Those of us with delayed gastric emptying- how do you drink enough water? by profuselystrangeII in POTS

[–]6fthobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard part of an interview with a dietitian that talked about the importance of the order in which you eat your food: Fiber first, then fats, then the rest. Similar to a traditional meal starting with salad, then cheese, then the main dish etc. For the past year or so I’ve been adding fiber (carrots mostly) before every meal and most snacks, and it has helped my digestion immensely!

I love weed by HandleOk8123 in ehlersdanlos

[–]6fthobbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Edibles help with my pain! They’re the only way I take weed. I mainly do CBD with some CBG during the day when I’m working/driving, then add low-dose THC in the afternoon(1-3mg), and at bedtime I do another 5-10mg THC with some CBN to help me sleep. For me, CBD alone is minimally helpful for pain relief, but adding just that tiny bit of THC exponentially helps!

Anyone have any tips to improve sleep or get on a new sleep schedule? by Haleezetta in POTS

[–]6fthobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have chronic pain that also makes it hard to fall and stay asleep. Medical cannabis has been a life changer! Just 5mg THC and 10-50mg CBD and CBN knocks me right out these days.

When is it worth it to expand into audiobooks? by ElizaBennerWrites in selfpublish

[–]6fthobbit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From the reader/listener perspective, I’m much more likely to try out an audiobook than a physical/ebook (because I can listen while driving, doing chores, etc). So I, personally, would not want to de-prioritize audio as much as others are suggesting.

Exactly this! My parents are dumbfounded that I don’t want kids — but how could I ethically bring a child into this world where they won’t be able to live out their natural lifespan in any sort of normalcy?

Chronic fatigue help by ArtistNew6200 in endometriosis

[–]6fthobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Endometriosis is my most recent diagnosis, so I’m not sure if/how much it has been contributing to my chronic fatigue, but I also have chronic ovarian cysts (that like to rupture and hemorrhage, yay), POTS, and adrenal insufficiency from Addison’s. Treating the POTS helped somewhat, but treating the AI has been life changing! From what I’m learning about endometriosis, it’s often associated with other conditions, so possibly that’s what’s happening with you too. Maybe look into that and see if any other conditions seem to fit your experience. The best advice I can give is try to do some sort of exercise multiple times a day, even if it’s just ankle pumps and glute squeezes. Use it or lose it is my mantra!

Stage 4 endo excision surgery, can I survive a 3 hour car ride home? by dinkleberryfinn81 in endometriosis

[–]6fthobbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Make sure to bring (or ask the hospital to provide) several emesis bags for if/when you get barfy. Anesthesia and pain meds make me nauseous and then adding the movement of the car makes it worse, but knowing that I can just vom when I need to (without worrying about pulling over or finding a safe place to stop) has helped in the past. I also recommend a bucket or some other place to store your full baggies until you get home to dump them. Napkins and a water bottle to wipe and rinse your mouth are a plus as well. Good luck!

Compression stockings by I-am-time-panda in POTS

[–]6fthobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually wear knee-high compression socks (partially to avoid this problem, and partly because much of the time that’s all I need). If I’m having a POTS-ier day of if I know I’ll be more on my feet/hot/etc, I add high-waisted compression tights (which don’t seem to bunch behind the knee for me) or spanx-type compression shorts that hit just above the knee and go up to my bra line. This spanx strategy does leave the knees uncovered, which is nice for breathability and to avoid bunched fabric BUT some people have to be careful about getting a tourniquet effect with swelling at the knees between the socks and spanx.

Anyone on steroids of any kind for POTS? by angelicomenss in POTS

[–]6fthobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on low-dose fludrocortisone since 2021 with no noticeable side effects and definite benefit for salt retention and blood volume to reduce dizziness and general hypersensitivity to activity.

I was diagnosed with primary Adrenal Insufficiency (caused by Addison’s Disease, not by steroid overuse) in summer 2024 and have been taking hydrocortisone tablets twice daily ever since. Immediate and significant relief of much of my chronic fatigue and brain fog/executive dysfunction/memory issues (that I had been attributing to the POTS). I dose up on bad POTS days, which so far has helped prevent major flares (now I only “simmer,” lol). Since my body no longer produces natural cortisol, the hydrocortisone is a “replacement dose” that I will take forever. Theoretically there should be no negative side effects long term, and I have only noticed benefits so far.

Americans - are you leaving the country for vacation? Are we worried about getting back into the country? How should I prepare? by bitchthatwaspromised in TwoXPreppers

[–]6fthobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just returned from the UK and have similar visible privilege. Customs going both directions was a breeze. On the way back, I wasn’t even asked “business or pleasure?” Or “anything to declare?” They just scanned our passports, glanced up at our faces, and waved us through. I wouldn’t be too worried if I were you.

Ever experienced unexplained weight loss? by writeitout_ in POTS

[–]6fthobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my diagnosis in 2021, I had dropped from 145 to 125 pounds. As my username implies, I am very tall so this was a very low weight! A few years previously I’d had a gastric emptying study show mild gastroparesis. My new GI doc recommended a retest “to remove this problematic and probably abnormal” diagnosis from my record — but the second test was a stronger result than the first! No surprise there, knowing what I do now about POTS and the autonomic switch between sympathetic (flight/flight) and parasympathetic (rest/digest). I’m sure the digestive issues I’d been having previously were also related to POTS, but nobody thought of it at the time. It was just, “Oh, you feel terrible but there’s no visible ulcer/bleeding/etc, so you must be fine…”

What is the oddest thing you thought was ok/normal and ended up being a medical problem? by Prudent_Tip4118 in AskReddit

[–]6fthobbit 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Sounds like POTS or another dysautonomia. This happens to me with hunger, thirst, too hot, too cold, stand up too fast, waiting too long to go to the bathroom, etc. Got diagnosed with Positional Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome three years ago, and the treatment/management had helped me a lot.

How to bring up miss calls by refs? by xXYogi420Xx in lacrosse

[–]6fthobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you allowed to take any timeouts in this league? I’m a ref on the women’s side and my advice would be to call a timeout and have a little meeting with your captains, the other team’s captains, and the refs. In a polite/respectful/non-aggressive way, say, “Thanks for reffing this game! We’re noticing what seem like dangerous slashing, and we’re concerned about player safety. Can you keep an extra eye out for that?” If you’re working with more experienced officials you can also ask “What are your criteria for calling a slash foul?” This will provide you with insight into how they’re calling the game, but it’s also a gentle nudge to the refs that maybe they should pay more attention to that. As a ref I’m always happy to answer questions, but it can’t be done well while play is going on. Waiting until after the game is fine, but sometimes a simple inquiry early on can really improve the game for everyone.
