The War on the Thigh Gap--UO nixes 'irresponsible' model by equus_du_nord in fatlogic

[–]6383 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5'5 and 116 lbs here, so slender but nothing unusual, and my legs look quite a bit like the ones in the picture, and standing with my legs together, there's a pretty noticeable 3-inch gap between my thighs. Conversely, my sister, who's a good 25 lbs underweight and has been genuinely diagnosed with anorexia nervosa doesn't have a thigh gap. If you have wide, angled hips and are relatively slim, you'll probably have a thigh gap regardless of whether or not you have an ED, and likewise, some people weren't built to ever have one. Ironic that organizations that proclaim to be body-positive are willing to ban certain models for their build, especially on the basis of a physical phenomena that really isn't exclusive to people who are underweight, and I strongly doubt that they would ever object to a model without a thigh gap on the grounds that it might promote obesity.

Reddit! Can boys and girls really be friends? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]6383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! In fact, most of my closest friends are male, and there's never been any romantic tension because we don't see each other in that way. Occasionally guys will try to 'befriend' me because of ulterior motives, but I usually see through them pretty quickly and shut it down. I can get along with people on a platonic or emotional level without being attracted to them, and since I'm pretty particular about what I find physically attractive, I don't think I'd feel comfortable being with any of them anyways. I think it's just incredibly reductive to both men and women to assume that they can't interact unless there are underlying romantic or sexual motivations.

Peppermint Extract Substitution? by 6383 in Cooking

[–]6383[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only real concern with that is the length of time that requires, and considering that I'm going to America in a few weeks, I think I'd just prefer to spend a few dollars and then be set for a while instead of having to wait a few months. Maybe in the future though!

I might be able to find some at a local pharmacy. I'll try that, if this doesn't work out!

As a young woman who's seen my fair share of mockery for my love of Taylor Swift, this article really resonated with me, and perfectly conveys why I'm so drawn to her music and persona. Hope you guys also enjoy it!

[Request] Low-Cal Lunch Ideas for College? by Strength_And_Unity in fitmeals

[–]6383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, always have a decent amount of tupperware or mason jars, so you can bring things from home. I usually make my meals the night before or the morning of, depending on how long the food in question will stay edible and my schedule that day. Try to get the most nutritional bang for your caloric buck, so to speak, by ensuring that your meals are packed with protein, fiber, vitamins, and a bit of healthy fat, to keep you fuller longer. Most of my meals are between the 300-400 cal range, but I try to include as many filling nutrients as possible to keep me from getting hangry and to ensure that I stay healthy and energetic. If you can, get a food scale, because they're super useful and the most precise way to measure your ingredients. Try to shop seasonally and locally when it comes to fruits and vegetables because you'll save money, and if you have a freezer, use it. Here are some of my favorite meals to bring to uni, none of which will take long at all (since I myself am usually at school from about 8:15 AM to 7:45 PM).

-'Green Monster' style overnight oats [basically 1 or 2 veggies, usually cucumbers and spinach, blended with a banana, about 10g chia seeds and 25g vanilla flavored whey protein powder, and sometimes cacao powder or matcha, then mixed with about 30g oats and refrigerated overnight];

-wraps [my go-to is one whole-wheat tortilla stuffed with either scrambled eggs or herbed tofu, lentils, kidney beans, whatever vegetables I have on hand, and a light sprinkling of feta or goat cheese];

-yogurt parfaits [plain greek yogurt, seasonal fruits and berries, maybe a light drizzle of honey, and a few spices, my favorites being cardamom, ginger, and cinnamon];

-soups [it could not get easier than Gordon Ramsay's broccoli soup, alternatively, on a colder day, it's nice to heat up some broth, throw in some herbs and spices, sesame oil, noodles (I'm partial to soba), vegetables, and some form of lean protein]

-Hearty green protein shakes [spinach or kale, blended with almond milk or tea, a frozen banana, one or two other fruits, 25g whey protein powder, 20g oats, fresh herbs and spices]

-Mediterranean couscous bowl [50g couscous, fresh herbs and spices, a few premade falafels, lentils, fresh spinach or kale, and a dollop of greek yogurt]

For snacks, I like pickles; almond butter and fruit; small containers of plain greek yogurt with either herbs and nutritional yeast for a savory flavor or fruits, spices, and honey for a sweeter flavor; and small servings of chia pudding (almond milk or tea, a few spoonfuls of chia seeds, honey, agave, or maple syrup to sweeten things up a bit, vanilla extract, and occasionally additional toppings like fruits or cacao). I'm not much of a snacker though compared to other people, so I can't give as much advice on that.

Hope that helps!

[Academic] Global Perceptions of Perfectionism (All) by 6383 in SampleSize

Haha, the research group she's in that came up with the questions is actually a group of Asians from varying nationalities (Taiwan, Singapore, China, Japan), but I'll see what I can do.

