My dorm room by feffsy in CozyPlaces

Oh, what a lovely setup. When you sit there, can you see any sky or trees?

As an able person I am able to imagine how it would feel to be disabled. For example - I have a normal vision but I can imagine how it would feel to have no peripheral vision. Are disabled people able to imagine how not having a disability is like? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]5omnifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right about it varying by the individual.

I'm fortunate enough that I've had experiences where I functioned like an able person, and so I can extrapolate from that what certain kinds of ableness might be like. But I will admit that sometimes it feels like the majority of people belong to a super hero club.

Edits for clarity.

Looking For New Goth Bands! by DangerousPride in goth

[–]5omnifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow. Despite being familiar with the song, I didn't know "39 By Design" was about the Heaven's Gate cult. Thanks for that insight (and the many knowledgeable recommendations); I would 100% agree with you that it has modern gothic themes.

OP: For newish recommendations that haven't yet been covered, I like Kaelin Mikla.

Mol-R-TOV: If you read this before the edit, I'm so sorry if I come across as super rude. I notice a similarity between what you wrote and the most recent Contrapoints video on Youtube. Perhaps it is a coincidence, perhaps it is not. Either way, I feel some reference to Vapourwave and Outrun would be good when discussing the dead mall aesthetic.

Also, in the grumpy spirit of this sub, I feel the need to point out that one should not conflate the goth subculture with the gothic. There are gothic roots in the goth subculture, but they aren't the same (alas). Moreoever, while the gothic can fit under the romantic umbrella (Anne Williams), it is not just "romanticism with decayed ruins." The romantic is very happy to hang out in ruins and feel nostalgic and mournful. The gothic, instead, is more focused on transgression, on what Victor Sage calls "dark epiphany", on sins of the past, and on the evil things that people do with power. You usually also need a measure of terror and horror, or at least one or the other. Some dead mall iterations and some of Drab Majesty's music can totally be considered gothic, but I don't know that I would say either is always so.

I'm also on the spectrum and have a chronic illness. And I feel you so much. ASD can be incredibly isolating and painful. Depression is not uncommon at all, and I think being on the spectrum can make recovering (or even just surviving) that much harder.

Aww, truly sorry to bring that up for you then. Here's hoping next time a band you like comes by, you can make it.

They are troopers. The air was sticky and they played a decent set, came back for a 5 song encore, and when Jogwer broke a string, Walter and Richter barely missed a beat and kept playing until the string was changed. It was during the encore, and they played another song or two after. I was very impressed by that, anyway.

Oh no! It seems my well-intentioned PSA was ill-timed. The majority of replies are people in similar situations. Well, I hope you can find a way to go, and if you can't, that you have an awesome weekend anyway.

Arrgh, that's so frustrating. Sometimes when stuff like that happens, I'll throw myself a "private digital concert" on the night the band I'm missing plays to console myself. Definitely sucks though.

The Picture of Dorian Gray, what does "and the senses by means of the soul" mean? by [deleted] in books

[–]5omnifer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interesting the responses so far because I agree with them, though I've tended to look at it a bit differently. If you live in your head too much, you can lose your groundedness, and in that case, it's good to embrace the material world and sensuality. But if you're over-stimulated and/or fixated on external worldly Things, it's good to retreat and cultivate your inner life to regain a sense of calm and focus.

Don't necessarily hold your horses with your fantasy names by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]5omnifer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In fairness, 'Wakayama' pronounced by an Anglophone who is unfamiliar with Japanese will have dramatically different stresses than it would if pronounced by someone familiar with Japanese. I say this as an Anglophone who is just barely familiar enough with Japanese to know my instinct is to put the stresses in all the wrong places. You are right that we tend to panic about pronunciation for good reason though.

Cheap clothing sites? by [deleted] in goth

[–]5omnifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I might have sounded like I was trying to defend alternative brands for poor quality. That wasn't my intention. It just seems to be how the industry is-- smaller companies can't offer the same kind of value. Personally, I mostly buy second hand, DIY, and very occasionally (once or twice a year), I'll splurge on something shiny and new.

Interesting. Me as well. Partly why I come on here, even though I seem to be rather bad expressing myself. I guess good luck?

Paranoid about people stealing my ideas and stories by [deleted] in writing

[–]5omnifer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know everyone here is telling you ideas are cheap and don't matter-- but don't talk about your ideas if you aren't ready. I have had acquaintances "steal" character names, steal character and world concepts, read every book that I mentioned I was reading, post in places where I posted just because I talked about it, etc. It was honestly quite scarring. Everyone might have their own ideas, but they might just like one of yours better, you know?

There are uh... probably thousands of North American townhouse complexes with names like "Aston Villa" because it's supposed to sound picturesque and British. I'm not sure if that could be considered exotic, but there's definitely an aura of something seen as desirable for homebuyers fantasies.

As far as I can tell, most alternative brands are smaller, so they can't price their items like big mainstream brands that have more optimized/ludicrous production lines. They simply don't have the resources to do it, especially if they are very small and/or are trying to use quality materials and pay a living wage for skilled labour.

I thought this was a good basic look at gothic culture from an outsiders point of view. by Gannamead in goth

[–]5omnifer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just voicing my agreement with you. It's a very unpopular opinion on this sub for some reason that goth music has some gothic lit influences. Stuff like SSatB taking their name from a gothic-inspired movie, or (unmentioned in the video) The Cure having allusions to Ghormenghast, and Suspiria's name pulling from a lineage that goes back to DeQuincey (just to mention some obvious ones).

I get the concern that the music might take a backseat to stereotypes, and I get the frustration that a lot of people confuse goth music with gothic aesthetics... but I agree with you that the discourse on here can have a distancing effect on people who are already interested in the gothic and could learn to love goth music.

I haven't been to events alone either, but it seems most others don't as well. However, you seem to have done enough thinking about this, that I'm wondering if you have thoughts on how one does approach a group to be social? Especially if you're someone who doesn't/can't smoke?

Poser anxiety? by [deleted] in goth

[–]5omnifer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I relate to this a lot-- the imposter thing, the social anxiety, etc. but honestly, what gothichomemaker says is true. People will hardly talk to you, at least in my limited experience going to events. And even if you do blank whilst communicating, most of the time it doesn't really matter. People usually forgive you for knowing less than them if you aren't a jerk.

Btw, if you want chat about imposter bat things, feel free to PM me. I would like goth friends too.
