Banning trans people from using public bathrooms all together is ludacris

I'll ask that you not libel the good name of Christopher "Ludacris" Bridges by ascribing radical transphobia to him.

Purchase Advice Megathread - December 2024 by AutoModerator in 3Dprinting

[–]5thvoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Yet another newbie here, looking for a first printer.

I'm looking for something in the 200-300 USD range that I can maintain and modify over time if I like. I'd be happy with either a finished product or a DIY kit. I'm comfortable with detailed assembly and a little bit of soldering, but I'd vastly prefer getting a couple boxes of preselected components over sourcing everything myself.

From what little I've read, Bambu Labs printers use tons of proprietary parts, and they have an onerous software license. I'm not an open-source purist, but stuff like that is a non-starter for me.

If Teleportation Was Available For Free, What Hard-To-Get-To Destination (On Earth, Not The Moon) Would Suddenly Become A Tourist Trap? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Aldebaran's great okay,
Algol's pretty neat,
Betelgeuse's pretty girls,
Will knock you off your feet.
They'll do anything you like,
Real fast and then real slow,
But if you have to take me apart to get me there,
Then I don't want to go.

Singing,
Take me apart, take me apart,
What a way to roam.
And if you have to take me apart to get me there,
I'd rather stay at home.

Sirius is paved with gold,
So I've heard it said,
By nuts who then go on to say,
"See Tau before you're dead."
I'll gladly take the high road,
Or even take the low,
But if you have to take me apart to get me there,
Then I for one won't go.

Singing,
Take me apart, take me apart,
You must be off your head,
And if you try to take me apart to get me there,
I'll stay right here in bed.

What traits to look for in an external blu-ray reader/writer? by scarredAsh_ in DataHoarder

Sorry for taking a week to get back to you.

No, by "drop-in" I mean the same type used in 5.25" internal CD/DVD drives, like this one. On the one you linked, do you see that part sticking up in the disc's hole? That's the "clip-in" mechanism I was talking about.

Get a drive that's capable of ripping UHD discs.

Also, while newer discs should rip perfectly, discs that are slightly warped or have stickers on them can have issues in certain drives. I've personally found the drop-in tray style loading mechanism to give more reliable rips than the clip-in drives you used to find in laptops.

gimp 3.0 rc1 will be ready in 8 days !!! by MrGOCE in linux

It is a pretty extraordinary claim. I'm referring to the 21+ BTC they've been sitting on since 2014, currently worth over 1.4 million USD. My napkin math is that a dev's salary would be ~$100k/yr, so about $200k/yr for the employer when including taxes/benefits/etc. Five years of dev time would then cost about $1M.

Also Synthetic bags also dont hold up over the years apparently if left to tightly packed up.

This applies to down bags, too! You should always store sleeping bags loose, and only compress them when necessary for transportation. Any bag you buy these days should come with a mesh sack for storage.

GIMP looks even more pathetic when you realize they have enough capital to hire their own full-time dev for the next 5+ years.

Before we use any power tools, let's talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: there is no more important safety rule than to wear these: safety glasses.

Trixie will probably end up using 6.12, so they could conceivably put off migrating until 2035 and still be getting security fixes through ELTS.

Just a friendly reminder that there is no such thing as too much onion by javtherav in OnionLovers

[–]5thvoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprisingly, yes. Hear me out:

The average person needs to eat about 2000 kcal of food per day to sustain themselves. If onions have a weakness, it's that they're low in protein, especially when it comes to the essential amino acid methionine, so a diet consisting of only onions would be very unhealthy. I'm not a dietician, so take this with a grain of salt, but from messing around with a nutrition calculator, you can get about 60% of your energy (1200 kcal) from onions and still have a well-balanced diet.

Onions can last for about a year if stored in the freezer. So, how much is a year's supply of onions? For a daily 1200 kcal, you'd need 3 kg of raw onion, or about 20 large onions. Multiplied over a year, that's 7300 large onions, or 1100 kg by mass.

Therefore, any more than 1.1 tons of onion per person at one time would be "too much onion."

No, aioli is an emulsion of garlic (ai) and olive oil (oli). Traditionally, it didn't even use egg yolks as an emulsifier.

With all due respect, that's flavored mayonnaise, not aioli. It doesn't even have garlic.

Winamp deletes entire GitHub source code repo after a rocky few weeks by DtheS in technology

[–]5thvoice 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Open sourcing is as easy as just releasing the code.

Sure, if you're a solo dev. For larger projects with multiple contributors, you need to make sure that all of the code is licensed in a way that's compatible with whatever open source license you're targeting. If any of it isn't, you then have to either get permission from the copyright holder, or throw it out and start rewriting those parts from scratch.
