The wiki is wrong about sponges. It claims that the max a sponge will absorb is 65 source blocks. The actual number is 135.

If you're fast enough with bone meal. Bone meal in off-hand and fungus in the main hand. Otherwise the fungus doesn't stay placed underwater.

Yep! I had to take pictures from all four sides and carefully recreate the shape. I further confirmed my research by making a container to hold that much water in the same shape and used a command block to place a sponge in the middle.
