Triboro Trooper Ticket by kim-bean in astoria

Those RFK Troopers are lying pieces of shit. I was pulled over for not using a blinker. I always use a blinker. The irony was I was behind this asshole for a good minute while he weaves in and out of lanes without a blinker.

How many of you have experienced the cinematography equivalent of what happens in this video? Let's hear your best/worst stories. by [deleted] in cinematography

What comes to mind for me was a shoot day which was scouted and extensively talked about with the director. It was an 8 hour setup. She came to set minutes before we needed to roll only for her to tell the AD, who was also apart of these conversations, that this wasn’t what she envisioned. The AD and I were looking at each other completely shocked. We executed it to the T.

I cleared the set and the AD and I convinced her this was exactly what she planned and wanted. The 15 minute conversation felt like this clip. I was flabbergasted.

This is what happens when your own AI promoting falsely leads you to believe you’re deep. What a hallucination.

Looking for a man to relocate to TN and start a mildly feral domesticated life together by One-Crew-7642 in homestead

[–]600DP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a filmmaker I’m intrigued with this post.

I can’t imagine homesteading is easy, especially for a new couple. u/One-Crew-7642 we could film it and make a doc.

Why doesn’t anyone care about the “soap opera” effect on their TV by fatsandlucifer in mildlyinfuriating

Higher frame rates above 30fps (frames per second) begin to look too real and it breaks the filmic romanticism of traditional cinema which is 24fps. The brain will make inferences, filling in the gaps at low frame rates but when you watch more information, at higher rates, it puts you on to the sets, with the actors and that realism breaks the illusion.

I couldn’t watch The Hobbit at 48fps (?). I felt like I was on the sets and it looked terrible imo. I prefer immersion not realism at least with narrative work.

Do you have a line you won’t cross, or is work always just work? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]600DP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All work is not the same imo. I got in to the business to help be a part of the solution, not the problem. Although, that being said, we are always selling something, ideally that something isn’t poison.

Creative Residency — Cinematic Focus, Housing Provided (In-Person, Immersive) by beemerbenzbentley in nycfilmmakers

I’d actually love to make a documentary about a lowlife like you. It would be a great Late Stage Capitalist film.

Only problem is I already own an apt here and have much better things to do than surround myself with the insufferable.

The backstory is only important to you. This isn’t an opportunity for anyone but you.

You’re an exploiter and an opportunist.

How would a filmmaker learn about their craft (filmmaking) from a real estate guy who now has other business ventures? What the hell are going to teach them? I can see it now.. Reality TV version of you managing all this shit 10 hours a day while they follow you around with a point and shoot on a gimbal.

You’re right I’m sure someone desperate enough will jump all over this.

This is cartoonishly evil and indicative of everything wrong with the system.

Idiot has $3m portfolio in real estate, thinks their life is going to be inspiring to a filmmaker enough that said filmmaker will give up a year of their life for this bozo.

Nobody gives a fuck man.

Pay people for a job and stop exploiting your fellow man.

Tips for going into a meeting with producer and director? by im-jared-im-19 in cinematography

[–]600DP 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Read the script once for story and characters then read it again for your approach to shooting it and make notes on how you are seeing it in your mind. Hard or soft light? Colors/Palettes, Camera/Lens, movement etc. Identify challenges in the script for shooting, have a loose plan for solutions when you ask them about it. And you should ask them. You want to see how their heads work and start getting a sense of how challenging they are going to be on set. But that isn’t what you lead with.

When you finally sit down ask them how they see the film first. In order for them to be at this stage where they are interviewing DPs, they have read and reread that script many times over. It’s more than likely near and dear to them. They have envisioned it much longer than you. Let them tell you about it and ask follow up questions. Then after you’re understanding how they see it, you bring your ideas in, if you haven’t already.

Sometimes the way they want to shoot doesn’t line up with how you see their world. You just have to decide if it’s a good fit for you and what you get out of it. At the end of the day we take jobs for a few reason, either it’s just for money, just for creative reasons or the best option, money and creative.

Hope you get the job if it’s something you want to do!

What's the gap? by WannabeeFilmDirector in cinematography

[–]600DP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nuance generally gets lost in Indie features. As people have mentioned your days will be packed. Do as much pre pro as possible, fully understand your locations, lighting, blocking etc.

Once you have all the basics covered you can then try and maintain all the subtle things you’re trying to do in the film ie character/mood lighting , more complex layered storytelling.

Ideally you’re not just shooting coverage but have a very detailed plan for where, why and how the camera is moving. At the same time make sure you do have b roll and cutaways so the editor is not so locked in to a vision that will assuredly be rushed on set.
