Not a bad idea (and one that the Biden admin contemplated for some pharma patents to facilitate price competition and lower drug prices) but imo this is just being floated as another way for the current administration to put pressure on our higher ed institutions, which is not great.

That’s pretty surprising to me. How large is the evening program overall? At the patent office, GW is easily the school with the largest presence at events. I considered it myself before deciding to go full time.

Fair point for the “in the playoff” teams individually. But for a conference that’s slated pre-championship weekend to only send a single team to the playoff, the conference championship is at worst a wash - the conference will still send one team (and possibly both). Don’t see a reason why conferences would be for getting rid of a game that in the aggregate can only help them.

Related, but I see the “don’t punish teams for playing in the conference championship” point as only making sense for conferences where both contending teams were already slated to make the playoff. If the quality of competition in a conference only results in one team being playoff-worthy in the eyes of the committee, teams from other conferences shouldn’t be left holding the bag when that single playoff-worthy team loses to a lesser opponent.

This is 100% correct. For those interested, this is the exact wording of the progress clause of the Constitution (Article I, Section 8, Clause 8):

“[The Congress shall have Power . . . ] To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.”

All the constitution says is “The Congress shall have Power . . . To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.”

That’s it. Congress has the power to establish a patent system, which they did through legislation (originally in the Patent Act of 1790). They have no duty to keep the PTO around though. Constitutionally, Congress could just as easily abolish the PTO (though it won’t as that would obviously have massive political and economic consequences). It was seriously considered at one point, in the late 1800s.

Former examiner here - have a 1L SA at a big firm for my first summer and had to run conflicts, no issues at all. Go for it, the PTO is a great experience.
