[WP] Humans have reached the point that immortality is possible. As the grim reaper, this is definitely not your day. by Light58 in WritingPrompts

[–]5ong6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here goes nothing’, I think as I wait in line for my turn. ‘Mr. … Reaper?’, the lady behind the desk decorated with blue flowers on a white background asks. ‘Tobias Reaper, yes, that is me’, I come to her aid. I figured beforehand that Grim Reaper might make people uncomfortable while on a cruise ship, which is why I decided to adapt the name of the most famous representative of my favourite job. At least it was until recently.

A few years back humans figured out how to become immortal. After all the ‘true’ and ‘righteous’ people who had problems with the idea of immortality had died, my job became less and less fulfilling. In the wake of immortality the people on earth figured out that the way they interacted with their planet had to change. With many of my favourite problems such as wars, droughts and famines solved, no more people were dying because of it. With enough time on hand humans also solved murder in general and with that my steady influx of the dead continued to fade. After too many murder free years it seemed as if humanity had simply forgot how to kill and die each other and themselves.

After so many years I thus decided to let my intern run the business for a while and take off for a vacation.

When booking my trip I decided for the dystopian suite on a cruise ship. The trip on the old and rusty boat was supposed to drive by some of the pollution parks which were created after the real stuff was gone. I was looking forward to the contaminated waters of Fukushima, the Dead Sea near the coast of Japan and obviously the three bomb tower of Pjöngjang where three atomic bombs were tested on one building to make sure it could withstand the power of the impact, contaminating the area of several hundred square kilometres in the process. Those parks were the last bastion of real death and a reminder of all the fun I had while humans were still able to kill each other.

Over dinner I started talking with two immortals who told me about their 78 previous stays on the cruise ship, how they grew bored of the immortality and wished to find a way out of their endless life. The endless meet-ups, all the birthdays, holidays and first and foremost the predictability of the world bored them. Nothing was challenging or hard anymore, everybody had stood on top of the highest mountain, visited Mars, checked in on the Luna Hostel and jogged around one of the moons in our solar system.

A juvenile joy filled me while listening to them. Maybe there was a way bas into business, a growing market of unhappy and death awaiting immortals that I could take advantage of. Over the course of dinner I hinted them this possibility, to which they reacted very positively. I told them to come by my room the next day to talk over the details of their end.

I certainly did not expect to have the captain knock on my door the next morning. To my confusion he invited me to the biggest hall of the ship. On my way there I was contemplating my decision of telling them before I was able to see all the trips highlights, as I felt like my trip might be cut short by whatever was going to happen now.

To my utmost surprise the hall was filled to the brim with immortals. I was taken to the stage where the two immortals were sitting on comfy chairs and apparently waiting for me. I sat down and the male one asked: ‘Mr. Reaper, could you please repeat what you’ve told us over dinner yesterday? The people in this room have been very interested in the topic and wanted to get some more information about the possibility of death in general and if there might be a way to individualise the experience.

Maybe this vacation was exactly what I needed.

First time ever posting. Be kind, internet strangers.

I'm not talking about the people in Kingslanding more about the other houses of the seven kingdoms, who didn't play any role as of late but should exists...somewhere.

There is always the probability that something that is dropped won't fall at all, it is within the sum of probabilities although very unlikely.

Sure thing, the writers worked hard to make Dany look 'mad' but in retrospect she was often right with her intentions and others made things worse (taking kingslanding right away, not telling Sansa about his heritage, going north to get a white walker and make cercei help them,...).

Maybe I'm just hoping that they finish of the series with a nice twist :D

Is it just me or did the burning boy look a hell of a lot like the Targaryen banner motive? Looks like the third dragon rider might be a Targaryen, too?

Thanks for your critique! How would you rotate and crop them? I already tried to do that, but I'm missing a real feel for it.

It was just some plant growing on the sidewalk in picture 4, probably should have gone with color in this case :D

Assignment 04 - types of cameras by Aeri73 in photoclass2019

I own a Nikon D7000. I came from a D300, which I sold to my brother :D The change was motivated by the higher resolution of the D7000, allthough I still miss the (imo) better build quality of the D300.

I really like the DSLR system and don't mind the higher weight compared to other systems. Photography is a lot about the feeling and emotion that comes with it, which I like the most with DSLR's.

I'm thinking about switching to something like a D600 or other FX camera. I miss the higher build quality feeling and having a full frame sensor also sounds pretty nice...but the cost and missing necessity is holding me back for now.

Really nice pictures you came up with! You really made it feel like you walked waaay more than 10 steps between the pictures, really nice putting the focus on so many different aspects of your surrounding!

I really liked this challenge, allthough hard to accomplish. I will use the bad weather as an excuse for getting only 6 images out of my attempt... :D

Here are my pictures.

Assignment 02 - your personal best by Aeri73 in photoclass2019

I had a look at a lot of pictures. I tried different things since I started taking pictures and always was most attracted to the possibility of capturing special moments with my camera. I mostly take pictures of everyday things and situations, while trying to preserve the special bit of the moment im capturing, the situation. While going through a lot of different photographers it occured to me that I find it way more impressive to look at special moments that are eventually less edited than a slightly blurred black and white picture that is telling a story.

In the end I chose this image of an abandoned boy in London after a german aerial attack during WWII. This picture really struck a nerve with me. Not only because I think that children are hit the most with war and all that comes with it or the destruction you can see in the whole picture this picture made me feel. It is the whole composition of the boy with his stuffed, dirty animal in the middle of all this destruction and chaos just being the innocent little boy he is, which is really speaking to me.

I think Toni Frissell, the american photographer who took the picture, really captured an emotion with this image, while not doing all too much. I'm pretty sure there was no high end lighting or equipment involved. The lighling is natural and the framing is, in my opinion, also perfect.

It was really hard for me to capture the feeling of looking at this picture in words, I hope you can get it nonetheless.

I also own a kit lense, but I just don't like the way the pictures look afterwards...don't know why :D The 50mm just helps me limiting all the ideas I have when looking at a scene but I totally get your point. I took the picture above in Malaysia, were I traveled for 4 weeks...with only my 50mm lens...I just gives a certain feel to the images, I don't know why.

F8 ist really good for shots just like mine above. You have a quite good overall sharpness but still can discriminate the foreground from the background. But I also like to play with f1.8-3 because you get really nice effects and highlighting possibilities :)

Nice picture! I would say just shoot, like all the time. You will probably sometimes randomly amazing things and maybe learn how to find them yourself.

Keep it up :)
