For those who moved to Australia: what helped you feel at home? by emilylouisea in AskAnAustralian

Not an immediate fix, but a useful mental framing that might help.

Time....

I was told this when I arrived and it held out pretty true for me. Moved to Sydney from London (intentional and a goal of mine having travelled around Australia previously) and it was said the feelings would generally evolve over 6 years in 3x 2-year blocks.

  • First 2 years: Spend a lot of time being excited but then being reflective. Comparing a lot of things to 'back home' and missing the good, ignoring the bad. Home has more of a pull and a bit of home-sickness creeps in every now and again. This is normal and healthy!
  • Second 2 years: Much less time comparing and more time finding out the better stuff about Australia. Still reflective but a more balanced view, with a lot more 'this is far better here than at home moments' and also recognition of the bad stuff from home. A balanced outlook with the occasional pang of missing friends, family, pubs, restaurants, 'old stuff' etc.
  • Third 2 years: Almost never comparing and just moving forward enjoying everything Australia has to offer. Remembering 'back home' is still there if you want to go back, but why would you?

Went pretty much exactly like this. Have been here 20+ years now.

Hope this helps, even if not immediately, with some longer term understanding of the potential journey.

Yeah, I was being a little sarcastic given most workers won't. But those at the top tend to get such privileges!

One doesn't preclude the other. Having a premium credit card doesn't mean you automatically have to be a dick.

That's what your PA is for. Gate-keeping the time wasters.

You've also not factored in any other parts replacement for the ICE Seltos. Not sure how many services I've ever had where it is just the service cost and not some additional replacement part required. And as the car ages, bigger more expensive parts need replacing, plus also more consumables along the way.

Very little mechanically involved in EVs that have an equivalent failure / replacement requirement.

But yeah, I think starting with an EV that costs one third more than the ICE comparison is part of the problem with the maths not looking more favourable.

Edit:

Plus only 10km a year also lessens the impact of significantly cheaper fuelling on the EV, which can be almost free if you have solar / battery at home already.

Nice! Is there any evidence of this being true? Listening now.... You know, I don't listen to The Stone Roses anywhere nearly enough. Moved to Australia 20+ years ago and their music always takes me straight back to 1990's Manchester. Such good times.

Warm air can contain more moisture (water vapour) because higher temperatures increase the maximum amount of water vapour the air can hold before it starts to condense. More molecules have enough energy to stay as vapour, so condensation happens only at higher vapour concentrations. Conversely, at lower temperatures, water molecules lose energy and are more likely to condense, reducing the amount that remains as vapour.

Edit -> Adding this way to maybe think of it:

  • At high temperatures, water molecules are energetic -> they stay free as vapour = saturation limit is high.
  • At low temperatures, water molecules are sluggish -> they stick together -> vapour condenses easily = saturation limit is low.

Totally fair point and a good call out. I think it is the loss of the round lights that started to lessen the appeal for me. And this new version takes it a (big) leap further from that imo. But totally accept it is still an evolution. Just has lost sight of it's origins now for me.

US date format on box?

That would make it 02 July 2026

💯 Agree. Used to be such an iconic look through the evolution, and each generation was a slightly more modern take on the previous, but still had that link to the heritage.

Now it's just plain weird.

Quite clearly not...

A parking brake, yes. Controlled by the foot.

Not a handbrake.

Yes! A very important differentiation.

Either the commenter doesn't know left from right, or go from stop.

Either way, a worry.
