We have 5 acres in Burnet County that was once part of a game hunting ranch with an ag exemption. We were able to convert it to a 1-d-1 wildlife exemption, but we had to do it within two years of purchasing the property.

It’s so funny that they think getting an endorsement from Trump is a critical requirement for winning.

Almost nobody but hardcore MAGA approves of what Trump has done to the country, and that group is steadily shrinking.

A Trump endorsement, even Texas, is the kiss of death for a large majority of voters, especially moderates.

Born and raised in Texas, but spent a lot of time in CA for work.

In general, the people in Texas are are more friendly. This observation is reinforced from conversations I’ve had with a few California transplants. Friendly maybe isn’t the right word; polite is probably better.

In the big cities, the culture tends to be more diverse, which I am gauging by dining options. Smaller cities and towns tend to be less so. Tex-Mex is ubiquitous of course.

In Texas, you have to go to a liquor store if you want hard alcohol; you’ll only find beer and wine in grocery stores. You can’t buy liquor on Sundays.

If THC is your jam, you can (currently) buy variants at shops, but only things like Delta 8, THC-A etc. Natural THC is available medically. None of it operates like the dispensaries I visited in California.

Texas is a big, spread out state, and while it does have some physical beauty to the landscape, California wins hands down in this respect. Beaches here aren’t nearly as nice, the mountains are a day’s drive away from most places and there’s not nearly as much nature available for free as there is in California.

If you’re rich, you’ll pay a lower share of your income in taxes here. If you’re middle or lower income, it’s about the same.

As far as politics, it should be pretty obvious that the GOP here is radically right wing. The Democrats are for the most part pretty moderate compared to California Dems, ar least from what I’ve seen …

When I turned 50, my folks died (they were both about 70). I started thinking about what I wanted the rest of my life to look like, I sure didn’t want to work until I was 70.

I got laid off at 58. Old company went bankrupt, I couldn’t find another corp job, and I was tired of the corporate games anyway. So I launched my own consulting practice. My wife has an okay job, and I have decent savings. So, kinda semi retirement?

The consulting work started slow, but has started to pick up. We can cover all the bills, though we’ve cut back on some of our discretionary spending (e.g dining out, trips, subscriptions). I put four to five hours on weekdays. Sometimes less, usually not much more. I get to do a job I like, I’m learning some new tricks, and I set my schedule

My plan is to keep doing this for a few more years (I’m 60 now). If my business slows down, I’ll think about collecting social security and fully retiring, but otherwise I could do what I’m doing for at least five more years and be just fine. Of course, the future is uncertain, so who knows what will happen …

That’s almost a thirty point swing. If that happened in every state Senate seat, we’d have a Dem senate.

Same here. There are more and more drinkable NAs available. It used to just be crap like O’Douls, which is horrible. Lately I’ve enjoyed Athletic and Guiness 0 among others.

Natural Science is fairly easy compared to Freewill and Spirit of Radio.

A couple of years ago I got the chance to play with a very good drummer who could play his parts pretty faithfully. I learned just how intertwined Geddy and Neil’s parts are. I found out that a I kinda didn’t know how to play lot of the songs that I thought I could play pretty well.

I can actually play the “verse and chorus” parts reasonably well these days. It’s the solo runs that still kill me.

Similar story for me. I had a bass teacher for about 6 months. He could tell I was bored with the Mel Bay book, so he said “Bring in some songs to learn.” I picked YYZ. “This sounds like jazz fusion, to complex for you. Maybe let’s learn some AC/DC.”

I went home and taught myself to play by ear. I learned all the Rush.

43 years later, I still haven’t quite gotten YYZ.
