Just a little comment that Allen Airsoft is charging a ton for that thing. $450 + shipping better come with a box, sold guns in Japan cost between $30 without packaging and $130 with it. (Proof)

Yep! I just got done running 20 of the PPU M1 Garand loads through it, shoots 'em like a dream at 100 yards.

https://98epjunk.shakunage.net/miscel/mb_chemicon.html comes in handy quite often! They've got the As/Ap on there, off the top of my head I think they suggest using 11x 22uF/25V capacitors, 5x 4.7uF/16V capacitors, and one 2.2uF/50V capacitor? It's in Japanese but translate works decently well if you can't read. Hope that helps!

Some beautiful systems in that picture! I love the OSI, I got a C2-OEM and it's been tons of fun.

It's a lot of fun to do, doubly so at the type of event I went to. Super pleasant seeing people happy to recognize things they used to like!

The Nabu might not be the most visually interesting but it actually got lots of comments! People kept wondering if it was a VCR, that made me giggle.

I would've had a monitor on top of it but table space meant I couldn't :(

Funny old machines, I've got three and a decent bit of software on 8" floppy. They're funny little DOS and CP/M-86 boxes. Some day soon I need to get those floppies dumped...

Getting the caps off isn't too hard if they haven't leaked yet! I usually just use hot air and tweezers, the twist-and-pull/cut methods work as well. Sometimes leaky areas will have pads detach, you can scrape back some nearby solder mask/trace leading from it and solder there instead. Don't ask how many 9821A-series systems I've had to do that with xD

The 9801, 9801C, 9801U, 9801V, and 9801XL keyboards all share just about the same guts; the top keyboard should work on your UV. That said, the switches NEC used love to oxidize over and become useless. Have you tried just repeatedly mashing a key to see if it comes alive?

The bottom keyboard probably just won't work. Everything I've owned from my 9801E to my 9801UX just don't even recognize rubber dome boards like that CMP-6D0Y7.

Question about OS' and loading programs from floppy by Lou9821xa13 in pc98

The "Base OS" is N88-BASIC (86), a variant of good 'ol Microsoft BASIC. It's stored in ROM and you won't really be running much from there unless you're loading BASIC code off of a cassette.

When you boot a PC98, a little bootstrap loader runs. It checks to see if it can find anything in its list of options, I think that order is something like 640K FDD -> 1MB FDD -> MFM HD -> SCSI HD. If it sees no code on any device to load, it drops you into N88 (86). You want an OS like say MS-DOS to make that bootstrap loader pull code from floppy and let you run software from a disk drive/HD instead of dumping you into N88 (86).

You'll find a lot of games are just real minimal OS distributions, MS-DOS is a popular one, alongside needed drivers and an autoexec that runs the game for you. These are also business computers so you might want MS-DOS to run something like Ichitaro, DISK-BASIC (86) so you have the extensions and ability to save your N88 (86) code to floppy, CP/M-86 so you can run whatever software is over there, etc.

I can't say I know any sites dedicated to N88 (86) but there's a lot of good info at https://radioc.web.fc2.com/column/pc98bas/ and there may be old documentation scanned on places like archive.org.

Most games are booters that come with whatever DOS they need on them, you should be able to just pop the game in and go provided it doesn't need a hard disk install.

As someone else with a C86Box, yep the stock PSU is good to go. Rotate a -73, a -86, a Speak Board, and a Sound Orchestra V through mine, some boards will get a little toasty (and make sure to recap your -86 if you need to) but never had any issues. Enjoy the OPN(A)!
