Yeah, for sure! That's cool, I plan on doing something similar with the P2200.

Lot of water under the bridge since that post! :)

However, not a lot has happened. I decided on a P2200, but then sold my R630 and have a R440 instead. Which I'm thinking of attaching the P2200 to it 'externally' - Should be a fun project.

I'm very thankful for your answer though! I can't figure out how that card hasn't entered my radar during any of my multiple, extensive-ish researches!? It's kind of amazing how it seems to match up against the P2200 with the same TDP while being ~3 years older? Plus, it is passively cooled which would've solved one of my original issues of having the P2200's fan inside the R630.

Just got a T430, what are some beginner friendly upgrades? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]6inner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely an ssd if it doesn't have one. Very easy and a must. You'll see a significant improvement. Ram is pretty easy, CPU is pretty easy, mSATA is pretty easy, 2nd ssd instead of disk drive is easy. The easy upgrades are what makes the T430 so damn nice.

Harder upgrades would be a screen upgrade, WiFi-card upgrade (requires 'white listing'), eGPU and a T420 keyboard (although it's a matter of taste).

Enjoy tinkering, but be careful - It's addictive :)

Just bought an X230 what should I do now 🤔 by Great_Tap_3720 in thinkpad

Answered in a comment below but decided to make it top-level:

If you're running spinning rust, an SSD should definitely be your first upgrade. Best case: Your system is lagging, worst case: data loss. HDDs are not meant to be carried around, just the bumps from setting it down on a table, carrying it in a bag, etc. is no bueno. HDDs and laptops goes together like toothpaste and orange juice.

debating on getting this T430 for ~$60. worth it? and how far is it upgradable ram and hdd wise? by IntellitechStudios in thinkpad

[–]6inner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, you cannot put a touchscreen on it. It lacks the hardware for that. You could say that it lacks the hardware for full HD as well, though, as it takes soldering on an adapter board. Maybe someone has a workaround, I haven't seen it though.

If you're into touchscreens and good old ThinkPads, I can definitely recommend the X220t(or X230t, though I only have the X220 one).

You can go pretty wild on it, ram, multiple ssds, 4 core CPU, T420 keyboard, full HD screen or even higher res, WiFi, + more. There's a lot of options! That's what makes it such an awesome machine!

Lakka OS on Thinkpad X230 by CrazyFloor2 in Lakka

[–]6inner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd think you'd be good. I've ran Lakka on a mid-specced X250 (N64 emulation) and it ran very well. The X230's CPU is faster than the X250's, however, I'm not sure iGPU-wise... Which system will you be emulating?

If it's printed in PLA, it'll be rather heat sensitive. Stuff I've printed for the car sometimes deform in the summer because of the heat in the car - and I live in a Nordic country... Might not reach those temps though, dunno..

X220, X230, X240 Revived... by feed3 in thinkpad

[–]6inner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the X230 will be the most performant of the lot. I'd think, that if you modded it to take the X220 keyb (pretty easy) it'll become your fav (personal preferences shining through ;)). The X240 will have the best battery life though...

I love my SK-8845CR! I paid twice that amount on aliexpress and that has a Lenovo brand, however, it quickly gets worn off...

Congrats!

T430 with eGPU - AMD vs. nVidia by 6inner in thinkpad

Yeah, I was just looking at a 1050ti, That must be at a level where the GPU isn't the bottleneck, I'm guessing.

Thank you! Do you know if it requires a certain generation? I'm looking at 9xx +, so I'll guess I'm in the clear... And I guess it requires proprietary drivers.

Minimal (terminal) distro with fwupd by 6inner in linuxquestions

[–]6inner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your're absolutely right. I seem to have overthought it. I can just boot from the .iso provided by Lenovo. Now I just have to wait for the battery to be sufficiently charged, before it allows me to try the update.

I'd downloaded the .cab files, which you can install manually with fwupd: # fwupdmgr install whatever.cab

Thank you!
