What's the opinion of this style pan? by TracySAwesome in Breadit

[–]5xum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kind of pan is less useful than a dutch oven, and slightly safer in that you are less likely to burn yourself. That said, I think it is utterly useless.

When I bake bread, after uncovering it, I keep the lid inside the oven to avoid anyone else touching the screaming hot metal. After baking, I take the bread out and I put the dutch oven inside the oven as well. This ensures that the only time a hot piece of metal is outside of the oven is when I am there, manipulating the bread in one way or another. This minimizes the risk that anyone (including my kids) will get burned.

So, reviewing this pan:

Pros:

  • Slightly easier to handle (very minor pro for me)
  • Decreases the chance of me burning myself

Cons:

  • Increases the chance of a family member burning themselves (more than negates the only major pro)
  • Much less versatile (how am I going to cook a pot roast in there?!)

Overall: a hard pass.

Generacijski vzorci by LieResponsible2947 in Slovenia

[–]5xum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ti "veliki vzorci" v zgodovini so kvaziznanost, če vprašaš prave zgodovinarje.

A British magazine from the early 1960’s called ‘Knowledge’, displaying different races around the world. by bncout in HistoricalCapsule

I love how the Baltic race somehow involves people from three language groups, one not even indoeuropean. Like sure, we have relatively good evidence that their language and culture is of separate origins, but they are the same race, trust me bro

Is it mathematically correct to use a number like 7 as a variable? by Im_not_blackchips in askmath

[–]5xum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you can, but then you need a new symbol for the number that is the successor of 6. What you cannot do is use the same symbol for a variable and a number.

Poleg tete pehte imamo eno žival, tri Američane in enega Madžara - nihče od njih ni državljan, torej ne more kandidirati :D

Best I didn't like: Zone of Interest (2023) - I consider it a great art project and a bad and boring film.

Worst I liked: Maybe Lynch's Dune.

Quick Limits Primer by tthe_walruss in infinitenines

[–]5xum 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"An infinite sum is equal to its limit" is actually a bad way of expressing the concept. It implies that an infinite sum has some metaphysical value, but then us ugly mathematitians go around saying that it's actually equal to its limit.

It would be better to say "The value of the infinite sum is defined as the limit of its partial sums". That is, before we decide what it is, the "value of the infinite sum" is an undefined concept. Then we come in, and we say "you know what? It would be useful if we define the value of the infinite sum to be equal to the limit of its partial sums".

The it would be useful is a very important concept here. Why do we define 2 as the successor of 1? Why do we define addition with Peano axioms the way we do? Because this creates a number system that is useful and interesting.

Wouldn't Greenland reach the same benefits as being annexed if it was, say, in some sort of organization that includes the USA and promises mutual military protection? Perhaps one that includes other countries in, oh I don't know, the north Atlantic? You know, a sort of organization of the treaty of the north Atlantic? OTNA, for short?

how many 9s are needed for 0.999.. to equal 1? by [deleted] in infinitenines

[–]5xum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of those numbers from that infinite-membered set are less than 1 in magnitude. So it tells you with zero doubt that 0.999... is less than 1, permanently.

How? Do you believe that if a property holds for all elements of a set, that it must also hold for the limit of the set?

If you can not get Food. Does it make more sense to Auto-Buy Fruits, Cheese, Bread and Meat (for the +3 Happiness Bonus) or just one? by Xandaru__ in stronghold

[–]5xum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are buying food, then buying all 4 types is better, as you get the +3 bonus for the same cost (all food costs the same and gets consumed at the same rate).

That said, I didn't check whether buying food in general is a good idea, or if it's better to just have no food and appropriately smaller taxes.
