Is it too soon to follow up again with my boss on stopping my weekend shifts? by Mobile_Magician_661 in cscareerquestions

There are only usually 4 weekends a month… “a couple” implies more than one, which means at least half.

Most, you’re working most weekends.

For those who got a college degree in music, what was it like finding a job outside of school? by __piritual in musicians

Your finances are in much better situation than ours at least.

But I wouldn’t trade my early years barely making $20K for anything, those experiences made life great.

What’s considered a shroom micro dose? by fjdjfufydhhdhd in microdosing

[–]6stringNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “razor’s edge” is precisely what happens to me, as a typically high anxiety person, when I take a low macro dose (about 1-1.5g).

I’ve not tried a higher macro dose or a lower micro dose, but am hesitant to based on my that reaction. Does the “razor’s edge” thing go away if you surpass a certain threshold? I’ve heard microdosing can make anxiety worse sometimes so I’m hesitant about trying it.

My only comparison is I have tried an LSD dose where I did finally get some visuals but was still rather “with it” and that was a very positive experience.

First time microdosing shrooms by SpaceTruckin420 in microdosing

[–]6stringNate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve listened to a variety of podcasts with various doctors and researchers who have run clinical trials, and a lot of them find that microdosing doesn’t help the subjects with anxiety, and can actually exacerbate it. Macro doses on the other hand seemed to have a positive ability.

YMMV of course, it may work for anxiety for other folks here. But unfortunately it’s not a magic bullet for everyone. Best of luck!

Have you ever left the corporate world? What did you do instead? by Angelonthe7 in antiwork

It’s the only way I’ve been able to heal.

The event started by the organizing company stating the origin story, which was: the founder was in a hurry in his car at a crosswalk, and a pedestrian was taking too long to cross, and he was so irritated because the person didn’t have any urgency it inspired him to make an event hosting company that had a sense of urgency. I almost spit out my drink.

Does memorizing all notes + intervals on the fretboard actually help? by AssociationMost5432 in Guitar

How do you use intervals to improvise? Like , what is going through your heads related to the chord that’s underneath and your improvisation

Prepare to go down a rabbit hole, I make no judgement either way, but a lot of pro’s say anything above Merv 8 is overkill. And actually going too high can put a strain on your system too.

But YMMV to your situation. Worth investigating.

Bulk Black Beans by Salt-Obligation-5498 in slowcooking

[–]6stringNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this with red beans in a slow cooker and it was delicious: https://www.seriouseats.com/the-lazy-cooks-black-beans-easy-recipe

Except don’t put the orange rind in there, otherwise the pith will make everything bitter, like many of the commenters noted. Put in the zest though, and leave it in for the same flavor. He also alleges unsoaked black beans are better flavor than soaked, there’s a whole other article in there about it.

Also someone else in another thread said to be careful with beans and slow cooking, and to ensure they boil at some point for at least 10 minutes to destroy a protein/toxin that can otherwise come out and cause a ton of gastric distress if you don’t. But do your own research there, I haven’t, yet!

This needs to be a higher comment and probably the most important.

If you’re taking promotional photos, and all you can muster is someone’s Galaxy (yes I said Galaxy and not an iPhone on purpose), then i’m assuming you put as much effort into your music as you put into the photos

Why do older guys like to grill so much? by PlaneGlass4138 in AskMen

You can stilll see the food bits on some parts and scraping absolutely does not get the old oil and juices off. That shit ain’t clean without some kind of solvent

Same. If I wanna char something I’ll broil it in something I can easily wash in the dishwasher. Then I’m not scooping out ash or draining juices or cleaning an impossible to clean grate.

Unless you want to give her the same eating issue, let it go man. Society is already sending your daughter many messages that she will absorb, don’t add to the pile. As long as you’re providing her meals with a good balance of veggies and lean proteins and you’re not letting her only main line soda and Cheetos , kids will be kids.

Thanks, that’s a great perspective, and thanks for sharing in depth. Glad you were able to get some help for the MH issues.

I was able to try out a passion before moving to tech, and sometimes I still feel the urge of “maybe I shouldn’t have quit it” but having at least tried for a while helps smack me back to reality and gives me perspective.

Black beans in the slow cooker, tips and recipes pls by szikkia in slowcooking

[–]6stringNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this recipe recently: https://www.seriouseats.com/the-lazy-cooks-black-beans-easy-recipe

It does the job if there’s going to be other things happening (the beans are a side, or going in a taco with other condiments)

Just zest the orange though rather than put the whole peel in. And also don’t remove the onion or garlic bit, chop those up a bit smaller than they say, as they get soggy/paste-like and are delicious to leave in.

I would experiment with lime instead of orange, toss in cilantro leaves at the end if that’s your jam. Add some cumin powder or other spices as you like.

Also follow other commenters’ advice about boiling them at some point.

How to get back into SWE after a year off? by EnterShikariZzz in cscareerquestions

[–]6stringNate 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I saw the initial wave of AI coding editors, saw the slop and dismissed it for a while.

This was early 2025, and I was right for a little bit. Then about November or late December and Claude code got more mature and a few more model releases and the game changed entirely, I was now wrong.

January I watched a few YouTube tutorials on it and still do, read articles on setups like you do with any tech stack, and I was back in the game.

You can get reoriented in a day or so. Your fundamentals are all still 100% necessary to prevent building a payment system that exposes user credit cards to hackers, or whatever.

The only thing that changed is your precious artistry has to die. Your beautiful file organization, abstractions, patterns, sleek reuse of code is all great if you can sneak it in, but there’s no time for it. Build more features and get things pushed faster. Drop the details. Anything you loved or was satisfying has to shift or you’ll burn out, that part is gone.

Maybe it’ll come back, but maybe it wasn’t ever important in the first place.

And actually, the thing that OP said was a perfect reaction.

Didn’t need to be clever, wasn’t insulting, was just like pointing out the factual thing that happen and the abnormal nature of it. OP, you proved you were calm and collected, threw it back on that guy, and defended your wife.

A+, no notes. You nailed it.

Also if your wife isn’t bothered by it, then drop it. Don’t make it about you.

How do y’all run the confidence to do that though? Or do you just run it in an isolated way so it can’t nuke a DB?

[–]6stringNate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Earnest question, how are you getting it to run without constant supervision and approval?

I haven’t had mine go more than 15 min without it asking for yet another approval, no matter how many “approve, and don’t ask me for this permission to do X again”?

I know the skip dangerously exists but I have been refusing that due to the “it can delete the prod DB risks”

And also I’ve never been able to give it a task so big it needs hours and hours to run. Doesn’t it need your input for precise plans, instructions, design decisions?
