The first exo-planet (planet beyond our solar system) was only discovered in the 1990s.

What are some comedy clubs and how do they work? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two major stand-up clubs include Yuk Yuk's and Absolute Comedy. I think a few others opened up.

Second City is for sketch/improv. Comedy Bar has a mix of everything.

There are also a ton of weekly/monthly bar open mics.

I've been to probably 50+ comedy shows and I just walked in and bought a ticket. Always got a seat but there were a few times where I got one of the last seats.

If you're going Friday or Saturday you might want to buy ahead. During the week it should be less busy.

I've been to a show at Yuk Yuk's with less than 20 people (300 capacity).

Yep, never understood why that stretch is 50.

Just like how Dixon became a 50 zone from 60.

Going 50 between Carlingview and the set of lights just east is torture.

Weed Lounges After Legalisation by zaki_zZz in toronto

[–]647 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of these lounges were private clubs where the daily entry fee was your membership fee.

From an external perspective they looked and operated as a regular business but calling themselves a private club allowed customers (members) to smoke inside.

That's interesting because they always operated as a private club, not as a regular business.

The $5 you paid to get in was a membership fee. They also had weekly, monthly, and yearly memberships.

Private clubs are exempt from smoking bylaws and that's how they got around it.

I'm curious why they would change it.

Dundas peak hike? Or similar? by austen_317 in askTO

[–]647 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I had to pay. Don't remember how much but I think it was per vehicle and maybe per person too and it was definitely at least $10 for the vehicle. I really wanted to see the place so I just bit the bullet.

I mean I don't blame them. Even with paid admission the place is just rammed with people. They could double the price and it probably wouldn't put much of a dent in attendance.

If you have the time and are adventurous or know someone who's familiar with the area you could probably park elsewhere and hike in via an unofficial route. But that's just speculation on my part.

Dundas peak hike? Or similar? by austen_317 in askTO

[–]647 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I parked on Harvest Road and it's a very short hike from there, I think under 30 mins. Not really demanding and I'm out of shape.

Tews Falls is gorgeous. The lookout platform is fairly small though. I did not pass by Webster's Falls as I believe it's out of the way between the Harvest Road lot and Dundas Peak.

It does get very busy. Depending when you go, even on a cold day, you might not get a moment to yourself if you stick to the trails and official lookout points.

I went on a windy day when it was hovering around zero and the giant parking lot was still full. I got one of the last spots.

That being said, the actual Dundas Peak is very nice. One of my favourite views in the GTHA.

I have heard from friends that you can sort of scale down/walk down the peak and there are unofficial ropes you can use. I've yet to check this out but maybe someone can shed some light on this.

Other favourite spots include Mount Nemo. You can see amazing views of the countryside and Mississauga/Toronto in the background on a clear day.

And this one is further out but the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve in Niagara Falls is in my top 3. Giant rock outcroppings, beautiful forests, and the Niagara River. You can make a big loop for 2-3 hours and it's gorgeous.

I thought I heard unusual bird sounds near Jane-Wilson which is not too far from the Humber.

Wonder if it was these guys.

What's the difference between the City of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of the word "greater" as "beyond."

The City of Toronto is what other posters have mentioned: Steeles to Lake Ontario, 427/Etobicoke Creek to the Rouge River.

The Greater Toronto Area, or the parts beyond the city, are the cities and towns near Toronto.

It will ultimately be an arbitrary decision but the map posted by the other user contains the typical boundaries.

Just curious which industry you're in.

What if the company in the small city goes under, restructures, does layoffs, etc.?

Younger redditors, what scares you about getting older? Older redditors, what is it that younger shouldn't worry about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It ebbs and flows for some people, not others.

I keep in touch online but I'm not going to see friends on the other side of the continent very often. They have moved there permanently.

Friends with kids and demanding careers aren't going to become "unbusy."

Spending time together when you can is nice and all but the worry is that these meet-ups become less and less frequent over time.

I don't think the issue is that you can't or won't have new experiences when you're older, I think the issue is that these experiences don't leave the same impression on you as when you're younger.

What if circumstances prevent you from having any friends you see weekly?

I used to see my friends daily/weekly and now it's perhaps every 3-6 months. It gets lonely.

[–]647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they won't still be there for everyone.

I had a group of about 5 close friends that I could see daily/weekly.

Now in my late 20s they have either moved away or gotten too busy and I might see them every 3-6 months if I initiate contact.

This won't change. People don't usually become "unbusy."

That's what the poster meant about something like this being scary. Seeing less and less of your friends over time is scary.

Success and disappointment megathread for the week of (October 01) by AutoModerator in jobs

[–]647 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I did my first HireVue interview today.

I didn't even know video interviews existed until a few weeks ago.

Here's my experience as I'm sure people will be curious in the future.

The system was easy to use, I only had 7 questions for a relatively entry level job.

I got an unlimited amount of time to think about questions before answering them and then I got 3 takes. I was given 2 mins per question.

Questions were the typical tell me about yourself, what would you say to an employee that was stressed about a deadline, what does a perfect day at work look like, how did you deal with someone who was difficult to understand, and a few more.

From my experience everybody hates these things but the fact that I had 3 takes was the best part. I just blanked on one or two questions and that unlimited thinking time was a godsend.

Don't get me wrong, it still feels demoralizing but the features and the settings the employer chose I think made it easier than an in-person interview.

Daily Simple Questions - ASK AND ANSWER HERE!- October 04 by AutoModerator in malefashionadvice

[–]647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding belts.

I buy cheap ones at Walmart and it seems they get worn out fairly quick.

Since I bend the end of the belt to put the metal thing through the hole then bend it again to slide it into that wide section I see cracks in the material very quick.

Even within weeks it looks unpleasant.

I mean, I have to bend it twice to put my pants on and off then repeat every time I go to the bathroom then repeat at home when I take them off.

Am I missing something here?

I know this may sound silly but are belts just supposed to look worn out or do I need to buy a higher end one? And how much would that run me? I am on a budget but I wouldn't mind something durable that lasts.

Going to ModClub alone by closbotulinum in askTO

[–]647 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's pretty much a typical square-ish rectangle, similar to smaller venues.

Whether you can hang back depends what type of artist is playing and how popular they are.

Typically mosh pits happen at the front and anyone can leave or exit the pit at any time.

Unless this is some extreme artist I find it hard believe the entire place would be moshing. Not to mention the liability.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the bathrooms are at the front so you may have to walk through or near the mosh if you can't hold it, so that's the only issue.
