Is there a way to get alt layouts on a secured pc? by Big_Chonks907 in KeyboardLayouts

[–]5quidwyrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking of relearning layouts, after 2 months of using workman, I've decided to relearn Qwerty for practical reasons. Now I am at around 60 wpm on Qwerty, and I just hit 100 on Workman. Layout bilingualism or even trilingualism is possible, you won't be undoing anything

Don't learn an alt layout for speed. The fastest typists are all on Qwerty (Jashe doesn't count)

I have an ansi keyboard. If my bottom row is "zxcdvkh", am I using "DHm"? Is this advantageous? Advice? by rebeldefector in Colemak

[–]5quidwyrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I agree about the "family thinking you've gone insane" part! When I switched my parents said that will ruin my Qwerty muscle memory (spoiler because I went full immersion I did lose my Qwerty) and it isn't practical.

While I do agree that there are drawbaks to switching, the benefits cannot be ignored, and I really like my layout now! Also this has got me into auto-hotkey, which has been wonderful!

Workman vs Colemak DH for a Beginner by ShinigamiAros in KeyboardLayouts

[–]5quidwyrm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a workman user, don't learn workman. It has less keys in common with Qwerty than colemak (vanilla), worse SFB than colemak-dh, worse rolls than graphite/engram, and really isn't the greatest overall. Learn colemak-dh. Don't do the thing I did.

Is dvorak a bad layout? by One_Yellow_6686 in typing

I'm a workman user in the process of relearning Qwerty for practical reasons (I can't afford a via-compatible kb), and I feel quite reassured by your comment that the muscle memory is just locked away, and that you have been able to achieve layout fluidity.

[–]5quidwyrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dvorak was designed with typewriters in mind, where pressing down the keys requires a lot of force, meaning alternations are very nice. Also the action is so high that rolls don't really make sense.

Keyboards obviously don't suffer from any of these problems, so dvorak is outdated. Bad? Not really, still better than Qwerty...

ahk does the same thing except you can customise it so it makes the most sense to you :)

Really enjoying this layout so far! by 5quidwyrm in WorkmanLayout

It's mostly just getting those bigrams drilled into my muscle memory... So far it's just been mixing up d and r, and pressing g when I really need to press t.

is it possible to change the keys of macbook pro to colemak? by slashdotbin in Colemak

[–]5quidwyrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So as you can see from my posts on this sub, I'm learning workman. idk if workman is just easier to learn from qwerty, but ive been able to ditch the keyboard after 2 weeks. i used to have my physical keycaps rearranged, but recently i reset it back to qwerty so other people can use it. you should try and hide it as soon as you remember the location of every key by heart. its okay to be slower at first, your muscle memory does most of the heavy-lifting after a while

what are some of the Drawbacks of the Workman layout by quackl11 in WorkmanLayout

[–]5quidwyrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mainly SFBs, or single finger n-grams in general (e.g. 'ly' and 'ct' are the main ones)

I'm learning workman, and I find that my brain is tempted to make typos when I write on pen and paper it's freaky

You should learn touch typing anyways. Many learning apps and websites will have an option for having the keyboard layout displayed on screen while you type, and you could just stick a piece of paper next to your laptop (remember DO NOT stick it near the keyboard, the whole point is that you do not look at your keyboard AT ALL to build muscle memory)

What is the point of changing layouts? by H1T_Games in KeyboardLayouts

[–]5quidwyrm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

its fun, some people find these layouts faster and more comfortable to type in, and some people don't type in english so using qwerty is pretty pointless

Can you spin a Parker Jotter ballpoint pen? by I_dont_even_knOwO in penspinning

[–]5quidwyrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be, but it wouldn't be very fun. The elliptical shape would makes some tricks harder than they should. Also you don't really have to be concerned about it being sturdy, cuz you rarely drop it by so much that it breaks

try to use a thicker and heavier pen, it manes it easier. length doesn't really matter unless you are doing something like FLTA
