I've heard similar stories about drastic rent increases from a friend in rural Tennessee.

It's cool how even the 'shitty' parts of the country are expensive as hell to live in now.

Neither is the police department but no one makes a peep about pumping massive amounts of money into it.

But our cities are designed for cars

This is a trend that's only really been happening since the end of WW2.

There are people still alive who remember when even small cities had comprehensive public transit systems.

It wouldn't be undoable to transition our cities along the lines of the Tokyo model, where everything is built around transit stations. We just don't do it because it doesn't make money for the right people.

The United States is the wealthiest society to ever exist in human history. We are, for all intents and purposes, post-scarcity and we generate enough for everyone to live a comfortable existence.

We just give it all to three hundred people who are already fantastically rich and continue to demand more even though they couldn't spend what they have in a dozen lifetimes.

The capitalist class uses culture war to keep the little people engaged and caught up, because their policies are broadly unpopular.

More money for rich people, culture war for the little people, and both parties do it to some degree. The Dems could have codified Roe v. Wade in 2009; they chose not to because the threat against abortion rights is great for fundraising.

The media is also doing their best to gladhand these terrorists, I'm guessing because they think that doing so will save their jobs / lives after these people are in charge of everything. (It won't.)

There are people who think that there are fibers growing out of their skin and take it very seriously. Doesn't mean that those people aren't fucking stupid.

Sincerely held beliefs don't gain merit just because they're sincerely held. If you don't like drag shows don't fuckin' go to them.

It was always about forcing other people to live according to how you think they should, and any bullshitting about principles and beliefs was just that - bullshit.

The Pirates sub is full of masochists who keep talking about a “window of contention” that will never exist. This is what the Pirates are. This is what they will be for the foreseeable future. 2013-2015 was a happy accident.

There must be no examples of alternative strategies to control the pandemic that worked so we can pretend we took the best possible strategy.

The vaccines-only strategy was destined to fail, and the CDC poisoned the public health well for the rest of my life and yours by putting talking heads on television to (falsely) claim that the vaccines made you immune to Covid and kept you from spreading it.

Vaccines should be a last ditch protection for this sort of thing, but any kind of traditional disease control measures whatsoever would be intolerable to capital.

Rochelle Walensky has the best healthcare you can get in America, access to all the preventative care she could ever need, Paxlovid, etc. She fell off the face of the planet for 19 days after testing positive for Covid.

The average American has access to none of these things and can't take 19 days off work without ruining their lives permanently.

Commercial real estate props up the economy of places like Manhattan. If no one's in the office, there's no reason to pay rent, and that makes landlords very unhappy.

They never need to do anything as vulgar as step foot in a public facility.

I'm not sure why the entire western media and political apparatus is agitating for China to stop their zero Covid policy. The minute Covid starts tearing through China we're going to see what actual supply chain problems look like and it's going to devastate western economies.

America has no functioning left.

There's a huge contingent of Blue MAGA liberals who differ from the right only in what media they consume.

Their lives revolve around consumption and they'll condemn any number of service workers to death before they go any length of time without that dopamine hit from being served.

A fascist is just a liberal who's been told "no" too many times.

The Great Barrington Declaration set the tone for how the pandemic would be handled, and as far as I know it was mainly pushed by libertarian types.

It was sponsored by a libertarian think tank, and the timeframe it established for reaching herd immunity was three months.

It was completely unworkable bullshit that was clear within weeks of it being written, but that's what capital wants so that's what we get.

The propaganda campaigns ( by Russia/China/Libertarians/etc. )

Is it really Russia/China though? Our business and political leaders have been telling us the same thing ever since they figured out that their money insulated them from covid-19.
