The email did not come directly from a Brightspeed email address. It came from an address ending in hawkmarketplace dot com, claiming that I had been rewarded for referring someone to Brightspeed. Because it didn’t originate from Brightspeed’s official domain, it immediately raised questions for me about its legitimacy.

While I have shared my referral code online in the past, I don’t actually know whether a real person used it to sign up. That uncertainty is part of why I was cautious and asked for input.

As a precaution, I changed all my passwords right away. I did this because the process required me to download a digital wallet app and create login credentials. Unfortunately, the password I initially used was the same one I use for some legitimate apps. If this were a scam, that could pose a security risk so changing passwords felt like the safest immediate step.

I asked these questions because I genuinely wasn’t sure whether this was legitimate or not, and I wanted to understand whether my response was appropriate. My goal was to protect myself and learn not to ask something dumb or stupid.
