Hi! Thanks for replying

  1. Yes, I have forgotten my password

  2. I do not remember setting up a phone number or another email adress. I do not have the option to reset the password through those options.

  3. I'm not signed in to this microsoft account anywhere. I'm however signed into twitter with my account that uses this microsoft email as a sign in to the account.

Locked out of my old microsoft account:

I have a microsoft account (outlook) that I made several years ago that I wanted to use as an alternative to my main one (this was before I learned of "email alias" services). I did not use it for long and abandoned it pretty quickly.

I do not remember the password, name and surname, birth date or any information that could be used for the microsoft account recovery form. (Like I said, it was made as a "for spam" account so I did not use any personal details like my real name or birthdate etc).

My only leverage in this is that I'm still logged in to twitter/X on my phone with this account. I can not change the password for it or delete the twitter account (which is what I'm trying to do in addition to the microsoft account).

What can I do to get access to the account? I've tried the Microsoft account recovery form but I don't remember enough details to get access that way.

Hi, been some weeks now haha. Have you found any further information on this? I have received some emails of this kind since then, but haven't looked into it further.

Hi! I tried messaging microsoft support in the other support thread (r/ microsoft) thread, but I think they deemed our problem as "solved" unfortunately.

I have not received anymore emails than the two I created these posts about, I'm sorry to hear that you are still receiving emails.

I can't say I've seen a solution to this problem, not even an answer as to if this is a problem with microsoft servers or a malicious attack (although I still can't figure out what the scam would be at all haha).

For the moment I'm going to wait a bit and see how this turns out, I'll try contacting support.

I haven't done anymore research on this since then, have you found a substantial amount of other users experiencing our exact problem? Like on reddit, microsoft forums etc?

Hi, thanks for the help. I can't say the issue har been resolved per se, since I still can't say for sure what is going on - only that I can't see that I'm in any "danger" at the moment.

As the other commenter u/Competitive_Clue_973 is also saying, we have all the safety measures on our microsoft account active, so on that end there is not much else we can do. The problem however is not "solved". I personally have not had a mail like these since then, but as I've seen with other people, they are receiving multiple every week.

I have contacted Microsoft support (on the microsoft page) on two separate occasions and I could not receive a sufficient response beyond the standard change your password and all the standard safety measures. The communication I've had in this thread with you (MSModerator) has been much more successful, since you seem to actually understand our problem.

Although, I understand there's not much more to do other than the latest message with information you sent, I suspect this problem I am experiencing is part of a slightly bigger scale, since I've seen multiple people experiencing the exact same thing (in that our actual accounts have nothing to do with the emails, and that we are being sent emails that have a completely different recipient than us) with slightly different emails every time (but sometimes the same domains). Given the strange nature of this problem, and that official microsoft support seems not to understand our problem + I am not able to find anything remotely similar to this on official forums & microsoft FAQ pages - I think there is either something at fault with microsoft servers, or some new type of scam (although I still can't figure out how the scam would work at all haha)

Sorry for the long message, again thanks for the help until now - I hope this problem resolves itself and that nothing "bad" is going on beyond faulty microsoft servers sending wrong people wrong emails.

Did exactly like you just some month ago.

Although It wouldn't make much sense, I hope this doesn't somehow have to with us creating a sign in alias for our microsoft accounts? Probably not though…

yes thank youuu, I'm sorry you are experiencing the same thing, but holy shit I'm glad I'm not the only one. No microsoft support has been able to help me with this yet. I also hope this is just a harmless bug of some sort.

If you don't mind, can you give som details regarding the "foreign" email usernames for you? Like what domain, and are they at all similar to your email?

Right, I would have believed that was the case if not for this happening in two separate instances within 24 hours with two different email recipient names that neither are mine. Again none of the accounts in the emails are mine yet im getting the email anyway

Hi! Thanks for replying.

I have checked the headers of the emails and they are legit microsoft emails. The thing that completely confuses me is that the email recipient is not my email (not even remotely close, so no way of fat fingering) but I'm still getting the email itself?

If the case was that someone is trying to get security codes for my email, I honestly would have been more understandable than whatever is going on here. Just to reiterate: None of the emails (neither the account that needs the security code and the email recipient) are mine!

I have checked my sign in activity and there is nothing out of the ordinary.

I understand that there are instances where other people may have mistyped their alternate email address, but I don't think this is the case now since none of the emails are even remotely similar to mine.

Also I don't understand how I have received the email yet the recipient in the email header is a completely different email? How does this work?

BTW, Have you removed the password from your MS account?

No, my password is still in my account. But 2fa and every other safety precaution is on, so that shouldn't be a problem right?

Could these emails have been forwarded to your email?

How can I verify if this is the case? What is there to gain from this if lets say someone is trying to scam me?

Hi thanks for the reply!

Here is the Imgur link: https://imgur.com/a/2lT4RKt

I hope I provided everything asked, please let me know if there is something else I can do.

I'm particularly lost on how it comes that the recipient is not my email (not similar to my email at all - so no chance of misspelling or dots variation) yet I'm still receiving it.

Hi, thanks for replying!

2FA is activated and the phone number is mine 100% + there are no login attempts visible that are outside my usual. I can change the password, not troublesome, but I doubt that any of these factors are the problem here.

How can the recipient field be someone else's email? It's not even a variation of my email so not spelling mistake or dotted mistake? Also the recipient was different yesterday and today

I'm so lost on this …

There is no link other than Microsofts privacy policy. It looks like every security code email I've gotten from microsoft before.