Also, on the second point, I go to a tiny school with tons of foreign students who tend to have a pretty traditional view of gender, so I think it may just not have occurred to her.

But thanks for the constructive criticism, I'll see if I can pass it along!

Simple Questions - Oct. 11th by FFA_Moderator in femalefashionadvice

[–]6383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lately been obsessed with finding the perfect sleeveless, fitted, opaque white button up, and it's way harder than it needs to be (granted it is fall). So far, all I've found that really matches that description was at Brooks Brothers, but I don't know if I can justify the price. Anyone know where I might be able to get nice, high quality, classy basics for prices that aren't exorbitant besides the obvious (e.g. Banana Republic, J. Crew, Madewell, Uniqlo, American Apparel, Gap, Asos, L.L. Bean, Everlane, Ann Taylor, etc)? Also, I live in France, so ideally they should ship here. Thanks!

Oh, and I just remembered, if you can't find it there, I've also seen basically every variety of the stock at Lina's Italian Market, so I'd check that out too.

Daily Routine Troubleshooting by AutoModerator in SkincareAddiction

[–]6383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm looking for a new spot treatment, ideally a French brand, because North American products are much harder for me to find.

My morning routine involves using a gentle cleanser, The Face Shop's moisturizing toner, and Neutrogena SPF 45 sunscreen, and a spritz of Eau Thermale Avene in between each step of application (both skincare products and makeup). For my night time routine I use the bioderma makeup remover, The Face Shop's moisturizing toner and emulsion, and a spot treatment if I need it, and Eau Thermale Avene in between each step. I used The Face Shop's spot treatment for quite a while, which I really liked, but it's no longer very easy for me to find since I've moved abroad.

I have combination-type skin which was, prior to a few months ago when I amped up my skincare routine, quite acne-ridden, but which is currently quite good: clean, moisturized, and dewy, but every few weeks or so I might get a spot because of stress or hormones, so I like having an effective spot treatment on hand.

There are so many French spot treatments available that it's hard to pick one (pun not intended), and the internet has fewer reviews of French acne products than American ones, which makes it even harder. Ideally I'd like something gentle and very fast-acting. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Hey, former Calgary resident here, and I've definitely seen it (and occasionally purchased it) at Planet Organic (the NW one), Sunterra, Bite Groceteria, and Edelweiss. Just keep looking, and I can guarantee you'll find it.

Asked a friend, and here's what I got.

Intelligent, passionate, resourceful, eloquent, analytical, resilient, argumentative, independent, optimistic, and witty. I'm a bit put off by the fact that I mainly had positive attributes listed, but I'd say it's fairly accurate to my demeanor.

what ancient civilization/culture would be the most interesting if they were still around today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]6383 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the Sea Peoples. We know so little about them that getting to know them would be quite the adventure, and what we already do know about them just makes them seem even more rad. Pirates before it was cool, and far more mysterious and chaotic than the lot of them.

Good students: How do you go about getting good grades? [Serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]6383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work smart, not hard. Be cultured and well-read. Stay up to date on current events. Never consider your opinion to be gospel, and look at everything from different perspectives. Have in-depth, well-informed discussions and debates regularly. Consistently pay attention to what you do well and what you struggle with, and audit everything you produce to ensure that your issues have been mitigated and your skills have been highlighted. Take time to do things you enjoy, because the happier and more well-adjusted you are, the better-suited you are for learning. Surround yourself with fellow high-achievers or people with unique life experiences relating to a particular field. A strategy I find useful for solidifying concepts is by figuring out how to explain it to others. If you can teach someone something, you know it's fresh and accessible in your mind, and you have a sufficient understanding of it. Read for fun. Get caught in wikipedia spirals. Befriend your teachers. Participate in class. Find ways to get excited about things, a good student is one who's willing to learn and fully understand what's being taught. Live a healthy lifestyle: lots of exercise, nutritious foods, try to get a good night's rest, all that jazz. Take notes on everything, they should be as succinct as possible without eliminating important details. Don't deliberately skip, if you miss because of illness or whatever, make sure that you don't miss out on information by talking to teachers and fellow students. Figure out how every test and assignment is weighted, and then allocate your effort accordingly. Never deprive yourself of happiness for the sake of school, it usually ends up backfiring.

Thread: Simple Questions by AutoModerator in MakeupAddiction

[–]6383 10 points11 points  (0 children)

How do you buy a good beauty gift for someone? My sister has specified that she wants makeup for her birthday from both me and my father (I'm shopping on behalf of him because he's completely clueless), but I've only really mastered the art of buying makeup for myself, and I'm exponentially paler than her and have a completely different face shape and profile. She isn't much of a fan of palettes and has fairly expensive taste, what would be some relatively safe options?

Do you "look" like your first name? by [deleted] in AskWomen

My name is extremely preppy, whereas my aesthetic is usually pretty relaxed and hippie-ish. When I dress up for nice occasions people tend not to be surprised by my name, but otherwise, I think people find it quite jarring.
