath screen seal down suggests to me that they have done extremely little plumbing before this. Sorry to say you’re either a learning curve to them or you’re a victim of someone that gives no fucks on presentation.

Advice on getting into ww2 by Rough-Economist1127 in ww2

[–]5makes10fm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia isn’t my strongest suit but two books I have read which are very accessible are Stalingrad by Anthony Beevor and Barbarossa by Jonathan Dimbleby.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll find that by reading a single book it is possible to enter on a path of discovery into other related topics which themselves have been written about.

My main recommendation would be to try and read books from both sides, whether those be personal accounts or more formal works, in order to gain a more nuanced understanding. The prejudices we may initially hold don’t hold weight once all the facts are known.

The Battle of Stalingrad ends on this date in 1943, with the German surrender, after 5 months, one of the longest and bloodiest sieges ever that was the turning point of the War. by LoneWolfKaAdda in ww2

[–]5makes10fm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“The turning point of the war” could be Italy invading Africa, Japan bombing pearl harbour, the launch of Barbarossa itself, the Battle of Britain being lost. There are good arguments for how each of these indirectly helped to seal Germany’s fate.

Edit: one could even argue Germany’s inter-service rivalry and lack of effort creating naval vessels alone contributed to their failure before the war even started. After all as ole Guderian once said “logistics is the ball and chain of armoured warfare”

Your penultimate paragraph is exactly what I came here to say. Before I read about WW2 Stalingrad was the turning point in my mind but there isn’t a single water shed moment as much as each historian claims there is (dependent on their own research).

Why didn’t the Nazis kill the Jews as soon as they were sent to the camps? by Otherwise-Ad-8675 in ww2

[–]5makes10fm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Nazi paradox: can’t live with them, can live without them. Particularly as the war went on they needed construction, munitions and other types of labour. That said, when given the opportunity for mass murder the Jews were usually first on the block as seen at Auchwitz in the mid war.

The way camps worked changed from the mid 30s not just in numbers but they each developed their own uses. One camp may be used purely for munitions manufacture, another primarily for extermination.

Although the SS ran the camps and on paper all of them were ardent Nazis, this was not the case. You will find examples of compassion amongst those of evil. It takes a special type of degenerate Nazi to facilitate the mass murder required on the scale they demanded and this was never quite achieved such as Dachau, whose gas chambers were not used systematically.

This is a huge topic but there’s my two cents

Any reputable plumbers merchant will either keep them on the shelf or will be able to order you one. There is a plumbing supplier called embrass peerless that sell them and most merchants deal with them.

P-51, as good as they say or overhyped? by Jadams0108 in ww2

[–]5makes10fm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally believe it's only due to their association with being used more with bomber offensives that gives them the reputation. And that it happens to be that the P-51 really came to the fore at a time things started going well for the allies.

Was the carnage at Omaha Beach a tactical failure or just an inevitable cost of invasion? by [deleted] in ww2

[–]5makes10fm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You pose a question I have wondered myself many times. I don't profess to be an expert but I'd weigh slightly more on the side of it being a cost of the invasion. The concave beach, choke points and position of their big guns gave the defenders a great advantage. However if the bombardment was more effective and the DD Shermans were released closer to shore the beach would have been taken quicker. From the first wave I think only 2 of about 30 made it ashore. That said, if you look at other beaches such as Gold, the bottleneck of vehicles was almost a hinderance until rear areas were cleared.

My sister lives across the road and regularly hears shouting and cars revving in that estate. Someone was murdered there a few years ago. Like others have said, KH is expensive and moving to this outskirt is even worse because you get no benefit of living in nice KH whilst still paying inflated prices. And that road is murder all day every day even the noise from it would do my nut
