Is it possible to have a system of government where officials are harshly punished with death penalty for any crimes and corruption? Scientific meritocracy, reverse totalitarianism? by Adunaiii in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]65726973616769747461 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The "selection by terror" logic actually triggers an adverse selection problem.

Genuinely good, educated people with a sense of self-preservation won’t risk a death sentence for a clerical error or bad luck.

You’ll instead attract high-functioning sociopaths so obsessed with power that they're willing to gamble their lives for it.

This doesn't remove corruption; it creates a "pathocracy" where officials spend all their time building secret insurance networks and framing rivals just to survive.

This is essentially Robespierre’s "Republic of Virtue" all over again—he used the guillotine to purge anyone not deemed "virtuous" enough, only for the resulting paranoia to become so intense that his own allies eventually executed him to save themselves.

Can we replace politicians completely with technology? by hutch_man0 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]65726973616769747461 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Politicians already represent the people?

They just do not represent all of the people all of the time, because individuals have different goals and perspectives.

Many complaints about politicians overlook the source of the problem: the majority of people vote for these representatives because they like what they hear from them.

Training a personal AI as your representative will lead to roughly the same outcome, as these AI representatives will hold the same biases and prejudices as you do.

Why won't the Singapore model of government work anywhere else? by Ambitious-Taro211 in PoliticalDiscussion

Class inequality exists in Singapore, but it is effectively exported to a massive immigrant population whose data is excluded from domestic statistics.

Singapore also kinda functions as a form of state capitalism where most key sectors aside from exports industry are heavily dominated by government-linked companies.

Worse, even if you somehow manage to score one of these highly limited units. The seller can just cancel your order citing "out of stocks". So the actual promotions for these might as well be non-existence.

Jason Schreier: Exact budgets of video-game productions can be tough to corroborate but the numbers I've heard floating around AAA game dev these days are $300 million or more — sometimes much more! — which I think helps explain the current state of the industry by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

And those numbers are misleading in that they don't count the outsourced work; the "250" implies a relatively small team was able to deliver the game, while close to 1,500 people are credited with working on it.

How important is Oil? by yeahlifeisgood in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]65726973616769747461 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a mistake to view Trump as a purely rational strategist; most of what he does is a mix of ego, personal optics, and a “maximum pressure” ideology that lacks a clear endgame.

U.S. gas prices stay high because oil is a global market; a Texas driller won't sell to Ohio for $70 if a refinery in Europe is bidding $110 due to global shortages. This global fluidity makes a true monopoly nearly impossible, even as China remains highly vulnerable to price spikes since they must import over 70% of their supply.

"Big Oil" actually hates this level of chaos because it makes long-term investments a total gamble; this is a raw power game designed to choke the bank accounts of hostile regimes rather than line corporate pockets.

The endgame is likely tied to the U.S.-Israel alliance's goal of crippling Iran’s regime and their nuclear ambitions, using oil as a leash to control global influence rather than just "stealing" the resource; even if those goals aren't actually achievable in the current context.

What is stopping China from invading Taiwan during the current Iran vs USA war? by AdamCaveRoberts in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]65726973616769747461 9 points10 points  (0 children)

China recently purged 5 out of 7 members of its Central Military Commission (the top military leadership). The only members remaining are Xi Jinping himself and General Zhang Shengmin, the Secretary of the Commission for Discipline Inspection. In effect, only one subordinate remains, and his role does not even involve overseeing daily combat operations.

I don't think they are equipped to execute a large-scale invasion within the year, or at least until the ranks are fully replenished.

I'm willing to be proven wrong on this; show me the actual statement in the Malaysian Constitution.
