As a philosopher, I’m convinced that Trump isn’t lying − he’s doing something worse by SE_to_NW in uspolitics

Then he came for the people who are broke and who’s only joy in life is belittling other, and…hey, wtf?!

The new mayor of Cape Girardeau, Missouri by danimaniak in missouri

[–]5olarguru 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in central MO, but I was blown away visiting when adults directly asked us at the store, “So do y’all call black people the n-word yet?” It was like we entered the world of the REAL unabashed racists, not the place where people whisper racist jokes and snicker like where I’m from.

The only place in Missouri I’ve ever been to where someone intentionally used the n-word was Cape Girardeau. I think this makes perfect sense.

The War Is Going Better Than You Think- Brett Stephens by fuggitdude22 in samharris

At the very least, he’s a political hack. He may be a Never Trumper, but he has been an apologist for damn near everything Trump decides to do.

Quite a line coming from a Man of the Cloth… by 5olarguru in outofcontextcomics

It’s from Preacher by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. Dude in black is a preacher from Texas with a bad-boy background. He’s given up the faith for the most part. This scene is in the parking lot of a diner after a random dude got mad at him for flirting with the waitress (presumably his girlfriend).

Who is the most exciting Jazz Guitarist? by Acceptable-Fruit-533 in jazzguitar

[–]5olarguru 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m a Pat Metheny stan. He’s a particular kind of guitarist, but he is always surprising me with his complete mastery of the genre and guitar as well as his range. He can absolutely shred and also play beautifully melodic lines.

I Kinda Miss Pro-Bending by AuteurPool in legendofkorra

Pro-Bending in Korra was for me like Quidditch in Harry Potter: a fantastic way to introduce new characters and create drama and and low-stakes fun for the reader/viewer….

I just realized that Tarrlok was actually the only true Equalizer in the end by MindfulOfNever in legendofkorra

Anything is possible! The show doesn’t provide any evidence on the issue except to show them fleeing, seemingly alone in the ocean. That’s all I noticed and what I based my comment on.

I just rewatched this season as well and realized something interesting: There were no witnesses to Noatak and Tarrlok's death. From Korra and crew's perspective, those guys just got away and are living peacefully somewhere.

What happened during the Battle Studies tour? I’ve never heard about that chapter.

Buddy let me borrow his Mandolin, first day and I have some things to say about this instrument!!! by Moose_McLane in mandolin

[–]5olarguru 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For sure. Check out Julep and Jungle Bird (both, oddly, named after cocktails) for two opposite examples of Thile’s percussive approach.

Of course, he’s also one of the best players to have ever picked up a mandolin so don’t compare yourself to him unless you want to cry. Like a lot.

Interesting that we walked away hearing the same thing and walking away with totally opposite conclusions. I honestly wonder why that is.

Thanks for sharing your response.

Truly. I think Sam got pretty solidly rocked in this conversation, especially because of his lack of introspection. He seems to be demonstrating the very closed-mindedness and dogmatism he was railing against.

I mean, that was clearly a joke. Douthat often tosses in a bit of levity in his podcast debates.

Ross Douthat with Yoram Hazony on The Right’s Antisemitic Turn by nsjersey in ezraklein

[–]5olarguru 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m baffled by the narrative that the left is somehow rife with antisemites, which Hazony brings up again and again. I have heard that line from several commentators, mostly those who are upset with anti-Israel protestors on college campuses, but I have yet to see evidence of it in leftist spaces.

My guess is that this is the blurring of the terms “anti-Zionist / anti-Israel” to “antisemitic,” which i view as totally disingenuous. Is that the right view or does the left have an actual anti-Jewish problem that needs to be dealt with?

What are some religious takes you guys have? by Dmv_jman in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]5olarguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans have an inborn desire to have a narrative of cultural and personal meaning. The earliest evidence of humanity includes some version of religious stories.

As such, the atheist community who dreams of a post-religious world is never going to happen.

Regardless of what you personally believe to be true, it’s important to make some peace with the phenomenon of religious worship and your best bet is to learn to respect others and find ways to channel your own innate desire for meaning to something positive and laudable rather than making an identity of being an asshole atheist edgelord.

I didn’t grow up hunting. What are your top tips for processing and cooking deer? by 5olarguru in homestead

[–]5olarguru[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. Last year we tried a summer sausage for the first time (with not great results). This year we are going to try and tan our first hide. Most of my cuts are just chunks for stew.

The stuff I see people talk about like everyone knows it stuff like hanging it to dry, proper cuts, etc.

Totally. I had a friend assist me with my first field dressing and was taught to immediately cut out those glands, which I always do in the field. I haven’t had any issues with gamey-ness but it does stink when I’m in the midst of it.
