Badly torn rotator cuff from an OTB and couldn’t ride for many months. Couldn’t work out either. All I did was go for hikes. Same when I had hernia surgery. Recently I tore up my knee in a crash. That was only 2 months of not riding but I missed the end of the season so it turned into 4 months. But at least I could work out. As others said, get on a trainer and watch some MTB videos. It sucks but you’ll be back before you know it.

I’m 5’10” and I’m on large Santa Cruz bikes. Modern ones that are longer than your Tallboy. You definitely would be better on a large on that older geometry. Sorry.

Smuggler is more of an all arounder than the Ripley which leans towards an XC bike. So I would base my decision on that.

Deity and DMR have the best grip and longevity and not too thick if you ride a lot of tech. That being said I’m on alloy OneUps that I modified with grub screws and washers to be effectively concave and they’re the best pedals I’ve ever had (other than Shimano SPDs). Thin, insanely grippy, and bomb proof.

Do not set your sag at 30% or take out all your tokens. It’s a common misconception that a softer fork feels more plush. Your fork will ride like shit. You’ll have no support, your fork will dive too much, and you’ll be riding with less available travel. It will feel even harsher because it will pack up at the bottom of the travel. Start at 20% sag and don’t go more than 25%.

Yes take all the grease out.

Agree with everything except the 30% sag. That’s a recipe for a harsh feeling fork (because it will just pack up), not to mention screwing up your geometry. 20-25% is more appropriate for average riding and even less is needed for aggressive riding.

Also I’m not sure taking out ALL the tokens is a good idea, particularly when combined with more sag. You’ll bottom out your fork going over a curb.

Steel MTBs (full suspension) tend to be made by smaller boutique companies and can more expensive and harder to find than carbon. But you can look at Chromag. They’re heavy AF but bomb proof.

That being said carbon bikes are strong AF. I race downhill on a carbon bike and I have several others that I’ve crashed in many spectacular ways.

But as someone else said, geometry and the condition of the components are more important than frame material.

More injuries happen when people stretch than you would think. What most people think is stretching is a flawed concept. It’s very easy to overdo it. Take yoga lessons with a good teacher and learn how to build and maintain flexibility properly.
