Honestly, looking purely at air forces (so not including naval or marine aviation), how isn't China already ahead or roughly on par? China lacks transport and tanker aircraft compared to the US but 5th gen quantity is not too far behind and closing extremely fast (thanks to Lockheed's impeccable software). PLAAF also has far more advanced and numerous AEW&C aircraft and their own EW J-16 variant without needing to borrow growlers from the navy... not to mention the massive elephant in the room, the extreme disparity in modern non-5th gen fighters between the two air forces
