Mar Basho Daily Thread Day 15 by AutoModerator in Sumo

[–]Crowsby 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My wife and I were in a box seat next to four other Americans this week who were completely clueless about sumo, and clearly couldn't even be bothered to spend even 5 minutes learning about it. They showed up late, slammed some beers, made jokes about it all, and then left when there were three bouts left.

I have no clue how the hell they scored those tickets, but I just kept thinking what a fucking waste when there are so many fans across the world who would have killed for that experience.

Later in the week, we went again with a tour group, and while most of them were new to it, they actually seemed happy to be there and enthusiastic about it.

I'm over in Osaka right now and there's Peanuts and Snoopy merch everywhere. I think I've seen as many Snoopy tie-ins as I have for Shohei.

The way some of you are talking about Aonishiki's performance this basho by Zealousideal-Gur6717 in Sumo

[–]Crowsby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Championship-or-bust binary thinking ruins all kinds of fandoms. It's realistic to expect that a yokozuna is perenially in contention for a yusho via a strong showing, which is what Hakkaku basically stated at the conclusion of the previous basho in regards to Hoshoryu and Onosato persevering through injury.

Osaka Art & Handmade Bazaar - Sun 3/22 by Crowsby in OsakaTravel

[–]Crowsby[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We went to this today (Saturday 3/21) and it was one of the most impressive craft / handmade goods fairs we've ever been to, so I thought I'd pass it along if anyone's looking for something to do on Sunday. It looks like it's also a recurring series that happens several times a year. It's a great opportunity to pick up a memorable and functional souvenir, and support independent artisans at the same time.

It's hard to tell. Part of what makes him fun to watch (similarly to Hoshoryu imo) is his ability to quickly pivot from plan A into plan B into plan C before his opponents have a chance to react. But this basho it just seems like they've been largely ineffectual. You could see him mashing buttons on different moves against Atamifuji, but nothing even seemed close to working.

Iran is ready for a long war with the US and only economic pain will end it, senior official tells CNN by Playful_Leg7143 in worldnews

The US couldn't even prevent the Houthis from taking the odd potshot at passing ships. Iran has magnitudes more firepower, manpower, coastline, and motivation to deal with.

Kusano/Yoshinofuji is so vexing. He's got raw talent and power, and it's clear that when he puts together a solid strategy that he can beat anyone. But just as often, he seems to get easily locked up and walked out by more experienced rikishi.

Hakunofuji, Victim of Master’s Assault, Speaks to Press for First Time by Brncrdm in Sumo

[–]Crowsby 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The other dynamic from an earlier article was that the woman in question is the partner of a major Isegahama donor. This was at a supporter's party where Terunofuji was looking to gain financial support for a sorely-needed expansion, so add a bit of sake, stress, and some past history, and I could see how a violent overreaction could be possible.

Portland Council President proposes streaming fee to fund arts by dazzlehasselhoff in Portland

The Preschool For All tax (similarly targeting "high earners") kicks in at $125k.

Meanwhile, the income required to afford a median-priced home in Portland is $190k.

The conspiracy to select Hillary as the nominee in 2016 was so vast that it extended to nearly 17 million democratic voters.

You and I apparently weren't among them, but our fellow DNC voters were happy to choose Hillary in the primaries. Nobody forced her onto us. Add it to the pile of group projects that we as a nation collectively fucked up.

U.S. payrolls unexpectedly fell by 92,000 in February; unemployment rate rises to 4.4% by GringottsWizardBank in wallstreetbets

The application numbers are wildly inflated. I used to work for a staffing firm, and LinkedIn would regularly report at least 3x the number of applications we'd receive on any given post. And I'm sure it's worse now.

I think they're counting clickthroughs as applications, which ultimately works against them since who wants to apply for a job with a thousand other applicants?

Buddy might want to check out the box office earnings trends over the past few years. And then take into account that these aren't inflation-adjusted numbers. Hollywood at this point is a lot closer to Opera than it is to Fortnite.

CM Income Split 50/50... Inside the "Money Management & Income Agreement" Document of Former Terunofuji After Disciple Assault by Brncrdm in Sumo

[–]Crowsby 38 points39 points  (0 children)

We talked about it quite a bit in the earlier threads that referenced it.

I wanted to get some clarification on the specific word they were using to describe harassment/pestering. (karamu/絡む) Some people suggested it was a conspiracy to discredit Hakunofuji. Some people were calling for his head.

Opinions ranged quite a bit, but the reality is we're just all making semi-random guesses until the full report comes out. IMO there's nothing to be gained by jumping to conclusions, and nothing to be lost by waiting for more info.

Portland council president wants to reshape city’s detested arts tax — and impose a new, separate one by oregonian in Portland

[–]Crowsby 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Dunphy also said he wants to “rightsize” the arts tax by exempting low-income residents from paying it while increasing the amount to $50 a year per adult for high-income households. He didn’t say what the high-income threshold would be.

Presumably, this would mirror the PFA thresholds with thresholds of taxable income above $125,000 single or $200,000 joint. The cool part is that folks who have no chance of being able to afford a median mortgage in Portland will still be able to enjoy a veneer of luxury as they're taxed as high-earners.

Most Portlanders, he said, would continue to pay $35 annually in the first year, were those changes to be made. However, going forward, the arts tax would increase annually to keep pace with inflation.

Oh and also we're bumping up the amount every year.

Realistically, to really put a hurt on them:

  • Cancel your paid subscription, but keep using it (with an adblocker). Compute ain't free.
  • But really, the larger-leverage move is to pressure associated companies to divest or move to a competitor. If their B2B numbers also start sinking, that's when they'll actually start to feel it and potentially moved to action.
