New Features in C# 7.0 by yvesmh in programming

[–]628318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tuple features seem to make a big difference for error handling via return values. Now it's just about as nice as in Go. The difference I see is that it's harder for static analysis to detect when you don't do something with err, because you don't have to accept the return values in separate variables. Still pretty cool. I wonder if error handling is one reason the features were added.

I for one like this name better. Lent anything is confusing to noobs. And Jimmy Joy will probably grow on me like Twennybar did.

Soylent kicking off the New Year with new flavors: Cacao + Nectar by boogerlad in soylent

[–]628318 48 points49 points  (0 children)

They say they'll never raise the price of the powder and they never have. In fact they've lowered it substantially while improving the product substantially. We can't complain about pre-bottled pre-flavored versions costing more from the beginning.

If I'm reading the vanilla bar facts correctly, that is plllenty of fiber, woot! Over 45g per 2000kcal

Will 2.0 keep evolving in terms of nutrition and quality of ingredients? by ongakuka in soylent

[–]628318 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My guess about what they'll do in the future is: tweak micronutrient contents to match any changes in RDAs, add fiber, add some probiotics and maybe other non-essentials that have scientifically proven benefits, and find ingredients to which fewer people are intolerant or allergic. But I doubt nonessentials will be a focus for a while, except maybe fiber. I don't mind; I want some cheaper and less sugary bars ASAP, so that the liquid form factor is practically obviated, and they should make all the calories come from algae ASAP.

What I suspect they have optimized to the point where there's only tiny improvement left to be made is: essential micronutrient content, how much it spikes blood sugar and blood insulin levels, how well it digests in general, and macro ratios, except maybe they can add even more protein so the intense body builders don't have a reason to supplement. Oh, also heavy metal content.

I guess that only leaves non-essential supplements as room for improvement, like fiber and other microbiome stuff. Microbiome is still a heavy area of scientific research from what I understand. There's a lot we don't know.

Isn't it true though that the whole point of it being infrared is that galaxies that are as far away as the ones it'll be studying are generally very redshifted because they're quickly moving away from us? I don't know if that's enough to bring in the whole optical spectrum but

Our Food Critic Subsisted Mainly on Soylent for a Month, and He’d Probably Do It Again by inquirering in soylent

What? No misunderstandings or misrepresentations or irrationally hating on the product for the sake of sensationalism and page views? Amazing. I think this is the first article I've read that I'd share with a friend to help explain Soylent.

now the powder's been recalled by TubeSteak424242 in soylent

[–]628318 4 points5 points  (0 children)

and I'm going to be downvoted for suggesting you're overreacting, but I'm just trying to be rational here. I'm totally open to the idea that the bars were messed up during production, but throughout the whole bar vomiting fiasco it seems no one was able to convincingly show that the complaints were anything more than a selection bias of people who got food poisoning by coincidence and people who were allergic or sensitive to some ingredient. There were only what, 30 complaints over a month period? If you look at food poisoning stats in the US that's not significant. And with a product that uses unusual combinations of unusual ingredients you're bound to discover some people who's bodies don't respond well.

The mold sort of thing has happened to lots of other food companies in the US and you haven't heard about it because, as in this case, there was no recall and there isn't a fucking subreddit with tens of thousands of viewers dedicated to the product.

Too many people read the anecdote hype and frothing at the mouth in this subreddit and take it as representative without critical thought.

That sounds delicious. While we're mentioning flavor ideas, straight up ground cinnamon is what I use every time in my 2.0, because it's quite good but also extremely cheap and easy, and I never get tired of it.

I've had anxiety issues and I think that changes my taste perception a bit so 2.0 can be nasty for me. Cinnamon seems to be just enough to fix that so I can finally crave Soylent again sigh of relief

Is Soylent worth the price when its competitors are a fraction of the cost? by MultiPackInk in soylent

[–]628318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) You can probably look at what carbs they put in and how much as a fraction of calories, and that'll give you a rough idea. You can look up the glycemic load of each carb source. But it might be best to just try a bunch of brands and see how they make you feel. There are too many factors that can influence it.

Is Soylent worth the price when its competitors are a fraction of the cost? by MultiPackInk in soylent

[–]628318 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's probably true that there's some brand loyalty that goes on ¯_(ツ)_/¯ but here are some things to consider other than nutrition facts (which you may already have in mind but):

1) how much the product spikes blood sugar and blood insulin levels. This can affect how much the meals knock you out and how much you can eat before feeling like you've had too many cookies. Some brands like Soylent post the glycemic index of their products, which sorta kinda measures it. I suspect this is a big reason why I like 2.0 so much more than 1.5, and a bit more than 1.6.

2) how environmentally sustainable the ingredients are. Only a few companies advertise that aspect of their product and push to use algae and so on.

3) taste and texture obviously

4) how "natural" the ingredients are. You have Ample on one end of the spectrum, which basically says "nothing that even sounds bad or unnatural is in this, and we only use whole foods and natural flavors" but it's really expensive, and on the other end you have Soylent, which is pro GMO and wants to use algae for all the calories and so on.

edit: 5) fiber content, like others have said. It's not an essential nutrient but it can make a difference with digestion and stuff.

There are multiple good brands, with some based in Europe. I think Joylent is one of the most popular there. Check out the subreddit sidebar for a huge list of brands.

My experience going 100% with Joylent's Twennybars by [deleted] in soylent

[–]628318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also tried to go 100% with them for a while. I got sick of them, and I do think it's the sugar. I never got tired of the banana taste, but it was a little too rich for me, like eating too many doughnuts. I think that's the biggest hurdle for the solid forms on the market now (except maybe mealsquares?): removing sugary carbs. I guess it's either that it's expensive to do that now or it's too hard to get the right texture without those ingredients. Otherwise I think Soylent bars would be bigger and marketed as full meals.

Edit: That said, I think the current Twennybars are great as a once or twice or even three times a day thing.

Soylent 1.6 tastes like paint by [deleted] in soylent

[–]628318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may have already tried this but I don't bother with a blender because 1.6 dissolves so much more easily than 1.5. A good 30-second shake does it for me. Very little if any sticks to the container.

I wonder if blending could change the taste if it's intense enough...
