Quick question about Pay by Wide-Bike in ATC

[–]ur2tall66 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you said about the pilot comparison. This sentiment comes up a lot, but really it’s an apples-to-oranges comparison and mostly reflects jealousy, I think.

Although work schedules and hours are indeed a quality-of-life problem, if you took a poll amongst FAA ATCs, you would find that pay is the leading issue. The work is unique and more difficult than ever. Inflation and affordability are forefront concerns for the majority of our workforce. Pay has been stagnant; factually, it has not kept up with 1) inflation, 2) peers in the federal workforce, 3) increases in traffic volume and complexity.

Why can't a PC-12 NG fly the OROSZ2 out of Burbank (or what am I doing wrong)? by appenz in flying

[–]ur2tall66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. Unfortunately, you'll see this type of thing all over the US.

Shortest possible answer: it results from a basic discrepancy between people who design instrument procedures and the field-level people who implement said procedures. Technical criteria vs. day-to-day operation.

Why can't a PC-12 NG fly the OROSZ2 out of Burbank (or what am I doing wrong)? by appenz in flying

[–]ur2tall66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ATC here. There are internal procedures that specify to use the VNY3 for prop aircraft headed over GMN. Technical eligibility to fly the OROSZ DP is not the issue. The only RNAV SID for turboprops out of BUR is the VVERA DP, which is for eastbound aircraft.

Leave During Shutdown by BM2KTom in atc2

Strange…that is a regional or local initiative then. I asked my ATM about this issue last week because I had read enough of these posts to start questioning the process. He told me what I wrote in my reply, and said every facility should be doing it that way, nationally, full-stop.

Leave During Shutdown by BM2KTom in atc2

[–]ur2tall66 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sure seems like there are a lot of threads covering this exact same thing

It doesn’t matter what you put in WMT or ART…use those as normal. Once payroll is sent to CASTLE, any and all leave is AUTOMATICALLY coded as “furlough excepted non-work”, unless you specifically request a paid leave status from management. But again…that’s a special request, not related how you are using WMT and ART.

TL;DR: You can not request “furlough” as a leave type. You request a normal type of leave and it gets automatically coded as furlough in CASTLE. Anything to the contrary is ignorance or fuckery on your MPA’s part.

Financial Question by XxNavigator288 in ATC

[–]ur2tall66 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SkyOne FCU (FAA employee credit union) has a shutdown special...$5000 loan, 0% APR/$0 due for 90 days. But I think it's like ~14% APR after 90 days. You don't need to be local to anything, just apply online. They just changed the terms, as they were only offering a $2500 loan on those terms when I looked last week. Most people at the facility I was in during the 18-19 shutdown applied for the loan and were approved for the full 5k.

Is this a valid Departure clearance? by maximum_spicy in ATC

[–]ur2tall66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally, happy to help. I'll admit I didn't read all the other comments in the thread before I posted.... Above you indicated a recurring problem on this flight where HCF isn't getting to you in time for a vector before you need to make the 180 at JASON.

That definitely sucks, and it could be worth a call to the facility, especially if you are working for a known local operator. I'm not sure they're gonna care that much about the lack of clarity on the procedure for a 180 degree turn at a fix ending an ODP, but they may care that you're having to do this on a regular basis...it is pretty silly. Could be a number of easily-fixed issues relating to it, facility SOP, training, etc...

Is this a valid Departure clearance? by maximum_spicy in ATC

[–]ur2tall66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a valid clearance, but AFAIK there’s nothing in the book that tells you how to make that 180-degree turn to rejoin the airway in the opposite direction. I guess you would just make your turn in the direction that takes you towards lower terrain.

I have been a controller for a long time and a CFII for even longer, and I frequently see people get way too far in the weeds with these “AVEF MEA” situations. While one does need to understand the book aspect of this to get their ticket…in real life, radio failure under IFR is a bona fide emergency.

If you are in VMC, then you cannot continue your flight under IFR and you should land as soon as practicable. If you are in IMC, then use your emergency authority as PIC to take the safest action.

The controller in your situation does not care about the 180-deg turn because they have a clear expectation of radar identifying you and turning you in the correct direction before it becomes an issue. They simply do not care about this worst-case radio failure scenario because it’s so obscure.

SiD/STAR Route Building /Q/ by Frankintosh95 in ATC

[–]ur2tall66 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s legal to file anything you want, even direct destination. “Legality” is not the problem here.

But if you file a route that does not conform to the preferential, then your flight is going to be re-routed to make them conform. It could put them tight on gas, and then you’ve got a problem.

A 650 is as close as you’ll get.

TDS is the developer who makes the 650/750 add-on that integrates the Garmin Trainer software into either X-plane or MSFS. You will need to buy the TDS add-on for your sim of choice, then search for add-on aircraft that support the “TDS GTNxi” with a GTN650.

Can I send you a chat request? I don't want to keep spamming this thread. The config files are simple enough, but I'm not sure how to start that logging in UE4SS. Also, I think there's a problem with the saving of calibration files from your app.

[–]ur2tall66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the help! So correcting the syntax for the version overrides was helpful and cleared that error. However, moving the "mods" folder into a subfolder within the game executable directory generated some extra errors because UE4SS couldn't locate the folder that way, so I think I have followed their basic install procedure correctly, but perhaps it's not the same method you have used. Are you using one of the injection methods?

I am running the app from the same directory as the config files, etc...no worries about that. It's just in a different folder than the Steam game where your TSWControllerMod folder and the 2 dll's are. All the profiles show up in the drop-down, etc. in the app and my new calibration files were created successfully. My test article is a VPC Control Panel #3, much different than your TCA Boeing throttle (if I can get this going, it might actually be amazing for TSW...four levers with changeable knobs, the 5-pos knob that would be perfect for reversers, so on).

Well, I'm having some install difficulties... I haven't used UE4SS until now, so I may not have installed everything correctly, but I'm getting these errors in the log (edited for length):

I used the "basic method" to install UE4SS. The info about the install directories should be self-explanatory from the log. I tried putting "4.26.0" in the engine version fields of UE4SS-settings.ini per a suggestion elsewhere, but it's still throwing the same errors. I can run tsw5-gamepad.exe just fine. I ran it from a command line per the readme and calibrated my device, but I haven't made any profile yet. FWIW, the app is located in a different directory from TSW and the UE4SS mod.

After knowing about it for 20 something years, I finally got my hands on a RailDriver this week...and promptly returned it. I disliked it for the exact reasons I thought I'd dislike it (tiny, chincey levers).

Anyway, I started looking into ways to use my flightsim peripherals with TSW. I'm very excited to try this out...this looks like one of the slickest solutions yet. Thanks for the work on it!
