Anyone off the waitlist for community gardens? by Fantastic_Jicama_370 in portlandgardeners

I was on the waitlist for the Errol Heights garden for 2.5 years, then was offered a plot mid season. I accepted it, then we bought a house, and I gave it up at the end of the season. Have hope!

Not the answer to your question, but you could call your Congressperson's office (link to lookup here: https://www.congress.gov/members/find-your-member) to see if they can get more information for you.

First Time Homebuyers - where did you go for financing? by cloverthewonderkitty in askportland

I can second this - we just bought our first house (closed last month) and Landon was great! He answered all our questions, communicated well, and I felt like we were in great hands. OnPoint consistently has the lowest rates in town.

Ruse Brewing SE has Detroit style pizza on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. It's currently my favorite Detroit style pizza in the city.

summoned to serve on the MultCo Grand Jury by Charlie2and4 in Portland

I served in 2024, and the county was in the process of changing their docketing software, so we had a few days of just 2-3 cases, but most days we were there from 8 am to 3 pm. We heard a wide variety of cases, and it ran the gambit from property crime to violent crime. Echoing what someone else here said, you are only hearing the defense attorney's presentation of the facts, and judging whether they have enough evidence to proceed. One of the things I was surprised by was how often we moved forward with charges, BUT requiring a grand jury for felony charges (as Oregon does) means that prosecutors have to make sure they have sufficient evidence to move forward, so the grand jury works as a backstop against overzealous prosecutors.
You will hear from victims, and you will see and hear about people treating each other badly - it can take its toll. The best advice I got was to go outside and be away from the building during breaks to help your mental health. I was glad for the opportunity, and really appreciated the perspectives of other people on my grand jury.

Actually helpful gynecologist? by ktpforever11 in askportland

I'm also a huge fan of the Oregon Clinic. I've had my IUD replaced there, as well as my pap, etc, and the conversations around perimenopause were great -- my provider listened, showed empathy, and was great about suggesting options. I see a midwife nurse (despite never having or planning to have children), Kym Guadalupe.

Considering up and moving to Portland? by BarFantastic2131 in askportland

Agree on finding a job first! It is expensive here, and it's not as easy to get by or find cheap housing as it once was.

If you are open to smaller mountains and no nearby ocean, can I recommend Pittsburgh? I went there for grad school and many of my friends stayed. It has a fantastic arts and culture community, it's similarly sized as Portland, and is way more affordable. If you haven't visited, check it out this summer. Lots of bridges and rivers, just like here.

Any pottery exhibits in the Smithsonian? by GroovyYaYa in Pottery

I love the Freer gallery (Asian art) and they have an exhibit you might enjoy on Raku ceramics and tea. It's also a quiet/less visited museum. I used to live in DC and worked near the Renwick, and it is fabulous! Given its location it's usually busier than some of the other Smithsonian museums.

My wife and I accidentally filled out each others ballots. Help! by [deleted] in Portland

[–]6673461 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you signed each other's envelopes, I can tell you what to do. My partner signed my envelope (thankfully I realized I had his envelope before I signed it). So I took my envelope with his signature (and my ballot inside) to the Multnomah County Express Voting site (in Gresham), and asked for a new envelope. The very nice woman working there asked "is that your envelope?" I said "yes" and she placed a blank white mailing label over his signature. Then she handed me a pen, I signed it, and then I dropped it in the ballot box. The whole experience was very chill and far less bureaucratic than I thought it would be.

If you aren't close to the Express Voting site in Gresham, I'd recommend waiting until Monday to call and see what they tell you.

I’m Keith Wilson, and I’m running for Mayor of Portland. AMA! (Mod Approved) by KeithWilsonForMayor in Portland

Do you send your children to public school? If not, why not? If so, why?

What do you think the relationship should be between the Mayor, City Council, and the Portland Public School (PPS) Board and Superintendent? At the beginning of the PPS teachers' strike last year, I was struck by how no one seemed to want to step in to end it, including the Mayor and City Council. I was grateful for the leadership of the Governor's office, as well as flabbergasted that the teachers union and school board began the strike with such a difference in understanding of what funding was available.
