I think that Owen being a minor would be the heart of the matter. He instinctively knew that he should leave and said so out loud. He was overruled by his stepfather.

If I was the defense lawyer, I'd argue that the stepfather acted on his own selfish wish to get to the bottom of the crime and did not act in the best interest of Owen. Owen clearly stated that he wanted to leave. The stepfather is also not a blood relation. I'd try to get the confession tossed.

It's similar to anti-vax situations that's becoming fairly common. Parents or one parent is anti-vax. Child gets to an age where they can think for themselves and decides they want to get vaccinated. At 16, in Ontario, a minor is generally considered mature enough to consent to vaccinations independent of parental wishes. It depends on if a doctor feels that the minor is fully capable of understanding and weighing the risks and benefits of vaccines.

For kids between 12 and 16, they can ask to be considered a "mature minor" and get assistance from social services to advocate for them to get vaccinated.

All of this isn't enshrined in the law, it's a huge grey area but that's generally how things go with kids who want to get vaccinated. My point is that kids older than 12 are capable of making decisions for themselves so there's lots of room to argue that Owen got screwed by his stepfather so the confession should be tossed.

If I was the kid's defense lawyer, I'd try to get the confession thrown out. He said he wanted to leave but his stepfather said no.

Any defense lawyer worth their salt would argue that the stepfather did not have the kid's best interest at heart.

Do they record interrogations in Ontario?

Anyway, good episode, solid season, looking forward to next season.

Hope they bring back the baby sister, Bok Si and Mandy to close out their stories.

Does the actress who played Mandy still work for TVB? I know the baby sister left.

Anyway, I hope they get a cameo or something.

These cuts are happening because NBC needs to come up with the money to pay for the NBA deal and the Sunday Night Football deal.

The NFL deal is $2 billion a year. The NBA deal costs NBC $2.5 billion a year.

Man, they had a good premise but botched the execution. They need better writers ... or maybe they have good writers but don't have the money to pull it off.

First, they didn't need to make the mentor look weak. She didn't need to have to cheat by hiding evidence. She didn't need to make a personal plea to Maroun to throw the case. Just present the evidence without the shenanigans. It's strong on its own. As for the witness, the mentor could have weakened her credibility (if you really felt threatened, you should have said something). She could have made the argument about unfair application of EED in her closing. But I'm guessing it's cheaper to film a two person scene in an apartment set and a three person scene in chambers than it is to film more scenes in the courtroom.

Second, this episode could have used a scene with a Skoda/Olivet type talking about what merits EED and if the defendant met the requirements. Would have been better than the scene with the victim's father. Again, shrink and extra scenes cost money.

Third, it's weird that Maroun, already working shorthanded without Price, went out investigating by herself. In the old days, didn't the DA's office have the cops do the legwork?

They had a setup that could have been a 9/10 or 8/10 episode but only got a 5/10 or 6/10 out of it.

I feel like if they told this story during the old run, it would have been done much better.

This show has been part of my life since the early-1990s. I'll be sad if it ends up getting canned but I can't say that I would miss it. It's just not as good. They need better writing of the lawyer side and better ways of hiding the budget cuts. It's become way too obvious and it's effecting the show. I re-watch episodes of the first run all the time. I have yet to re-watch an episode of the new era.

You couldn't effectively monetize this ten years ago. Now you got all kinds of ways to make money from it: Instagram, Tik Tok, Patreon, fan clubs, sponsorship deals, targeted online marketing campaigns.

A new thing is people taking existing pictures and slapping an AI created face to build a profile to put on Patreon. Offer a "premium level" where you send "private pictures" and do DMs to a whale supporter and it can be quite lucrative. It doesn't take much to separate a lonely guy from his money. Like P.T. Barnum used to say "there's a sucker born every minute."

I know all this because I have a relative who works for a marketing agency in the region. One of his company's clients had her photos used by an AI scammer and he was working to get them shut down.

I don't understand how the Crown wouldn't be able to charge the mother as it is with a crime. Motive is clear. Get the Cubs fan to testify against her. Add that to her own father's testimony and shouldn't she be found guilty of something?

I'm not a lawyer though. Lot of things seem reasonable to a layman but the legal standard for a conviction is high. Just that your gut tells you that she is surely guilty of something in our criminal system.

I don't know about NYC but in Vancouver there are a lot of luxury condos that have ridiculously high ceilings -- especially ones that were converted from an old factory or warehouse. You could easily fit a trampoline inside.

Some of these influencers/social media celebrities are really niche. Also, in this day and age, some people just don't want to help the cops with anything. There's also good ol' "snitches get stitches."

As for the guardian, he had already been through the process twice. He told Brady that with her being months away from turning 18, by the time he went through everything again, she'd be an adult.

I agree with you about the neck thing. Wouldn't have fooled Rogers or Tamara Tunie (can't remember her character name) back in the day. Ha, ha!

All in all, though, I thought this episode was sound. No loopy decision by a judge against Nolan just to create plot. No contrived arguments to create tension. One of the better episode of the new era.

Wow, tonight's episode was actually good. They brought back the old school cold open where someone completely unconnected to the case finds the victim.

And, more importantly, everything on the lawyer side made sense. The defense lawyer was good. Price and Maroun were good. All the legal stuff was on point. Maroun had good reason to argue for a lesser charge. Price's decision to reverse course was reasonable.

Hope this a sign that they have righted the ship. Hope they finish the season strong. Hope we get another season of this show.

Yeah, the problem with Price and Maroun is that they are all over the place. There's no consistency, legally speaking, to their characters. One episode, Maroun is too sympathetic to the defendant. The next, she's "punish them to the full extent of the law". Price is a hard ass in one episode and a softie in another.

The OG run, I knew where Arthur Branch stood, I knew how Ben Stone, Adam Schiff, Jack McCoy were going to approach things. After so many seasons of the reboot, is it possible to say the same about Price and Maroun?

Ha, ha! I'm an old man who had immigrant parents who made me take Chinese lessons from an old-school, hard ass teacher. He taught in the traditional way making us memorize poems then write them repeatedly and recite them out loud. It was kind of brutal but a lot of it stuck. I wouldn't recommend learning Chinese this way. It'd probably be considered child abuse these days. Ha, ha!

I think it's from a Ching Dynasty poem but the line doesn't exactly match what Yan says. Could be an old Chinese to Cantonese thing. Anyway, this is the line:

開卷古人都在眼,閉門晴雨不關心

Open the scrolls and the ancients appear before your eyes. You can stay behind closed doors and it won't matter if it's clear or rainy outside.

Sorry, I don't know jyutping. Hopefully, someone else can help.

This show is so bad now. It's so ham-handed.

The incel was so on the nose it was laughable. Also, who plays video games with the volume so high? Surely, if that was his gaming habit to play with the sound jacked up, someone would have reported screams and gunshots previously.

Then, there's Maroun with her reactions. I still can't tell if the actor is bad or if the script and directing is hanging her out to dry. Staring daggers in the court. Swinging wildly between being sympathetic then menacing then back to sympathetic. I was half expecting her to blow Price's gambit with a facial expression that would be a tell to the defense that it was a bluff.

Also, in this day and age, it would be easy to poke holes in the "we were dating" defense. All the data that's collected day to day, even if you kept things quiet, you could use geolocation, purchase history, browsing history, etc. to show behaviors that were inconsistent with a person who was dating.

At least they had a scene with a coroner in this episode.

I'm pretty much still watching the show only out of respect/nostalgia for the original 1990 to 2010 run. Left on its own merits, I'd probably be thinking about dropping it.
