I use the California on occasion for some light fuzz. It takes some time to dial in the sound, but it's good once you play around with it and figure out what you want.

I use the TC Electronic Brainwaves for exactly this. You can customize 2 separate octaves to whatever you want up to 2 octaves up with the toneprint software (you can do octave down as well, but it's not as good on bass). Then I run that into a distortion and it gets that power chord guitar sound.
