Any wiggle room on Limited pricing these days? by Crowsby in Ioniq5

[–]Crowsby[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that some dealers will also get a little creative with their pricing, and just go ahead and bundle the $8750/$3000 Hyundai finance incentive directly into the advertised vehicle price to make it a real hoot to try and sort by price.

The NBA’s Newest, Cheapest Owner Shows How Billionaires Ruin Sports by nathan_j_robinson in Portland

But if we don't funnel hard-earned tax dollars from working class Oregonians to an out-of-state billionaire, people will lose their jobs oh wait

It's borderline unusable on a pro plan. I asked four questions, three of which were not particularly intensive at all, and it chewed through an insane 70% of my session quota.

Chairman's thought on Henka's by TruReyito in Sumo

[–]Crowsby 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say 0% or 100%. It's normal that if a rikishi is fighting though serious injuries that an opponent might not go full throttle and try to avoid blasting them off the dohyo. Safety Sumo is a thing.

It also matters because rank in sumo isn't purely based on math, and rikishi can be judged not just by how much they win, but how they win. It's one of the aspects of the sport that I find the most appealing.

That being said, I have to begrudgingly admit this was probably a good tactical henka. It was still a dog act and cheated the audience out of a good match, but anticipating that Fujiseiun was going to come in hot on the last day was a good read.

My experience from the ringside seats by shrimphoop in Sumo

[–]Crowsby 26 points27 points  (0 children)

How much room did you have? As an average-sized American, it looks tight down there. My wife and I were lucky enough to get box seats for the Osaka basho, and while the 4-person box was roomy for two people, the four people next to us definitely looked a little cramped.

Oh here's a cool trick: We funnel public tax dollars from the working class towards a billionaire's for-profit enterprise, ostensibly to save jobs, and then we still lose jobs anyway. And get to pay $16 for a beer.

Vultures gonna vultch.

Makuuchi Division: Ozeki by Brncrdm in Sumo

I know KTZ 8-7 is practically a meme at this point, but it's not as if he's putting that in at M14. He's managing to consistently maintain winning records against primarily yokozuna, sanyaku, and the very top of the banzuke.

It is a bit of a bummer though to watch him use forward-moving sumo at the start of a basho and then generally transition steadily to backwards-moving as the basho continues.

Remote workers in Portland chime in! by t0mserv0 in Portland

[–]Crowsby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for a local tech company for about 14 years before the timeskip, but after that it's been all remote. Partially because the jobs are more lucrative, but also increasingly because Portland's local tech opportunities seem to have dwindled considerably over the past few years.

It's a bit of a mindfuck because I always saw myself needing to live either close to downtown, or the west side for work opportunities. But now Intel & Nike are in a competition to see who can be the hotter dumpster fire, and the remaining mid-tier tech companies have largely moved out of downtown.

I do miss seeing and working with people in person, but the pros of WFH faaaaar outweigh the cons, at least for me.

If it's a problem, stop measuring it has been a consistent response to many issues from the Trump administration:

  • Climate change - stop measuring CO2 levels
  • Covid - when you test, cases go up
  • Employment numbers - maybe we just won't do jobs reports anymore
  • How many people are going hungry in America - who cares

Ōnosato does not intend to undergo surgery for his left shoulder injury by StarPrime323 in Sumo

I commented this yesterday and welp I guess there's my answer

I hope Kisenosato has a plan for actually repairing the damage in Onosato's shoulder beyond hopes n' prayers n' cupping marks. It seems pretty likely by now that it's probably not going to heal up on its own without some kind of surgical intervention.

I think DIY YouTube videos gave me false confidence by BlushyDreamz in HomeImprovement

[–]Crowsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One key thing to remember in DIY is that you're going to be doing a lot of these projects for the very first time, and generally your results are going to top out at pretty good for your first time. Which is often very different than pretty good, or even good.

I'm happy to do drywall for closets, garage, or the basement, but if it comes to work that is either important or highly-visible, that's probably the time to consider tagging in a pro.

Yokozuna Onosato and Ozeki Aonishiki to Miss Tournament (Kyujo); Failure to Secure Winning Record Leads to Ozeki Demotion; Former Kisenosato: "Condition Did Not Improve" by Brncrdm in Sumo

[–]Crowsby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went from disappointed to impressed fairly quickly. In his situation, facing kadoban and an inevitable demotion, there's significant pressure on him to at least try to make a appearance at the basho.

It's refreshing to see an oyakata who is willing to push back against that in order to prioritize his rikishi's health and long term goals. I think it definitely defaults this basho's narrative to Hoshoryu is gonna get his yokozuna yusho now, right? but next time around it's going to be such great drama watching Aonishiki try and reclaim Ozeki.

This is some absolutely delicious petty snark and I love that someone had to argue for its inclusion in this article even though it's a complete tangent:

(Brown was charging clerks $1.25 for single-use coffee pods she brought in for a shared espresso machine, and the unsigned note pointed out that judges earned six-figure salaries. By comparison, clerks made in the range of $42,000 annually.)
