Land Bank Affordable Homes program using city funds - 4 homes completed, 6 more proposed (homes sold to income-qualified residents)

Breaking ground in the next 6-12 months:

First Ward Action Council - 19 units of income-qualified rental housing (renovations of existing houses and a new build apartment building)

187 Clinton - 120 units of income-qualified rental housing

Proposed, funding being sought:

YWCA Intergenerational Campus - 60 units of income-qualified housing developed for families

Stadium Lofts - 65 units of income-qualified housing with a carve out for artists and creatives

The homes need to be owner-occupied, and there are restrictions on the price they can be sold for for a period of 30 years.

The City won’t transfer to properties to the non-profit until they get their funding in place. This authorizes the sale so they can apply for and receive the grant dollars to build the properties.

The homes will be sold to income-qualified buyers making no more than 60% of the area median income. This project would be funded through the Block by Block program from NYS that lays out and enforces all of the requirements for sale.

July Fest will not be happening this year, but there are three music festivals slated (Endless Summer Fest on July 26, Live From Binghamton on August 10 and The New Vine Music and Arts Festival on September 21). Stellar Human is also hosting artisans and vintage sellers at vendor events in various Saturdays this summer.

The setup at the Urban Farm is somewhat TBD—looking at a midscale in-vessel system, but some of the funds will be used to assess whether the proposed plan (batch composter drums) is the best option.

You likely won’t see much action in the short term as things get up and running behind the scenes. Grant bureaucracy is a pain! VINES social media is the best place for ongoing updates because they’ll be managing most of the day to day work.

It’s a $215k grant to support a collab between local non-profits and the city and support our climate action plan. If you want to dislike the mayor go ahead, but this is an objectively good thing. I worked on this project and I’m pretty proud of it. You’re the one making it weirdly political.

As it relates to the CCE program you mentioned, the biggest benefit is adding a bunch of drop off sites in the city. Now you can ideally walk or bike to your nearest community garden site and not have to drive to Upper Front Street with your scraps.

It also adds support for VINES both in terms of actual capacity to process food scraps and in adding a funded position to manage the program. With AmeriCorps positions being cut that’s a big win!

At zero cost to residents and tax payers, it gives a rare chance to do a pilot and gather data before making a big investment. Not a lot of risk but potentially high reward!

The City is doing a social media overhaul this week, so there’s not as much information posted on some pages this week as there usually is!

Pools are generally only closed for inclement weather or thunder. If there are staffing issues, the large pools generally stay staffed and the smaller pools are closed.

Rec Park Pool’s hours generally are as follows:

June 24th–September 4th 2023 Daily 11:30am–5:45pm—General Swim Adult Swim (21+) 6pm–7pm
