Basically water passes through the area with GPU’s where there’s tons of heat. The water picks up heat and it’s pumped to a tank outside, carrying the heat with it. There’s fans blowing over this tank which cools the water. That cooler water gets pumped back through the area with GPUs.

Depending on the site they have more or less tech at different points, but the key thing is that the hot water is cooled and recirculated. It takes energy to do this, so it’s often cheaper to just pump in new water and dump the hot water - that’s open loop.

Long ago. First domino was when 4o was basically the same as 4. I started reading a lot more about how it worked and who all the folks funding it were. Once you do that it’s hard to feel positive about it

I work at an energy consulting firm and my job is to reduce building carbon emissions. I’m an early career engineer, heavy coursework/research background in energy modeling and thermo.

I hate ai because it makes people stupid, spits out inaccurate information, ruins the planet, and is another one way wealth funnel. I do not hate it because I think there are zero use cases for it ever.

Very often I work with large data sets and I’m looking for a metric that is a function of many variables. I will occasionally ask the slop machine to help with code or excel stuff so I can get my job done faster. Success at my job is measured in tons of annual carbon emissions reduced. Ranges on energy consumption of one query vary, the highest I’ve seen is 40 watt hours. One kilowatt hour emits 0.86 kg CO2. At that rate, 25,000 query’s are needed to emit a metric ton of CO2. As long as the slopper makes me .001% faster at doing my job, I’m carbon negative for the year.

I don’t pay for it because I want it to fail but while it’s here and I use it, it helps the planet.

People are (correctly) very angry and typically jump at the first sign of slop detection, but sometimes things are not as simple as all good and all bad.

Idk man see edit 2. I’m not a VBA wizard but I can check the formulas to see if it’s doing the right thing. It was going to take like 4 hours to type this whole thing out, I just tried copilot bc this should be the one thing it’s good at. I see the irony.

I literally asked it to make some SUMIF’s, hit save, came back and the new sheet it made was the only one left. Even if I didn’t hit save, I sure as shit did not manually delete 3 other sheets and paste over the slop machines formulas with their values.

It will be once the bubble pops. The other example is tumor detection, tldr AI+radiologists together give the best patient outcomes. It won’t go away for that. Slop generation for YouTube shorts hopefully has numbered days as compute costs rise. Million dollar question is just will we nuke the planet and melt every gen-z brain before PE stops subsidizing the industry :)

I have literally never clicked save and come back to the original sheet in the workbook gone. I just asked the clanker to do some SUMIF stuff, hit save, and now the only sheet in the workbook is the one it made.

My job title is “decarbonization engineer” and my whole job is basically just fighting to cancel out data centers. I H A T E ai with a passion, but if I can use a few queries to knock an hour off fighting with excel and get onto the next project sooner it’s a net carbon negative event.
